A separate oil reservoir would help people understand and make it a little easier for most people to check the oil. Not a hassle for enthusiasts, but surely Mazda would rather sell more rather than fewer of these.

The separate tank is absolutely something the new car/s should have (For the oil metering that is). Also dry sump would have been effective in bringing the height of the motor and the out put shaft position lower. I guess too much expense.

I also noticed the illustrated motor looks like 4 port intake. I haven't figured out what's going on there.

Unless it's just a reflection of the dish, that intake port looks HUGE.

It is a 6 port and it still has the siamese exhaust center port

I see the indication of 2 ports on the outer plate but they look like the 4 port version where the upper casting is not circular and may not be functional.

if it is a 4 port engine then it probably means a lower red line than the renenesis

Mustang 3550 at least

We have to remember the RX cars are not straight line cars. Granted the competitors will have more HP and torque, that is a lot of weight to push around a track; although the 135i looks great on a road course! I am not conviced we will see another RX8. I think the 8 will be retired and we will see a two door coupe weighing in at 2700-2800 pounds. And, to some of the comments listed on another thread, it appears the design of this new engine will be more friendly for power adders. I would place my money on a 2700 pound, 350 HP RX car over a tuned Z, 135i, Maro, or Stang on the track. I would argue that the GTR's should not think they would own a RX car on the track with those numbers...
Good points. Also, I think it is important to remember that the last generation RX-7 had only 255hp compared to the Supra's 320hp. But it weighed 700-800lbs less.

Since there are already so many other cars with high hp but overweight, it is very smart of Mazda to go for the lightweight, tossable niche since they will be the only one. Plus, at 700-1000lbs less than the competition, they won't be giving up much if at all in straight line speed.

zoom44, you think they'll keep using the 13B-MSP? It isn't a bad engine at all, just that the RX-8 is too heavy for it. With the right setup and perhaps add DI to it, it'll have great mileage and horsepower.

longer stroke in a rotary= more heat to deal with?
Would sound a little different also!
Heck with those numbers expected just fi the renasis and you have that--even more--- and it can be made reliable. whats the big deal? It is good to know that the rotary is not dying--thats good.
and the DI issues fi'ing or modding will be much harder as per RG has already said.
we will have to wait and see

direct injection calls for very very high psi of the fuel, anyone know what it is (or going to be)?

The location that they have chosen for direct injection could still be used with standard fuel pressures although hitehr is always better. They still have 2 conventionally located injectors as well so I imagine we aren't really going to see it go up much if any.

So what you are saying is the top mounted injector will almost act more like an axillary injection to cool the charger once it hits the chamber?

The bigger the base the taller the towner.

If 8psi on an otherwise stock 220bhp renesis makes ~280 to the wheels, just imagine what 8psi in a base 280-300bhp 16x will yield. Now toss that in a ~26-700lb car.

If this new motor proves reliable, I wonder if it will be plausible to swap it in the current 8 body...

Lexus IS type of injection?

Maybe DI doesnt work well at high rpms in a rotary engine.

Or maybe the DI injectors are very small to promote fuel atomization at low power levels, and cannot keep up with the fuel demand at higher power levels.

Maybe, at full throttle, the port injectors are used to "dump" a lot of fuel in the chamber, with the DI injectors used to "correct" lean spots.

Just a thought.

I see heat dissipation a problem for boosted versions of this. I don't think this is designed for FI at all.

I'll have to disagree with that. there are some HUGE coolant passages on that motor.
