Wow...it was a really hot day...my radiator fluid spilled all over the K&N Intake (well, not much of it but it scared me)...the temp gauge liked to be half way between normal and red.

Are you guys running 5W-20 on the track? It seems like at such high temps it would not be an ideal choice.

Anyone have a biggest-bang-for-the-buck cooling mod? I'm planning to track it once a month, so a little worried about the coolant temp! Does Water Wetter help?

I would use 10-40 or 5-30 at the track. Add some pre-mix.

Don't keep down shifting keep it in the higher gear and the temps will drop drasticaly.

Best thing is to get a vented hood.

Tripoint Engineering says I should run water plus Water Wetter with no coolant in my radiator. Anyone doing this? Won't the water boil and then evaporate? I guess you can just keep adding water?

By the way it was 40 degrees Celcius on the track that day at Willow.

 

You wont get all of the coolant out of the system with out a rebuild. I have been using WW and water in all my cars for the last ten years.

Anything I need to know about maintenance? I'm assuming that I just refill with water as needed? Will it ever get hot enough to actually steam / boil out? Sorry if this is a noob question...

 

Does anyone on this forum us a radiator shroud like this to help keep airflow concentrated on the radiator?

 

Follow the WW directions.

Basic benefit is that water has a much higher specific heat than propylene glycol or ethylene glycol, so for every degree of temperature rise, pure water takes more heat out of your engine than a water/antifreeze mixture. Water also transfers heat more effectively, so for a given temperature difference between the coolant and engine, or coolant and radiator, more heat will be exchanged. Water Wetter has corrosion preventing features (like antifreeze), as well as reducing surface tension, resisting the tendency to form bubbles and boil.

The downside of a straight WW-water mixture is it doesn't smell, so if it's leaking, you won't know as soon. A friend of mine got to rebuild an engine last summer because of that. If you run maybe 10-15 percent antifreeze, you'll know by the smell if you have a leak.

I live in SoCal, so I can't speak to the safety of WW without antifreeze being run through a real winter (freezing resistance).

Oh, yeah. It was only 99 at Streets that day. That's one degree shy of officially hot. Stop crying J/K I was there, too, but not with an 8.

 

Track temp fool not air temp! Seriously though, thanks for the post...I've been doing a lot of reading the past week and have a pretty good understanding of the cooling system now...good point about the coolant being "smell-able"...it still scared me how hot it ran...no wonder turboing these cars wreaks havoc...a part of me wants to think that the 8 runs hotter than the 7...oh oh, flame city!

 

That's the first time my car ran hot. Damn it is hot there.
