I think you are just so new to the 8 that you don't realize how ingrained and natural it will become. This morning I went out and started my Miata, taking it in to work today, and then realized that I hadn't taken care of something inside, and it was going to be a bit. Since my driveway is RIGHT on the street, I didn't want to have it just sitting there running, theft and all. So I let my Miata warm up before shutting it off. It wasn't until I was back in the house that I realized what I did...
Sure, go ahead and develop it, but you aren't going to have much of a market
I should probably also add that I have intentionally shut it off cold a few times, namely when I need to move it in my driveway for proper positioning prior to jacking it up (unlevel/smooth driveway), for work on my exhaust. Each time trusting my ignition to start it back up.
The amount of extra fuel dumped in was somewhat remarkable.

Well, mostly, yeah. That was when I removed the cat and swapped on the BHR midpipe. Dripping with fuel.
Cold might not be the ONLY reason, but we know one of the official flashes postponed the richening up of the trims when cold, and I had it running long enough to get into that, though not much longer after. Then it sat in the housing and header for about 8 hours, so there is probably some carbon that it disolved as well. Then with no cat to catch any of it.....poof!
That's the theory anyway.

I bought an 06 and before I knew about the flooding problem shut it off cold many times with no problem. The car always had a rough idle. When I started to mod it I noticed that only 2 of the 4 plugs were hooked up. A leading on 1 rotor and a trailing on the other. The other 2 leads had been damaged by the previos owner enough that they could not be used. Even with a rough idle and only 2 plugs I never had a flooding problem so I guess whatever Mazda did really fixed the problem.
