RP Short Shifter (get in the queue...!)

The only trick is the trim and both philodox and cortc have writen on that. You just have to know to put your finger in the hole(I know, I know)and push the little tab to remove the panel.

Is this the thread you were infering? philodox thread
Yes except that I'm not sure you pull the little tab towards the driver side. I think I pushed towards the passenger side. You'll be able to see just don't push to hard. Also you don't need to take the four bolts out anymore with my system. You just take it out the top and drop in the new one.
Is this the lockout plate you're talking about? Glowing green.
And the shift tower is red piece?
So we just remove the green and not touch the red?
Or am I totally missing something.
Sorry, I'm visual. :D

Sweet!!
Does anyone know if his has a built in plate or something? Or do we reuse the stock one? I'm under the impression judging by his instructional notes, we dont need one. But that wouldn't seem logical..... hmm.
I guess I should just shut up and wait till I get mine and then look how to install haha. :p

You had it right the first time, like gomez said "you got it".
You do reuse the stock lockout plate. In your photo Green, then the shift assembly just lifts out. Drop in the new one, put the plate back on and it's done.
The old way or MS way you had to remove the red part also, in order to install a spacer plate with extended dowels.
You'll see, this is easier then putting a sticker on. I can't think of an easier mod. Anyway we are all right here to help. Can't say if anybody is going to run right over to Hawaii to help. Unless you pay the airfare and then I guarentee there will be a line half mile long.

seriously though, this is a simple install. On a scale of 1-10 I would say this rates as maybe a 3 on the difficulty scale. That's just because taking the center cosole portion off is tricky. Basically, if you know how to use a socket wrench, you know how to change out this shifter.

Jon, I'll bet you'd like a ticket to Hawaii. Understand you've got another even bigger storm coming in. Glad it's not me. Maybe if you convince him that it is hard to put in you'll get a ticket.

But yes, the install sounds easy enough. Taking apart the console is no biggie as I had to do it to install the MP3 deck. Just a PITA.
Does the RP shifter sit lower than the MS one? How about vs stock? I got the impression during this thread that it changed heights during development. Something about +5mm, -5mm, 10mm.. hmm?
In any case, now I can't wait for the shifter to arrive!! :D

Dann that's so you can slip it in easy.
Rx nut, The shifter is now 5mm lower then stock. It got there because with the spacer plate as used by MS and we had originally the **** was 10mm higher then stock. We didn't want that so we split the dif and made the shaft 5mm shorter so it was then only 5mm higher then stock and 5mm lower then MS. Following this?? Then we found a way to eliminate the spacer, thereby lowering the shaft 10mm. That with the previously removed 5mm left it 5mm lower then stock and 15mm lower then MS.
Got all that, right?

what the hell is all this 5mm/+ 5/10mm - all about ....is it that important to have a fraction more or less shift throw,of course I not in a race... :p .................................... :D

Gomez.
Relax, Richard....It's Australia Day (our 4th July), I'm trying to watch Molik beat Davenport, the Aussies in the cricket, and listen to the Hottest 100 on JJJFM Radio. I'm busy as a bull in a field of cows atm....

This is gonna take a while, so bear with me
. Okay. It's in. It arrived yesterday in a box so small I thought Richard had sent the **** by mistake! Well wrapped in paper and enclosed in a plastic bag all greased up and ready to go. Installation was a cinch and took 40 mins incl photos.
Here's the console cover/shift boot is removed showing the clips that secure it. Use a small screwdriver to pry the small access panel AFT, not up. The panel is in the fwd RH corner of the fwd console compartment. Sorry no pics of it. The securing clip in the lower left corner of this pic is a bugger. You have access to this clip now you've removed the small panel, use your finger to release the clip and push the console cover up. Once that clip is released, gently pry the shift boot and cover up and off the console. Six clips in all.
Edit....some of you are going to have to remove connectors to the Audiopilot and seat heater switches(?)

This is what you now have. You will have to undo the two screws that secure the ashtray, pull the ashtray aft and undo three connectors. I could only manage to unclip two. In my eagerness to get this thing in, I left the backlight connected and dangled the whole assy off to one side.
Remove the two harness clips securing the wiring harness over the shift boot studs with a small flat blade screwdriver. You can now undo the four 10mm nuts and remove the upper rubber shift boot. This boot is held on by love, now you've removed the four nuts.....gently twist and pry it off by hand. There is another boot under it.

You can see in this pic the 3 bolts you need to remove to pull the shifter. Undo these and lift the shifter up and out. The lower part of the shifter is covered in gearbox oil....take care not to drip it on the seats.
The two shifters side by side....Richard's on the left. Note the white ring half way up, this seals the upper boot to the shifter as you'll see in later pics. Also note the reverse lockout tang which is pointing out on the right, without this there'd be nothing to stop you accidentally selecting reverse without pushing down on the shifter. You'll see that the original shifter has had all the grease washed off it by the gearbox oil.
You can see Richard has removed the bend at the top of the shifter which allows a vertical shift **** when neutral is selected. I wanted this feature retained, but now find I don't even notice it. No big deal at all. See also the higher pivot point, it's this that provides the shorter shift.
The retaining ring off to the side of the shifters is the original, and needs to be re-used.
