The new tails look better than I thought they would, but it looses those neat twin gray slats that tie into the front turn signals on the current car, which I always thought was a nice design touch.

As for front end, I'm siding with the dislike camp.

The wheels are awesome though.

I like it. That's far better looking IMO. Now it really looks sporty. Give it some power and that is one damn nice setup.

Outside: Negative

It looks more like a sedan car now! way too many lines in the bumper, The lines in the car are not as smooth as before. I would pick the styling of the mazdaspeed edition package over this one. It looks like someone had a RX-8 and "modified" it.

Inside: Positve

The inside, looks alot better. Some minor upgrades but it all adds up and makes the interior alot nicer.

Engine compartment: Negative

They did nothing in there! The all difference is the strut bar, Why didnt they relocate the battery? The RX-8 is about handling, so why leave the heavy battery in that location! It should be against the firewall. The intake still looks be the same big clunky box as it was. And once again they covered everything up with plastic.

Notice.. no more front rotary accent availability..

Depending on when this comes out, I might trade mine in.. If it's too far in the future, I probably won't bother.

That's -exactly- what I thought; literally the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this pic:

was impreza (OK, maybe I'm not quite awake yet, but still, not flattering)

I think overall it's a great update. Would love to acquire those seats and driver's floor mat.

Minuses:
-The Volvo S60R speedometer surround - out of place
-Front plastic mustache - Why must they use cheap plastics on their grills and front ends (ala - MS6, CX-7, etc)?
-New steering wheel

So with out reading all the tread just yet these are my opinions, ok lets see here:
new head lights
new spliters on front facia
overall design of front facia (fogs, ducts, badge) PUSH
rear exhaust
rear taillights PUSH
side marker
Seats
Steering wheel (lookslike a mustang)
Interior (over all less luxurious looking)

Any news on performance yet besides the larger 4 point front strut bar and the 19" wheels?

Does this mean the regular RX-8 might have a slightly toned-down facelift? Or perhaps a different facelift altogether?

The facelifted Mazda RX-8 will be on show at the Detroit Auto Show (starting this Sunday) but this Friday the sportier Mazda RX-8 RS, also facelifted, will make its appearance at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Ahead of that show Mazda has released two images.

That wouldn't be cost effective.

I like the new center console/radio area. Subtle change, but the piano black now includes the ashtray, too. Kudos on the relocated dipstick with the door in the engine cover, too.

Good observation!

Hope it is an improved new transmission with a wider 6th gear and shorter 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Cheers

it looks like a 5-speed to me??

EDIT: nevermind it is a 6 speed, and the reverse is now on the other side and up, which is the same as what the NC miata has now...

Now I wonder can I change my seats out for those Recargo seats.

Cuz it seems that the Recargo seats are lighter with better support.
