taking apart you gear shift know
does anyone know how to take aprt the gear shift knob I am wanting to mod the knob with a light inside it.. I don't want to buy one and I want to be able to brag about it..
|
just turn it anti-clockwise
|
so wait... you want to somehow mod the current shift knob with a light... instead of just buying for for 20 bucks at autozone?
well I know you can take the knob off with a twist.. but taking it apart probably isn't fun.. and getting a light in it that works is probably a lot less fun. |
Good luck and don't forget to take pics and make a DIY so others can accomplish this daring feat.

i think I am going to have to cut the threads so I am going to wait on this for a little bit but I will continue to do this, I just need to find some nice thick yellow thread... I don't know what yours looks like but my thread looks dark brown.. also my center of my gear shift is white with black letters is this like yours?

If I remember correctly, the shift diagram is adhesive backed so you need to pry that off. Then under that is a screw that will allow you to remove the plastic parts.
Your best bet may be getting a cheep used one from another forum member who has replaced theirs or e-bay. That way you can tear one apart and still use your car. |
Anything is possible.... but at some point you have to draw the line. I don't care how much free time you have on your hands.... not worth the hours of labor and hassle. Buy a quality (ha) illuminated knob and move on to bigger and better things.

why dont you just buy one?
http://www.rhdjapan.com/jdm-low/Mazd...E3P-RX-8-22379 im sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere. first link that popped up, cause im not spending more time. |

a it was a silly wiring problem that was an easy fix. i think you just had to lengthen one wire.. if i recall correct. beers  |
I know its been awhile, but my leather is worn down to the knob, so I am going to attempt this now. I will create a DIY if i can get it apart and done.
|
Please do.
I didn't dare to mess up my still perfectly good shift knob to try this, nor the one that I have as a spare. |
Got it apart and just waiting on parts. It was a breeze with the right tools. A jewelers screwdriver. Took parts but I post from my phone and can't add photos. Will post pics soon.
