Why....it is very stable the way it is....especially with the diagonal bracing ...

If you want more you need a cage More points

The Autopower roll bar is part of the cage kit....so you could buy the front and weld it in.....

You can weld/add too it all you want

That's what I did when I went racing with the RX7. I bought a used roll bar and found someone that had the rest of the cage kit setting around. Welding in the car while still having the interior is problematic. As we have said previously, street driving with a cage is dangerous.

Cause your head and the bars don't co-exist in the same space very well in an accident....

Think about it...would you want your head to hit the bar at 10mph? 50 mph?..I know I wouldn;t

Just found that also in researching. Thanks. I'm looking into a roll bar though, not a cage so it shouldn't be an issue. And nobody rides in my back seat. Only my wife once just to see if it would be comfortable. So I'm not worried about that either. Although its a four seater I deny back seat passengers.

Yep...no back seat passengers with a bar. I can't get in my back seat with the bar anyway..so it's easy

well if you decide to bring a passenger one day, they have a much higher chance to hit the bar in an accident than the passenger in the front.

i believe you also have to cut a hole in the side panel for the bar to go through. might want to source an extra 2 panels before you get the rollbar and realize you need to hack up interior.

That is def a negative so the idea I have in mind will not involve cutting any interior plastic. Its sort of a custom thing but I'm only in the beginning idea stages for now.

A rear roll bar in a car with a full interior looks weird... and is completely useless\potentially dangerous for street driving.
You have to remove the airbags that may hit the rear rollbar.

The only reason for a roll bar is to rice out your car, or to provide a place to attach harnesses.

They are still dangerous on a street car. If you actually looked at where it goes you'll see it's going to be where your head can hit it in an impact and will make your side airbags useless. Spend the money on good low-profile padding.

Definitely not intended for rice! My ricey Honda days are well in the past. The ultimate goal is to ,as you say, put in racing harnesses. I already have the Recaros in. Also an in car camera.

The design I have in mind actually will not block side curtain bags, hopefully or cut the interior plastic. My idea consists on one single overhead loop, a cross bar for harnesses, and a double bar in the middle to extend rear through the center pull-out cubby between the rear seats and into the trunk. And probably another support bar in the middle from the harness cross bar up to the rearward double bar at a 45* angle.

I would draw it for you but my artistic ability ends at stick figures.

Does the side curtain air bags extend the whole roof line or is there one front and one rear?

photoshopppp or mspaint lol

get a side shot of a rx8 and paste it into ms paint and then use the spraypaint tool in red to draw your design

LOL I just spent about 20 mins trying to "make" it in a side view in mspaint. It looks retarded. Like a ladder in the trunk.
I dont have photoshop nor do I know how to use it.
I cannot accurately depict what I see in my head...I cannot get the angle and depth perception right without it looking just stupid. Like a said I have no artistic talent.

Granted a roll bar won't pass any tech for sanctioned or club racing, but there's a reason why they mount to the wheel wells and the angled bars are at the angle that they are. I'm not a structural engineer, but i'd be leery of venturing off on my own. If you want a custom one, talk to a shop that makes cages for various different racing rulesets. I'd hate to see you spend the money and time to build a custom one only to not pass tech at an autox or even a club sponsored HPDE.

also airbags aside, if the main hoop is where it's supposed to be you run the risk of hitting your head on it in a collision, regardless of how the rest of it is designed.

Im still in the beginning stages of ideas as of now. Nothing is set in stone. I wouldn't be making it myself though. I know a couple guys through the shop I work at that make cages for the circle track cars in my area. I will be consulting them if I decide to pull the trigger and have it professionally made by one of them. One of them has made quite a few cages for the x-class cars which are all unibody chassis from what I know. I would trust his judgement on stress points. Hell, he may say my design is a bad idea and it will end right there

I regards to tech inspection, I dont expect to pass in a situation where a full cage is required, however I dont understand how it would fail in a situation where non caged/bar street cars are accepted? such as hpde or autox. Its obviously not a convertible

In autox it can simply put you into another class, like one of the mod or prepared classes.

HPDE's all depend on track rules and club rules but ultimately they can fail anything that they feel is unsafe.

I'm not saying that any of this would happen, just something to think about.

The kind of rollbar you're describing would just be dangerous in the event of a roll over.
