08 nav disks in 04 nav system

pretty sure they won't. I believe Mazda changed the manufacturer on the Nav system for 06 and up cars.
There are newer maps available for the 04 nav system. Check with navteq and see what they go for.

im thinking about just buying a garmin and never opening out nav unit again

Mazda used one nav provider for 04-05, and then another from 06-08. The maps for the system in the 04-05s were only updated through 2005 (which, is basically 2004 maps). The 2005 edition cost $200, not worth it for such outdated stuff IMO.
You might be able to switch out the DVD drive of the newer system for your older one, or certain components to run the newer system's maps, but I haven't read anything on it and it would be expensive. I ended up just selling my nav system parts because of the map issue.
