A sun crack is much different from what i have... Take a look at sun damage cracks on-line. Even the Mazda dealer said it wasnt from the sun. I'm sure their is many more people with the same problem. Its a defect for sure....

So i just picked up my car from the dealership and they told me that because the crack doesnt effect the operation of the srs airbag, it is not covered by the standard, recall, certified preowned, or extended warranty. pretty dumb.

oh and on a side note, they quoted me between $1,000 to $1,100 replace it, because it is not just a panel, its the airbag and all, in a package.

looks like im gonna have to learn to deal with a crack in my dash.

that might not be a great idea if it's right over the airbag. that section is designed to function a certain way during a deployment; putting a patch on it might alter that function. i don't think anyone can say for sure whether it will or will not, but i would bet Mazda would fight hard to disclaim any liability from a malfunction.

Yeah that thought had come to mind which is why I haven't done anything about it. I think I'm just going to let it go, when under the hot sun for a while the crack is much less noticable than when its cool, I can live with it. It is just annoying when you like to keep your car in mint condition as best as possible.

There is a fix at the dealer for this. Mazda picks up part of the tab. I found a good guy in my service dept.

I've counted about 15 people with the same problem on just this site. Seems to be a big problem with the RX-8 Dash

Don't know if I'd call it a big problem... there's 20X more of us who haven't had an issue.

The Dodge Ram was a big problem.

This is a common problem for those who lives in 37+ celcius ambience temperature without using a sunshade or windows visor to let hot air out of car. The crack will happen along the edges of the airbag module under the dash. I believe the dash is supposed to crumble when the airbag deploys, thats why it cracks so easily. I was quoted the dash piece for about 400 (first quote was 700+) from the dealer, this is after the dealer acknowledges this is a common problem locally.

(1) Forever leaking tail lights
(2) Cracking up dash

Two fails for these cars that should be addressed by Mazda.

The tail lights have been "addressed" in a TSB. They just offer a foam gasket that installs behind each taillight now.

My ride is an 05 model.
It had 5 to 6 long cracks. I fixed mine with black heat resistance sealant.
Here's the fix for 2 of them..

That looks pretty good. I wonder if it will hinder the deployment of the air bag?

The sealant only fills e crack, in no way its gonna hinder e airbag deployment.

I use a normal high temp black rtv silicon to do this job. U should be able to find similar in leading hardware stores. It cost me less than 5 bucks.

Went in for an oil change and they fixed my cracked sun visor and ordered a new dash, all covered under B2B, still got a few months left on that sucker

And then they told me they could hook me up with a pair of tires for almost $800, I tried not to laugh...
