I'm wondering will this open up the possibility of someday doing an engine swap? Not that it's cheaper, because it's probably more expensive, but just because I just got my car and love the look, and want the power haha.

The biggest issue will probably be integrating the direct injection fuel architecture.

If you do an engine swap, you might as well swap the computer too. I'm willing to bet that the computer that controls the 16X uses a very similar drive by wire system to the RX-8

I'm not talking about the computer. I mean the fuel architecture itself. Direct Injection fuel systems generally have fuel pressures of a couple thousand PSI as compared to only a couple dozen for standard port injection systems. You may need everything from the pump forward.

I figured that was assumed. You'd need to pull everything to make the engine run, including the fuel system. What I was speculating at is the ability to use the computer that controls the 16X in the RX-8 without major modification.

Check out the MS6 forums for information on Mazda's DI system. In the case of MS6, the aftermarket have not maxed out the stock injectors yet, but given the limited support from the aftermarket, that statement does not mean much.

But i can say that the Mazda DI injectors can handle 400FWHP without a problem. Also the high pressure fuel pump is located in the engine bay.

I know you all are hyped about this engine coming in the next rx7....For me, I want this engine in my 8. Who cares if the seven is 200lbs lighter.....we have back seats and a safe all around car. 300hp n/a in an 8 is fast enough for me.

That is also probable, although it won't have 300hp. This engine will definitely make its way into more than one car.

Look closely. There are 3 oil metering jets per housing. One central one located where the 13B oil injector is located (in between the current engine's dual) and 2 more slightly farther up the housing. If that doesn't tell you there has been a metering problem, nothing will.

RG...tell me a swap could be easily done with this new R2 engine. Do u think it will bolt up with out fabrication? Obv. the computer will be another thing but that can be taken care of. I just want to know if this badboy can bolt up without hacksawing my car.

It's hard to tell without a front view but it really looks like they tried to keep the transmission bell housing bolt pattern the same. That would mean they should bolt up but again I don't know for sure.

^^ Yes I see the 3 per rotor oil metering intakes..
Obviously they would be ECU controlled depending on RPM..
Wonder what the oil consumption would be.

That would make sense if they have been field testing these motors in the current style RX8s (which I'd imagine they have been).

Sorry guys, its the Photobox...UK!!, they have changed their policy and limited downloads, I am going over to imageshack, unless someone else who grabbed the pic wants to host or repost.

Mazda owes it to us RX8 owners to have that R2 as a swap option. -Of course thats gonna come out of our pocket. Just my 2 cents.

I think the trans bolt pattern will remain the same. They seem to have increased the displacement while keeping the exterior of the housings, plates the same. Only thing changed is the decreased width of the new aluminum housings.

By doing that, they don't have to retool to mold new housings and plates. Since the coolant passages are drilled in, they could just adjust the machine to make the changes.

Put it in two seats, mid-mounted, and sub 2400lbs.

I can't wait to hear more about this thing.
