I think the trans bolt pattern will remain the same. They seem to have increased the displacement while keeping the exterior of the housings, plates the same. Only thing changed is the decreased width of the new aluminum housings.
By doing that, they don't have to retool to mold new housings and plates. Since the coolant passages are drilled in, they could just adjust the machine to make the changes.

The coolant passages aren't drilled. They are cast.

I guess the 3 x Aluminum side housings would be surfaced (area where rotors sides mate/spin) with flat machined steel facing inserts.
A similar practice to an all alloy banger block with steel piston sleeve inserts.. this would maintain the durability factor for the 16X.

I cant belive that they claim this engine consumes less oil with 3 oil jets per rotor

That actually makes sense to me. The hottest part of the apex seal is the center. The Renesis has 2 oil injectors but they point towards the sides of the rotors. This means that more oil should be needed to get the center well lubricated. The RX-7's had 4 injectors but 2 of them were centered in the housings and 2 of them were in the primary intake port runners. Oil could mix well with incoming fuel and air and distribute over a wider area mroe easily. Since Mazda wanted to run less oil in the Renesis, I suspect the side firing created many of the issues that we see. It would seem to make sense as people have reported better mileage with premix than without. This would seem to reinforce the notion that the center of the apex seals aren't getting the lubrication they need and are therefore ever so slightly warping, creating less sealing ability. With 3 oil injectors, they can get even distribution which means they wouldn't need to use as much to get the job done.

I use premix on my RX-8 so far all comprecion checks give about the same result and my car has 190+ rwhp so the problem with oil metering is obvious
I get what you are saying, but I personally would like more oil instead of less no matter how smart or well distributed mazda's new system is, and taking into acount the larger combustion chamber and larger side seals
I just hope they get it right this time
edit: I just though of something, maybe they are using this oil jets in diferent stages, like the center one in low revs and they come on on demant, just a though

I don't see why they simply don't use all this direct injection technology to premix the gas, air, oil into a fuel slurry and slam it all home at 5000psi...

While Mazda doesn't talk about future product, the company clearly sees the light, and would like to replace the four-door, rear-seat RX-8 with a two-seat RX-7. The Taiki two-seater features the new, more powerful 16X rotary, which wasn't unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, as expected, although presumably it's hiding in plain sight under the engine shroud of the Premacy hybrid hydrogen rotary that made its debut here. The engine will help Mazda sustain its miniscule RX-8 sales figures for the next few years.

To piggyback on top of this discussion more injection ports for oil will allow you to more accurately place oil where it is needed so you actually could use less because the system is more efficient at distributing oil.
If you think about it the amount of pre-mix one would use compared to the amount of oil being directly injected is much higher per rev. 1qt=~2Kmiles vs. pre-mix 1qt every 3-4 tanks ~750-1k miles depending on the amount you put in and mileage. (And that is on top of OMP). Less oil will be better for emissions.
Pre-mix is kinda the banging rocks together approach and oil injection is more of the using tools approach. Still not perfect yet but I suspect we'll see improvements based on knowledge gained from Renesis problems.

Sad, but until I see official Mazda news reporting that the 16x will go in the 8, I won't believe it.
