Cool. You might think about using a subwoofer geared more towards small boxes. The Alpine Type-R would be a great choice. The SWR-1042D or the SWR-1043D is the one you'll need. The 43 is just a newer model. I'd use either.
Agreed. I would have hit them with a layer of bondo. Then sanded. Then painted. Then covered with a layer of finishing resin...... or you could have just used another type of wood. That panel is super easy to un/reinstall, so you could take your time with it. I also would have bought a pint of the factory color paint. Or at least closer than the medium red...

would this be safe with the SWR-1043D fire?

And there's really no difference between the old and new models. Use whichever you can find cheapest.

Huh. I read Alpine's writeup they released at CES this year regarding their new subwoofer line up. It basically just said that the Type-S and Type-E models were going to get some of the design features that previously only the Type-R and Type-X models had. Guess I just assumed that meant the R and X were going to remained unchanged. But it just went on their website at they have the new subwoofers posted. Looks like several changes to the Type-R were made. Rock on. Get the 43.
