Gone back to stock shifter..

Feels weird, such a long throw compared and not as notchy.

However i can now get into 5th an 6th easier, and i can actually make reverse every single time instead of sometimes missing and popping out....

Has anybody else NOT had a perfect experience with the Axial flow shifter (As it seems most of you have had excellent luck with it!), i would love to continue using it, but having to shift into reverse then back into 6th then reverse again to actually get it to stay in gear makes my car feel like a toy rather than the well crafted piece of engineering it is.

My car does not like to go into reverse sometimes and I use the stock shifter. Given that I don't use reverse much, I don't care and 1-6 runs nice. Usually, a little clutch work in neutral or a 1-2-R shift will get me in.

The tab on the shifter needs to be adjusted on some cars so it will go into some gears...the gate is narrow and the tab may limit 5-6-rev

Go visit Richard...and he will fix it for you...or give him a ring. He's good with the customer service on these.......

I had modified the tab slightly, but 5-6th was still a bit of a problem, i would like to visit him and have i sorted as i LOVE the 1->4 shifting with the Axial flow shifter.

He is up in chatsworth, correct?

I drove my brother's car with his OEM shifter and wow, what a difference! I can't believe how far the shifter moved side to side and how rubbery it felt. Going back is just wrong!
Get Richard to fix it. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm always available to help solve problems. Give me a call and see if we can fix it long distance. If not and I know what is wrong you can send it back. If it is tolorance specific to your car (and I think it is) then I'll have to see it. We are now located in Simi Valley, Ca. The phone is the same. Or PM me.

Hey Camel8, I did some research and you got your shifter well over a year ago.
How come you are just now having trouble shifting into gears? Have you been suffering all this time without saying anything?
I need to know when things are not right, it helps me find future problems that might effect others. Not to mention my reputation.
I looked up your posts when you installed yours and you said you took .010 off the tab and that fixed it. Do you think you went to far? I get confused with who has what so you need to keep me updated.

I ended up swapping mine out too,

Its a longer throw, but less notchy and easier to get into gears...especially with my tranny being goofy.

Im going to throw in the shortie later this week to compare after 2 months of stock shifter

i swap it back to stock almost everytime i take my car to the dealer for over night service work and i just cant take driving the car with such long throws.... the good thing is that the throws feel silky smooth. but i guess im still too use to the short shifter and once i swap it back, the shifting feels good and consistence as if the car shouldve came with this shifter.

I apologize for not saying anything earlier, i have been having problems for a good few months and i have not said anything....

You are right, i did take about 0.01 off the tab and that helped 5 & 6, but i also think i did go too far, and maybe that is my problem with reverse?

I had to take the pins out of the shifter gate, and position that accordingly to get it into 5&6th at all...

Maybe its a tolerance thing and maybe i did too much modification... I didnt want to harm your business though... i will be in touch soon (Need a service first and i dont want the dealer bitching about it)

I still say there's no performance difference but the AF shifter feels sooooo much better, no way I'm going back to OE ....

Initially after I installed my Axial Flow I swapped back to the stocker for a little while, due to the noise with the combo of the Axial flow and my VooDoo ****. After speaking with Richard, I ended-up re-installing the Axial flow SS and swapping back in my stock **** and things got a lot quieter. I certainly like the axial flows direct feel, but there is more tranny noise transmitted than with the stock shifter, at least in my specific experience. Its tolerable for me though, and a worthwhile trade-off for the shifting performance. My wife hates it for sure though (maybe a good reason to keep it in for a while!), and wishes the stocker was back in.

By comparison, other makes of cars also have SS shifters that have similar trade-off's. Kartboy shifters for the Suby's are a great example. Everyone seems to love them, but from firsthand experience I can tell you they are far from perfect. Precise and direct? Sure. Noisier than the stock shifter? Absolutely. Alternatively I am reminded of a Tanoga SS that I installed in my Audi S4 though, it was both precise and quiet just providing proof positive that a product can provide both. It was a true pain in the @$$ to install though, so there is another trade-off we don't have to deal with.

Take a trip up to Richard's, check out the Supercharger, and get your shifter fixed.

I know I'm going to regret this.........
Let's say that the AFE shifter shortens the throw 100 something or others meaning the stock was 0. Now lets say that I built a shifter that shortens it 75-80. Would that shifter make everyone happy with less effert and I don't know about noise.
I don't know, so I built one and it is in my car for the last 6 weeks. I'm ready to go back to the regular one as I hardly see the difference except I miss the nochy direct feeling some complain about. Since I never had noise I can't say anything about that. You will notice the throw difference but not back to stock for sure.

I'm interested to know if this is a better compromise then the original. Therefore I'm going to let some people try it. If your one of the complainers here's your chance. I'll take the one out of my car and you guys can try it for a week then pass it to someone else. Sorry there is only one unit that is available. There is one more that we scraped by making the pivoit hole oversize. That could be brought into service if I make a special pin .003 oversize. That's kinda PITA but I haven't thrown it out yet.

So who is having the most trouble and wants to try this? I'm going to want you to mail it to the next guy and I need to know where it is at all times. After all there is only one available.

Tell us your tale and I'll see who gets it first. You have to have one of my shifters to start with, no cheaters. I have a list of all the ones we have sold.

I'm going to remove it from my car in the next couple of days. I'm going to put my old one back in and see how it feels to me.

Just another little service to get everyone happy. Except that one guy who doesn't even have one. I guess that's not too bad compared to 600+ who are happy.

Richard,

What a nice guy you are...really.. no @$$ kissing here, but you have to be one of the most genuine guys out there when it comes to aftermarket parts. I realize that the OP was having issues with shifting action, but I personally wouldn't trade mine in for a lesser throw or a less direct feel, as the difference between stock and your shifter is what makes me want to keep it. Fortunately I am not having issues with shifter action, but....if you ever find a way to isolate the drivetrain sound to the level of the stocker then I would pay for that upgrade. Again, the sound I get is not enough to make me want to change it out, and if I were faced with buying another I would do it in a heart beat. However, if I could have the best of both worlds I would want it though.

Thanks again

Jeff

i have the afe short shifter and absolutely love it. i drove a stock equipped one the other day, and for no reason, unless it blew up, would go back to the stock shifter. never had a problem getting it into reverse and all gears feel smooth as butter. A little bit of RP 75-90 max gear keeps the noise down, as well as the stock ****. my $.02, if your going to redesign one, make the height of the shifter shorter. overall though, its the best mod on my car right now.

so..... if I understand this thread correctly, if I complain enough, instead of going from 100 down to 80, you will make one at 120 for me?

okay! my afe sts throws are too long, and there isn't enough noise. damn it man, I don't have gorilla arms!

That would be a great idea, but others can go first, my problem is 5-6th and reverse, i LOVE the notchyness of the "100%" shifter

I've had short-shifters on all of my cars over the years and Richard's is the least problematic and most functional.
That said, it was the second attempt that yielded the best result, so send yours back to Rich and let him help you and the product improve.

i'd buy an even shorter throw shifter, even at the expense of more noise.
