Sell your At and buy an MT, easiest and cheapest option almost every time. The only way its cheaper to convert is if you were to do all the work yourself. Then you would have to ask yourself "what is my time worth" and multiply that by the time you spent on the project, its probably still cheaper to sell and buy another. :P

Just from curiosity...how much time and money (including all parts related), if you do it yourself to change an automatic transmission to a manual transmission or vice versa?

There is a thread around somewhere of someone that actually did the AT/MT conversion. Ignoring the effort needed, the cost was larger than the cost to sell an AT and buy an equivalent year/mileage MT.

What a frustrating experience that might have been for that person.
I remember helping a couple of guys many years ago do swap like this in their trucks. Man, what an ordeal with the wiring, computer issues, trying to find the right plates and mounts, etc.
At the end I came to the same conclusion: the time and money invested were not worth the effort. Way easier to sell the car/truck and get another one with the transmission you want already in it.

If you have a donor car for the ECU, wiring harnesses, transmission, etc.then the cost would be the amout you paid for the parts plus the labour to dissassemble both cars...and rebuild the MT....( so unless you do the labour yurself..... )
If you try to do it buying the parts...you might as well sell the car because the parts list would be much more than either is worth

Of course, he's in the rotary business, so I'm not sure if an ordinary enthusiast would reach the same conclusion.

The only time it makes economic sense if is there are 0 manual transmission models in comparable condition to the automatic in question for sale in the area being searched.
Now, if you know someone who just had their manual transmission car recently totaled, and they didn't have comprehensive/collision insurance coverage, and you were able to buy the whole wrecked car for cheap, then maybe it might be worth it.
Here in the US, no one really has an excuse not to just sell their automatic and buy a manual transmission car instead. There are just so many manual cars within a short drive from just about every part of the US market that are available.
