Jeremy Clarkson still loves the car
For more clarification, I took the liberty of going over to dictionary.com and getting you guys the definition for the two.
road·ster –noun
1. an early automobile having an open body, a single seat for two or three persons, and a large trunk or a rumble seat.
coupe –noun
1. Also, coupé. a closed, two-door car shorter than a sedan of the same model.
Simply put, a roadster is a convertible, a coupe isn't. Hence the reason why it's not on the list.

That's the recent track model that doesn't come with a soft top, but it's not a coupe since that's a removable hardtop that has no structural rigidity. Note the name of your jpg file ("... top on"). Same as my Miata, from which I've removed my soft top for weight savings. I actually used to call it a roadster coupe but I was just being cheeky. It's not really a coupe. More correctly, you could call it an inconvenient hardtop convertible.

never felt the rx-8 could hold a candle to the rx-7, but this video from Top Gear is getting me thinking more and more about my next purchase coming up soon.

*technically* and in the most true and classic sense, sports cars are open top two-seaters, aka roadsters today. these would be cars like the old open top mg's, triumphs, lotus sevens and elans, the original corvette, original open top xk, ac/shelby cobra, etc. cars like miata and s2000 would be considered sports cars in this regard. anything w/ a fixed top would be considered a coupe or gt; these don't necessarily have to have 4 seats. hence, the e-type fixed head coupe, mg gt, triumph gt6, 240z, rx-7, and lots of cars considered *sports cars* today are not really sports cars at all, but coupes or gt's. we've basically bastardized the term "sports car" but who cares?
Erm.. it's a 4-door coupe IF the BMW X6 is also a coupe. It's not.
Just because manufacturers like to call them coupes doesn't necessarily mean they can rewrite the dictionary.
Our 8s are regularly listed as "2DR Coupe" on service reports, on news ads, on magazines, on some insurance quotes, etc.. can you say the same about the Merc. or the Bimmer?

Jeremy Clarkson love affair with the RX-8 is still going strong 4 years on.
He rates the RX-8 as the 3rd best car in the coupé category. Great to see the car listed in such company.
1. Aston Martin V8 Vantage
2. BMW M6
3. Mazda RX-8
4. Corvette C6
