Mazdaspeed Body Kit

Making the Mazdaspeed body not legal for STX is going to suck. I really want my aero on track days, and swapping that many parts between SCCA and track days is going to suck.

What car caused SCCA to make this change?

Picked up the new shocks last week for the RX8, and installed them over the weekend.

Will post more pics of the install once I clean up the car.

It was made illegal with the bumper cover change from last season, according to the STAC. According to them Mazdaspeed Accessory != Mazda Accessory.

Would have been nice to run the Mazdaspeed wing...

I'm doing my research now and depending on a few different scenarios it could happen this season. BTW, I believe you may now have something that will help with that decision. Congrats!

New solo rules are out (DRAFT!!!)

http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/...raft_1-12r.pdf

And according to 13.9.a

The BHR ignitions kits should be legal again (I assume they mount to the stock points)

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Again this is just a draft!

The BHR was legal all along. It does use the stock mounting points.

They banned additional mounting brackets in a fast track that made it again illegal.

Perhaps now they just clarified it a bit.

The rule itself never changed; what is legal "now" was legal "before."

The apparent incongruity of the Tech Bulletin notwithstanding, this clarification "clarifies" the previous TB "clarification" that made things less clear.

Not quite. This is the new text which, if adopted, will make the BHR kit (as opposed to just the coils) legal:

Section 13.9A:

Substitution or addition of ignition coil mounting brackets is permitted,
provided they affix to the original standard location and serve no
other purpose.

The BHR kit was always legal. They are simply clarifying the language to communicate that changes to other OE components are not allowed. This has always been the case, but it was implied rather than stated. Even then a clarification can always be challenged. It does not disallow or prevent a protest. It is just an opinion that a Protest or Appeals Committee may not agree with depending on the information at hand. The earlier opinion was changed due to it representing a rule change. It was just a flawed opinion relative to what the allowance permitted, nothing more.

Wings vs. Wings

So, well, section 14 of the 2012 rules reads in part "In particular, some leeway in the area of bodywork allowances (e.g., wings/spoilers beyond those allowed in 14.2.F) is encouraged at Regional Solo events." (section 14.2.F being the one that specifically outlaws MazdaSpeed parts).

So can you run an APR wing, but not a MazdaSpeed one?

No. Some regions may or may not be more flexible on that particular subject.

14.2.F states that the mazdaspeed wing is not "listed in the vehicle manufacturer’s US accessory catalog for that vehicle for normal highway use." So under strict order of the rules it is illegal, any other aftermarket would would be illegal as well (this includes the APR wing). The only legal wing for the RX8 would be the one from the appearance package.

I need some clarification cause I am getting confuscus with all the rules. I will state my mod list and what I know is ilegal and then my question:

AEM intake
BHR ignition
BHR midpipe (not legal...needs CAT)
ACT Flywheel
ACT Clutch (not legal...need to return to stock)
Greddy Exhaust
Forgestar 18x10 (not legal...cannot be wider then 9 inches)
Cobb AP
Koni yellows
Tein S-Techs

Suspension: I thought I read somewhere that you are not allowed to have coilovers with a remote resevoir for STX...It sounds like I am obviously mistaken?

If I go Turbo then what class would that move me to? BSP? Could I keep the above non-legal components in BSP?

I'm still trying to make heads or tails of the rules.

not legal: AEM intake (without mods), ACT flywheel

you are in BSP now as it stands, turbo would be Street Modified

You're just as likely to get your butt kicked there no different than BSP, STX, or CS

Motion Control shocks feel freaking awesome on the street. So comfortable, yet the car dives a lot less on breaking. Am a huge fan!

Anyone looking for a set of Koni 3011 shocks?
