I heard that the DAC inside the Nexus 7 is kind of shitty (so sending audio out of the headphone jack won't be as amazing). People solve this by sending it via USB to an external DAC and using that to convert the Digital sound to Analog.

The only problem with this, is you cannot control the volume via USB (or to my knowledge). This is something I am looking for a proper solution for.

I am going to use the Bluetooth for audio via my existing Grom setup. I will only use the Grom connection when using my tablet for navigation otherwise I will have nexus synced to my PLX Bluetooth OBDII connection to use with the Torque app.

Hey guys, kinda new around here. I'll be picking up an 05 with nav this coming week and this is probably one of the first things I plan on doing. I've had galaxy nexus sitting in my room collecting dust so perfect use for it.

I'd like to point out that I believe (provided you root your device) that cyanogenmod 10+ has volume adjustable DAC. again, you'd need to root the tablet to switch to the custom rom. but it's nifty.

I'm curious. How are you guys maintaining your GPS functionality? Sim Data? Tethering? I think there are some GPS apps that function offline but haven't had the opportunity to try any. Any recommendations? was gonna check out Navfree which has Turn by turn. Also, just to confirm, will usb audio playback the GPS voices as well?

just an idea ehjhey:
root phone
ROM it (CM, aokp, etc)
nfc tag programmed to turn on Wi-Fi Tether when you get into the car

your tablet now has data whenever you're in the car.

I think that would be the easiest thing to do as opposed to doing offline navigation. Not that I would EVER tether my LTE data off my phone....

You can do what was mentioned above, with rooting your phone and getting wifi hotspot from there. In order to use Navigation like Google, you need internet access to pull the route, at which if your Nexus 7 has GPS (the newest ones do) you can then disconnect it from the internet and then you have an "offline" GPS. I have been trying co-pilot which isn't too bad for offline GPS.

I was speaking with a GROM rep online and they have a Android interfacing USB Module that has Bluetooth add-on capabilities. The rep stated that there was no need for a DAC with this module and that steering wheel controls are still useable. Heres' a link:Mazda 02-08 USB Android iPod iPhone Bluetooth AUX car kit
I am seriously considering going with this setup

Ya I hadn't even thought of NFC tagging, thanks.

I may lean towards this since I'm already on AOKP and I'll occasionally more than likely be streaming music as well......too bad My data limit is only 4gb

I just downloaded Fattin widget and when I get in my car I turn it on... It's pretty simple and does not require root or having to pay extra for hotspot.

Yup, i've been using that module for years with great success.. and the NFC tag idea is a good one... I have two tags in my car... one on the backside of gnex car holder and the other on n73g mount.

Works magically.

Are you using the Metra kit? If so how is the customization different from their instructions with the current head unit?

Also which Firmware did you get?

For the 1Q slot for the constant power (battery), is there a preferred method of leading the 14 gauge wire from the nav unit to the battery? Or do you just try and follow the rest of the wires?

I spent a good part of the day yesterday installing my nexus 7 in the dash and everything is working great! I'm using the pogo pins for audio and power.

I tried using the app Awesome On/Off to shut off and turn on the screen when it flips open but it didn't seem to work too well so I made my own app that works perfectly. I tried to take a lot of pics so I will start a thread and try to give some help to people who need it.

Thanks for all of the help!

you know the nexus 7 has a magnet sensor to turn the screen on and off right? put a magnet on the tray around the right side so when the housing flips down it will face where your chrome button is. that's how mine is set up.

I've got a Galaxy Tab 2 installed as well, and I'm using Tasker to turn DashCommand on and off when AC power is connected. It's not ideal though, because sometimes I don't want DashCommand to start when I hop in the car.

I tried using the accelerometer with Tasker to get it to turn on when the Nav hood flips up, but the tablet has to be pretty much be at a 180 degree angle face up for it to work. It'd be great if I could have it turn off when it flips down though (should work since it's completely face down), but I can't seem to get this to work in Tasker. I've tried other apps like Awesome On/Off that haven't worked, either.

I can get apps on my phone to turn on with the accelerometer, but they never turn off when I flip it over (like on the tablet). Anyone know why this might be? I'm just using a basic profile that should work:

State/Sensor/Orientation/Face Down ----> New Task/App/Kill App/DashCommand

Any ideas? My tablet is rooted btw, but I don't know if this action even requires the "Use Root" option.

I've never used Tasker but the only efficient way to shut off the screen of an Android device is to use the DevicePolicyManager's lockNow() method.

The app needs Device Administration privileges to do this. Go to: Android Settings / Location & Security / Device Administration and make sure Tasker is set as a Device Admin. It doesn't require root privileges.

Thanks. Is this option for locking the screen or just turning it off? I actually just need DashCommand to shut down, and the screen will time out on its own.

It should both lock it and turn the screen off. In the Tasker description it has "Display: Off/On/Unlocked". So it must be an option somewhere

Tasker should have an option for that. I am going to have to develop some good Tasker things for my tablet, since it won't be inside the Nav unit.

I just ordered a GROM with the bluetooth module as well, as I started to like the product and the potential it has. I will work with it to figure out the best solution for my tablet and to have things how I want them.

Progress for me developing the Launcher interface is going slower than expected (a lot more work than I thought) and I have been busy almost every single day. I will post an install DIY sometime this week when the GROM comes in.

What are you guys using to hold the tablet in place? A little worried about it shifting around due to bumps in the road and pressing on the screen.

If you cut the hood just right You don't need anything to hold it in place really. But I did use a hot glue gun just to be sure it stayed still. I went with hot glue cause its not permanent and if I ever needed to remove the tablet I could without damaging it.

That seems risky imo. I am going to make some brackets to hold the bottom of it (to fit on the Metra kit) that shouldn't be to hard to do. I then will glue them into place to hold the tablet still.
