Take out the horn assy. There are three screws holding it in. The horn assy is two pieces. These are snapped together. To get them apart, it is easiest if you warm them up and use something like a small flat screwdriver to pop them apart. Be careful not to break the plastic tabs. Once you remove this assembly you will see what we mean. Once these two pieces are taken apart, the first screen can come out. Once the screen is out, put the two pieces back together and reinstall the horn assembly back in the airbox.

OK, I'm no mechanic...but I've done plenty of simple things before on my other cars like change oil, air filter, replace starter, new brake pads & rotors(little tougher) etc., etc... Now I feel like an idiot because I can't even get the cover open on the intake box. The accordion hose behind it isn't giving much at all and I don't want to force it too much. According to the simple instructions in the manual I should be able to unplug wiring, pop clips and open the lid...I can get it open about an inch, probably not even enough to get the old filter out, let alone those two baffles. I must be missing something obvious here.

Basically, take off the engine cover first. You then "push" towards the car until the two gromlets infront comes off. After it's off, put your fingers where the two gromlets infront are. Lift as hard as you can and the bottom gromlets will dislodge itself. That's pretty much it.

Wow! That was an amazing response time, 2 minutes, LOL! I think I was able to get that loose. So do I need to disconnect the big hose and take the whole box out in order to get it open? Thanks for responding so quickly

You don't have to remove the rubber hose after you get it loose; the box can stay in the engine bay since it opens up pretty wide. I guarantee you that you'll have alot of room to work with. I tend to respond to the threads I make really quickly. Thanks for the compliment.

So do I need to get the front side of the box up out of the car? Once I get it loose the box still won't open more than about an inch, I'll go muscle it again and see if it'll budge...I must be doing something wrong, lol.

Look at the second picture in the link, do you see the gromlets? Basically, the easiest way is to push the whole box towards the engine. This will get the two front gromlets loose. There are two more on the bottom, this one is really hard to pull out. Basically, just push up as hard as you can and it'll just literally "pop" right out.

OK, finally got it out, broke the plastic a little on the inlet side trying to get it around that stupid wire that should run under it, not over it...now I'm not sure how I'll get it back in there without breaking that plastic off. I'm 220 pounds, and I couldn't get that thing back far enough to clear that stupid little wire holder....grrr. Not even sure I want to risk trying to take out that first screen, lol.
I went ahead and put it back together, which is dumb because I'll just have to open it back up again to drop in the K&N but oh well....an air filter should never be that hard to get to.

pardon my ignorance but which one is the air box and wat is VFAD?
this sounds like a good idea, but i dont know alot about the car itself.
do i have to have a K&N like 3DZukini for something to work?

The key is to pull up on the two holes on the back where the engine cover goes into. After pushing it back and pulling up on these, the only difficulty was getting it up and over that damn plastic bit holding the wire towards the front...

Have been running with no screens for over 6 months now without issue . Last week I took out the plastic dividers in the intake as well just to try it out .
Don't know if this is a coincidence or not but on the odd ocasion I'm finding the idle dies away alarmingly now . I'm going to put the dividers back in and see if that cures the issue .

Hi brettus, hows the weather up North..lol.. had same type of problems with the K&N V2 Pod filter, idle drops down abit. I would do a log with the scanalyser before and after, see if it logs any thing different
