RG, now why would they use a different bolt battern for the new engine? Give!!
Here are all the theories I could come up with:
Hybrid, and the electric motor generator is behind the engine needing more space.
The engine and tranny will be mounted lower, making dry sump necessary. Allowing a still lower hood. The dry sump is possible because the it is also the MOP. This means a different axis for the tranny.
They want to stop current RX-8 owners from swapping in the new engine. The villains.
I am open to more rumors...

You will see 300RWHP and less vehicles being very attractive due to gas milage.
Maybe a gas guzzling tax will induce people out of their SUV's.

300hp is what I’d call about adequate for 2007. Granted if they could make one 2,600lbs then it would be fairly good. Inside of 1-2 years you are going to have over 300hp Evos, STIs 135i, 400-500hp Camaros, Challengers and you already have over 300hp 350z and G37. This doesn’t even factor in the used market of M3s, S5s, C63s… All of which can be tweaked mid-cycle to produce more power which as we have seen with the 13B is not the case. I hope Mazda takes a long-term approach to it’s next performance cars. I’d love to see the next incarnation with optional turbo 4 or 16c rotary. Just check off which box you want MX8 or RX8 and see where the sales fall.

Give me a 280hp, 2600lb RX7/8/42/whatever you want to call it and it will thrash a 300hp 3500lb evo any day of the week. not to mention how much better the brakes will be and still retain the ability to use smaller (lighter/more compact) components, how much more tossable the car will be, how much lighter the spring rates you can use henceforth it will still retain better streetability....

Power!!
Just to be clear the article talks about the new rotary coming in 2010. The facelift for the RX8 next year does not mean Renesis2. Not sure if that's what you thought but figured I'd make sure people didn't get the wrong impression.

You are not taking into account how much quicker a car with less HP yet 800-1000 less LBS is going to be.

And since this won’t be here until say 2010 and we already have options over 300hp (135i is about 3,200lb and over 300hp even if they list it as 300 plus its modable) how will it compete in say 2015?
Keep in mind the 232 claimed hp of the RX8 for its weight was pretty good in 2003. Mazda needs to think what would be adequate or what the competition will have in way of hp/lb in say 2014 or 2015.

If Mazda is going to the trouble of a clean-sheet design, they are probably also going to leave themselves some room for future upgrades (rotor width increases?), and not paint themselves into a corner so to speak. No doubt they would have liked to upgrade the renesis, but what is there left to do, they've already wrung just about all they can out of it.

If you're lucky you'll get a 2800 lbs two-seater rotary. Even though it will be a lightweight, two seater it will still not compare to the Evo in a straight line. You just have to face it that Mazda is not concerned with this fact and are not going to build a car to be an Evo/STi/350Z killer. They are different cars made by different manufacturers with different visions.

How do you figure? You haven't seen anything yet. The RX-7 was always as fast as it's competition despite far less power. An Evo isn't all that. At well over 3000 lbs (3200 lbs???), even a 2800 lb competitor wouldn't need nearly the power level. Then consider that it probably would have comparable power and I just don't see what the issue would be. It might not win off the line but that's the real advantage of all wheel drive. It wouldn't take very long to catch up.

What about the Mazdaspeed3? Within its class - MiniCooperS, CivicSi, WRX, Sentra SpecV, etc...I'd say Mazda just ran over the competition. Still think Mazda doesn't care?
