shooting in the dark...

with or without air pump? and also i'd be tempted to log coolant temp, and maybe intake temp on a cold start, maybe one of them gives funky readings when its cold.

my grey car, did something a little like this, it would start and idle ok, but giving it some throttle on a cold engine it would just stop running for a second, its EXACTLY like a carburetor with a bad accelerator pump, no CEL either!

^The air pump is required to be in place and functional for the STX class.

It could be any number of things. Without specific logs and additional OBD2 data all anyone can do is guess.

Took first in Pro and FTP yesterday running with the East Tennesee Region at Bristol, Great site with some awesome elevation changes, the back section was super bumpy, with the low camera angle you can really see the Moton's doing work!

I drove my friend's STX prepped FR-S at autocross a few weeks ago, and I have to say it was pretty incredible, if anything is going to unseat me from this RX-8 it'll be one of the 86 twins. Just my luck my wife has a BRZ and the ability to become bored with a car in under 3 years! Perhaps I will inherit it when the time comes that the RX-8 goes **** up.

Hi, I've been autox'ing in 2006 RX-8 STX for two years with the San Francisco region.

I'm dyno'ing at around 150 rwhp and compression is around 6.9@270 (see this post), so I'm weighing my options for a rebuild.

1. Has anyone had much luck getting Mazda to cover issues like this under warranty? I've heard that compression needs to be below 6.0@250.

2. Is it STX legal to buy an engine from a 6MT series 1 of a different model year (e.g., a 2004), have that rebuilt, then swap it in? I know there is no update/backdate allowance in ST*, but I can't find any mention of engine differences between series 1 model years. Anyone know? Series 2 is different obviously.

3. Is it common practice for builders to use non-oem bits in the engine that wouldn't be STX-legal? I remember there being an issue with Hollis's ST civic a few years back where a builder used a few ST-illegal parts that were considered common practice in the Honda community.

4. From digging around in the forums, these are the reputable builders I could find: black halo racing, rotary resurrection, pineapple racing, pettit racing. Anyone I should add? Bonus points if they are anywhere close to SF.

there is a chart floating around of the compression vs rpm, if you're failing then your chances are pretty good, if there is a drivability problem, like it not wanting to hot start, your chances are better

Mazda uses the same part number for the engine from 2004-2006, 2007-2008 have a different number (not sure why), and then 09+ is different.

like what? there basically aren't any aftermarket engine parts, the only thing you'd want from an older engine is the FD oil pressure regulator

Unfortunately, the charts I saw say as long as you're above 6.0@250 its a pass, and my only symptoms are (much) lower than expected power

Thanks, I didn't realize there was a part number for the overall engine. I thought I would have to compare part numbers for all internals, which sounded like a nightmare.

That's what I was looking for. I wasn't sure if the rebuilds were "better than oem" because they pay more attention to detail or because they used better parts.

solid corner seals, ceramic/carbon/alternative apex seals, solid thermal pellets, alternative side seals, race bearings, lightened rotors ???

None of which would be STX legal.

It would have been a lot more epic if Jeff and Jeff stayed dirty so I could have taken the win It was a fun weekend. Looking forward to doing it again in a couple weeks.

I won't be at the Pro Finale, so good luck to everyone out there. Hopefully you aren't all partied out by the time I arrive on Weds.

Damn straight! Can't wait to see everyone at Nats as well! I'll be arriving Sunday night, so no ProFinale for me (good luck guys!). Monday I'll be doing practice runs around 11, so hopefully I'll catch up with everyone after!

I'm staying for the whole week as well, so I definitely will be there to check out the racing and lend a hand wherever needed!

I'll be there on Monday. Got lucky today and got a paddock space in row 1 (I assume because somebody canceled). Sometimes procrastination pays.

Row 1 is reserved for Officials. You're on the backside of Row 2 not far from the west end though, so that's a good spot relative to the courses & vendors just the same. I'm not far away on the very west end of Row 2, so let me know if you need anything. Should be in Lincoln on Thursday before the Pro Solo Finale.

Looks like Jeff Hurst is the only RX8 close to the top after today's running of STX, currently 3rd just barely 7 thousandths out of second and only about 0.35 sec out of first. Mike Kuhn and Steve O'Blenes are the only two other RX8 drivers n the trophies sitting 11th and 14th respectively. Jeff Anderson is the first non-trophy driver in 17th place codriving Broda's RX8.

59 drivers total so quite a tough STX field. This is my first year for not being there having broken my 16 year straight streak.

In STXL, Gretchen Austin has her RX8 well positioned in 1st place with a 0.8 sec lead over 2nd place. Jordon Towns is in 3rd place with Sparky's RX8 with 4 trophies total.

Good luck to all tomorrow.

As Mark said, it's tough sitting at home watching/listening. Good luck to all tomorrow including the three drivers in CS!

Would've been a short showing for me two years ago without a sway bar bracket from Chris Carmenini who is currently one spot out of trophies.

Also forgot to mention that Mark Andy aka Howdy-Doody, is positioned well in a 5th place trophy spot for RTR with his RX-8
