Mine broke 2 weeks ago, dropped it off at the dealer on a saturday morning and picked it up in the afternoon free of charge no questions asked. They should cover this under warranty and most dealers know this is a common problem.

In the meantime if yours broke the way mine did and droops down so you can't drive just take it out. It's just 2 screws and you can pull the harness out and unclip it.

 

yeah same thing for me, i already did remove it. i went to mazda this weekend they said i gotta come back on a weekday and that i have to put it back on for when they "inspect" it.... they also said im not allowed to install the new one myself because im not ASE certified

 

Just got my 3rd one replaced (drivers side)...

After a couple of hours in the sun, mine broke today (1 month '06). I suppose this is a kind of initiation test, to make sure if we can put up with the cheapo-plastic stuff bolted to a very good chassis and engine. Ducatis used to be like this. At least you could replace everything with a carbon part. Any carbon sun visors in the market for the 8 (tongue in cheek)?

 

It's not the sun. I park in a garage at home and at work and I have been through too many. Very annoying, how hard can a visor be to make. screw the cool little holes give me damn visor that can stand up.

 

It just cracked, but I somehow associated it the "melted sun visor" issue (here and and here). Maybe I trust this site too much ...

BTW, I've been to the dealer this morning and they are replacing the visor under warranty. And I've got a oil and coolant fill-up for free. Aren't they nice?

I'm really disappointed, though, that Mazda hasn't done anything about this. I traded in an Audi for my RX8 and I thought that I'd be trading up in terms of reliability. Apparently not. ::sigh::

the only problem mazda cant seem to fix on my car is the sunvisors. everyting else was fixed the first time.

Just had my driver's side break today, same as everyone else..split down the back, now rotates freely. After looking at the passenger side, I would guess it would split too after a few more uses. You can see the plastic seam starting to seperate already.

Oh yeah, and while it has been hot here in VA, it isnt that hot...mid 80s and no sun today when it broke. Just seems to be a flimsy construction issue to me, rather than something melting in the heat.

 

MotherF!@$###%$@##@! My driver side visor broke again! This will be the third time. They are going to replace it no problem but it's a pain in the *** going to the dealer. Should I ask for something free?

 

I have had my 06 rex for less than a month. The driver-side visor cracked on me this morning, and my dealer says I have to wait 2 weeks for it because its on back-order. Until then, I'm driving around without a visor. Oh well. Not like it does much in terms of shade anyways, given its practically see-through.

I was not a happy camper at the dealership. I wrote in to Mazda (see link above).

You would think by their 06 models, Mazda would have redesigned this flawed part. It's got to be expensive for them to replace all the cracked visors under warranty.

If they can't even engineer a visor, I have to question the quality of the rest of the build. Damn...

Add me to the list of broken drivers side visors. Dealer fixed it within a week. Mine broke one week after the recent heat wave (mid90's for 7 to 10 days or so) in the NE so I am beginning to believe there is a connection to high temps and the breaks.

 

For those of you that haven't figured it out, the holes in the visor are a neat feature that lets you see traffic lights in direct sunlight. The holes are only show light for a couple degrees, so you just tip it slightly in other situations.

Many comments suggesting that the Mazda design of the visor is somehow related to their design ability or quality on the whole car.... The probability that Mazda manufactures the visor is pretty low. Most visors are made by separate, independant suppliers. The manual mirror on the base RX-8 is made in USA by Donnelly. It may be that Mazda is currently working with the supplier or trying to find a new one!

Sure would help if they'd release some info, if only to let their dealers know where this is going.

 

the visor is fine it's the method they use to melt it shut. if they used some kind of glue or melted the entier shaft into one pice it would never split. the internals are actually of quite strong materials ( just try and get the clamp off of that arm bracket.. ) when it gets hot the plastic as MUCH more pliable and stretches, after a couple of time the plastic weld fails, the clip doesn't stay flat and it splits the visor.

 

Dumb question—why aren't all the visors failing? Why are some failing, especially when it's hot—and others not failing in even hotter weather?? I never let mine "slam" back—might that have anything to do with it? (Watch—mine will fall apart today!)

 

the welds stretch a bit every time you use it.. eventually they will fail with enough use or when they feel like it. slamming wont hurt it as much as the initial opening. the arm has a flat spot that a very strong metal clamp must jump to the round part. it takes a LOT of force to hold the clamp still while rotating the visor. It's all i can do to hold the visor together with one hand and rotate the arm with the other, and I'm pretty damn strong. when it's all glued it's cake.





the steel on that ( the silver clamp, the black is just a retainer ) is thicker than my screwdriver.

 

I wish Mazda would read this thread.

 

I've had to replace mine 3 times, but it was covered by warranty so no problem. The Mazda dealership where i get my work done knew it was a faulty part, and they fix'd me right up w/ a new one.

 

Been waiting since Wed for my visor to show up.. if I'm lucky tomorrow I'll get a call saying they have it -:sigh:-

You are right on the money. it is a very nice feature if you ask me. Same with the slot to hold toll tickets.

This IS a Safety issue and it should have a recall done on it.
