I think the PF01's would be a good choice. If I were shopping for STX wheels right now, they'd be on the top of my list.

Meh, yeah R comps are nice and all but I still want to improve on my own skills a bit more before getting a set of R comps. Think I'll run star specs of 255/35 next year and then R comps the following. That'll be fun. :D

With the money I'll be spending on my car over the winter, I may just do the Finger Lakes NT and call it a season in 2010. Definitely want to do some sort of school, a couple test & tunes, and a bunch of local events in 5-6 different regions/clubs to get as much seat time as possible.

Got my Racing Beat intake and adjustable rear swaybar installed this weekend. Hope to complete the exhaust stuff in the next 6 weeks.

^I'm not sure how far north you are, but you should make it down for the Cecil GA event. Looks like they had a pretty strong showing in STX this season.

You mean the Dixie NT in March? I've gone there the last two seasons, but I'll definitely be skipping it next year. I actually don't expect to have my car "ready" until April.

The Finger Lakes NT is closer to me and the STX turnout is always strong there. I may even skip the DC Pro for the first time in 3 years. Just not sure at this point. I'd just rather put money into my car, than burn it up by traveling to national events all over the country (in a semi-prepped car). Hopefully, by the start of 2011 season, she'll be well-prepped and ready to roll!!!!

Ride Frequency

Did some calculations yesterday. KWs have a 455 front spring rate. With a .752 installation ratio & 700 lb unsprung weight, that gives a ride freq of 2.66 Hz. A little lower if I throw in a guess at the tire spring rate.

I've had folks (succesful folks at that) say that perhaps this should be a little higher, but those folks were setting up strut cars. Not sure if it's needed for a double wishbone car.

Any opinions? Anybody going to try something closer to 3 Hz?

You'll have to forgive me if I've missed it as I've looked everywhere..but what the hell wheels is Jason running this year? They look pretty decent. They look similar to the wheels you're running as well Doc, but I could be wrong too. Let me in on the secret please? :D Also, am I pretty much the only RX8 on this board who runs in SM? Makes me wonder if I should unmod so I can go into STX or something..lol

Marc,

Jason is on Forgeline wheels. Not sure which model, but their stuff is uber pricey as it's custom. A friend of mine has a set on his E46 M3 and they ran him around $800 per wheel iirc. Too pricey for my blood...

I think the RX-8 could do well in SM with the right choice of "power adder".

Good to know, thanks. :D As for power.. Wouldn't TOO much power be a bad thing?

I've yet to see someone who's making too much with an RX-8. I've seen a dyno graph for the Strelnieks' 3-rotor SSM RX-7, and that beast makes ~480whp with a torque curve that's flat as a pancake.

Edit: Here it is...

With those values, my calculations come in at 1.9 Hz, not 2.66 Hz. I am assuming you meant 700 lb of sprung weight.

2 Hz is entering the regime of aero racecars. You would need 900 lb/in springs to get to 2.66 Hz. Perhaps you have a factor of 2 error somewhere in your calculation. I have 900 lb/in springs in my s2000 with a similar motion ratio and it's very stiff. Not fun on bad roads, but great on smooth tracks. It can handle r compounds no problem, but I am going to be reducing the spring rate in search of more mechanical grip on less-than-ideal surfaces (ie autox parking lots).

Yes, I mean sprung weight, thanks.

I'll double check my math tonight. My car certainly isn't uncomfortable in it's curret state.

That's what I assumed you meant...

While there probably is a limit (would vary depending on surface grip level), if an SSM FD can utilize ~480whp, I'm sure our cars could be set-up to work in an autocross setting at that power level.

That's the beauty of Street Mod, in many ways you get to set the limit.

Hrmph. No spring rate information in Jason's STX build-up article in Sports Car.

Some interesting tidbits, though:

- MS front bar, no rear bar. Must mean some fairly aggresive spring rates?
- neg 3 front camber, -2.5 rear. 1/2 degree more than I ran, F&R.
- Nice Hp numbers (221/154), but it was on a Dynapack hub dyno. Not sure how those compare to a Mustang.
- Sweet wheels & brakes (but we already knew that)

A nice build, to be sure.

Spot on - I had 2*pi under the sqrt, needed 4*pi.

So, as you say, 1.88 Hz. 1.68 for the rear, with a quoted spring rate of 285, but that's a progressive spring so who knows what I actually get. These numbers makes a little more sense as my car has moderate body roll and is quite comfortable day to day, with the stock seat.

This is where Mark tells me to raise it up (the ride height that is.

500 lbs on the front gives 1.97 Hz, 550 = 2.07.

Meh. I should probably just leave it and optimize the setup (and my driving!).

Deleting the rear sway is also something I've wanted to try. It's common in the Miata world, but I know that at least part of the reason for that is the funky spring rates the JDM coilovers come with (too much rear spring).

Perhaps I'll try a stiffer linear spring on the rear with no rear sway, see if the power goes down better.

Just opened up my copy. The springs rates are shown in the little specs table at the end of the article. 500 front, 350 rear.

lol why don't you just codrive with me anyways? :P No super charger for me. It's either going to be a rebuild with porting... or well..I dunno. Want to stay away from Turbo/Super charging though. For awhile at least.
