In fact, why bring back the RX-7 at all? It's just a name or label. Let the RX-7 be what it was (and still is). Don't look back... look ahead... just make a 2 door super sport version of the RX-8.
I think this sketch of what a new RX-7 might look like is the best yet! I love it... despite what some others have said. Except it should not be an RX-7... just an optional version of the 8. Let the RX-7 moniker go... the future is the RX-8!

RX-8 is not a feather weight at 3,053 lbs. It is 553 lbs. heavier than my Celica which also happens to be a hatchback.
Could they have made the the RX-8 a notch/hatchback? I'm sure that it is feasible but it would come with pros/cons just like the "Free Style" doors. I think that the RX-8 is full of compromises and most of them I agree with but the car would match my needs better if it was a hatchback.
. I agree that a hatchback would be more useful - ideally, I'd prefer if the RX-8 was a hatchback as well. I'd settle for fold-down seats, but those didn't happen either.It's kind of like the VW Passat - the FWD version of the sedan has a fold-down rear seat, but the 4Motion version has a fixed rear seat. The reason is that for stiffness and side impact requirements, the 4Motion version with it's independent rear suspension (vs. beam axle in the FWD) needed the extra rigidity provided by a stronger fixed rear seatback structure. With the freestyle doors, Mazda needed the rigidity of the fixed rear seatback structure in the RX-8.
If I can't have both, I'll stick with the improved stiffness and associated ride/handling improvements over the extra utility of the hatch space.

The Celica is also a flexi-flyer when compared to the stiffness of the RX-8 chassis
The structure of the RX-8 is not unlike the S2000, so I suspect a convertible RX-8 in a few years, if all goes well with this launch.
