so wait... you want to somehow mod the current shift **** with a light... instead of just buying for for 20 bucks at autozone?

well I know you can take the **** off with a twist.. but taking it apart probably isn't fun.. and getting a light in it that works is probably a lot less fun.

Good luck and don't forget to take pics and make a DIY so others can accomplish this daring feat.

yeah i want to mod the stock gear shift ****? I didn't know they sold those at autozone for twenty bucks... I guess I will go there and buy one.. I am an electronics tech and I am going to use led.. i am not sure if i want the 1-6 and r gears or a rotary symbol or rx-8 to show through in red or yellow, my dash instruments will be yellow soon also that is why i said that... but yeah autozone doesn't carry stock rx8 gear shift *****.. lol

i think I am going to have to cut the threads so I am going to wait on this for a little bit but I will continue to do this, I just need to find some nice thick yellow thread... I don't know what yours looks like but my thread looks dark brown.. also my center of my gear shift is white with black letters is this like yours?

If I remember correctly, the shift diagram is adhesive backed so you need to pry that off. Then under that is a screw that will allow you to remove the plastic parts.

Your best bet may be getting a cheep used one from another forum member who has replaced theirs or e-bay. That way you can tear one apart and still use your car.

Anything is possible.... but at some point you have to draw the line. I don't care how much free time you have on your hands.... not worth the hours of labor and hassle. Buy a quality (ha) illuminated **** and move on to bigger and better things.

Please do.
I didn't dare to mess up my still perfectly good shift **** to try this, nor the one that I have as a spare.

Got it apart and just waiting on parts. It was a breeze with the right tools. A jewelers screwdriver. Took parts but I post from my phone and can't add photos. Will post pics soon.
