Jim just replied and asked that NOBODY post the install instructions here! He said that overseas companies could use them to copy their design - and that would be BAD for all of us.

My lips are sealed - so nobody post these please. Mods, if you see anyone post them, please delete them ASAP.

I agree with Jim, and will not even ask that they get posted for any RB products in the future.

The RB site has been updated and the REVi intake is now available! Has anyone tried it yet?

I have their exhaust system and it is awesome. Someone please post their opinions on the intake such as sound, performance, ease of install etc, please. I have been waiting for this ever since I got my exhaust.

As far as installation goes, the instructions include everything from start to finish with photos; including removing the nose of the car. Tools are simple; small philips, flatblade, small socket with 10mm socket; 10mm wrench, pair of pliers. I had never removed the nose either but it was pretty easy and was much lighter than I expected; I did the whole job by myself easily. Important thing is to read the instructions CAREFULLY and don't assume you know what it's going to say. Pay attention to when it says "use the screws provided" or "keep what you've removed for later use". One thing I left out in my description was when inserting the MAF sensor into the RB housing (a beautiful blue anodized aluminum tube) look at it from the side and press firmly enough to make sure it seats completely so you can't see any light between the seal of the MAF and the housing. It's somewhat tight to fit in but press until it goes in. If it's really tough, RB recommends a tiny bit of lubricant around the tube opening to help getting the MAF sensor to seat properly.

With regards to feeling only 3 hp, I also have RB's exhaust and the combo works really well. I may be getting more than a normal boost compared to the intake with stock exhaust. Acceleration feels stronger...period. From a standing start; easy acceleration; hard acceleration; freeway passing acceleration. It's not mind-blowing but it's definitely noticeable. This was a great upgrade and definitely worth the money to me. :D
Thanks for the write up! Can you post some pics? I've seen the pics on RB's website, but I'd like to see how it looks in an actual engine bay. Can you still use the engine cover?

I agree that it would not be good, but seriously - if those "overseas" companies really wanted to steal the design and have the instructions, all they have to do is to buy an intake... not that big of an investment.

hey, my car came with a typhoon on it ( bought it used) and i was wondering if i would need any stock intake parts to make the revi hook up to my baby, i hope i dont need any, but that damn typhoon may throw a kink in my plans yet....

Yes, you need some of the stock components. I know there in your garage with the stock box. You can always buy those parts if you need them.

That is an excellent point, I think if they really wanted to get a hold of the instructions they could do so very easily.

rotarygod, how does this box affect the resonant Helmholtz tuning of the intake? The stock hi-power has 2 tuned lenghts, the long pipe and the short vfad. This one effectively eliminates the long pipe and uses just the short one, you seem to like it a lot so could you give us your intake tuning theory on it? As an engineer, I love all these technical discussions.

I read the R.B. website info on this issue and they are of the opinion that the RX-8's VFAD isn't tuned for power, it is tuned for noise reduction. Given the black box on the side of the rubber intake pipe I would say that there has been considerable time and money spent on this very issue.

I'm a little confused. Isn't the Racing Beat intake supposed to improve something, notably performance/HP? Otherwise, why change the stock intake. But the Racing Beat website provides no data about performance increase or HP increase.

Does anyone here know the HP increase from dynos?

I know that they have countless hours on their engine dyno designing this, they do not publish as of yet any dyno sheets so to say. It is more of a trust relationship with them at this point in time.

The best part of the intake is that it will be upgradeable this summer with the ram air duct!

Sometimes parts provide a better oppoprtunity for forward planning than immediate gain. For example, my Borla cat-back didn't provide any stand-alone gains but by installing it I was making sure that it wasn't a bottleneck when I started using nitrous. I am sure that those who elect to install a cat-back on their turbo cars will find slight gains by doing so.

R.B. may be thinking the same thing. Plus, some people are just not happy believing that the factory stuff is quite capable of meeting their needs no natter what you tell them.

As Charles has already said, RB states that it isn't for power but for noise control. I was always under the assumption that it was a tuning device. This seemed like the logical use since everything else on the car is tuned in a similar manner. Apparently even the sound is tuned. When I installed the RB intake I noticed that the VFAD long duct was fabric with lots of air leaks. I bcame suspicious at this point as to how this piece could actually tune with any benefit. I just figured that without this tube, the dual ducts were both about the same length and this was the basis of their tuning. As it turns out the tuning isn't for power but for noise. Mazda has been using the same principle of tuning but used it for a different effect. Apparently we don't have to worry about the tuning of the intake itself as this is purely for sound. The intake manifold is where the most beneficial pressure waves are anyways.

RotaryGod, (I feel like I'm praying or something... lol) I understand that many intakes and exhausts are more beneficial when combined with other parts (i.e. FI) but am I wrong in saying that you are of the belief that this intake would beneficial (albeit a less so) on an otherwise stock 8?

I do feel that this intake will provide a gain in power. I'm not going to say that it will make a huge difference but it definitely does something. The ram air duct should be a nice addition to it later on. It is the only aftermarket intake that I would use.
