Hey WTBRoatary!: I saw you got your thermostat in the mail today. I have a question about the thermostat. I recently had my oil cooler lines replaced due to rust. In the process the dealer broke the nib on the radiator so had to get new radiator (dealer charged for part no labor). When I got it back 60 days ago, it seemed to be running hotter than usual, as in the fan was always running when I turned of the engine. I waited for cool weather and when it continued to stay hot, I took it to the dealer thinking the previous repairs may have caused it to run hot. They say I need a new thermostat and quoted $461.00. Why so high? Can't I just replace the thermostat valve and gasket and not replace the entire housing? I'd like your thoughts. Thanks. Bob

That's why I just stare at it for now until I can try plugs/coils/wires and hope the new owner didn't let it run to long/overheat with the previous

I hope I don't need a rebuild I'm sure it needs a cat/mid pipe because both occasions I saw it start up white smoke bellowed out the pipes

Previous owner sold it "as is" car is haggard but was cheap...

I live in southern Alberta (Canada)
So I am open to suggestions on pre mix ratio... You know really, I'm open to just hearing everyones suggestions on routine rituals and maintenance :D because this is a place for people who love the RX-8

lots of white smoke could be a bad coolant seal. was it sweet smelling? get the cooling system checked out. as for pre mix 1oz/gallon

Took my daily driver to the dealer for service this morning. They said they'd need it all day (damn no appointment, how am I supposed to know when its going to break?!) No big deal, I took the courtesy shuttle home so I could take the RX-8 to work.

But sometimes things just aren't that easy... I went to start up the 8, nothing, nada, zilch. No lights, battery must be dead. I haven't driven it in two months, but I had it hooked up to a trickle charger... dafu? Borrowed the wife's car, took the battery to O'Reilly, they threw it on the battery tester... dead as a doornail. Only 18 months old, that is officially the shortest a battery has ever lasted me.

But in the end I had a blast driving it to work. The morning's shenanigans took so long the morning rush hour had already ended. No traffic FTW.

Mounted the spoiler to my brand new seibon trunk and it looks great (only non-OEM mazdaspeed thing on the whole car btw) and finally started on some of the interior wiring and removed the dash just to get it out of the way. So far only one door is re-wired with S2 wiring, now just have to do the rest of the car and i'll be good lol

Was about 58F outside and couldn't let that go to waste, Took the 8 out for a spin, beat it up a good amount :p
Can't wait for it to be spring/summer so i can actually drive in the beautiful weather and go on road trips and such. Plan on overhauling the brakes this summer and have the OEM wheels refinished, balanced and mounted up! Oh and get rid of the semi-peeled plasti-dip.

Wink Pettit Racing aluminum coolant tank

I finally installed the Pettit Racing A-Spec aluminum coolant tank with expansion tank and level sensor. I used the Epitroch 'Evil M' mounting plate.

Thumbs up

Hi.

One question about the coolant reservoir. Does it interfere with stock radiator and parts ?

You seem to have a vast array of parts. What do you have suspension wise ?

Thx.

Slip sliding away!

While it wasn't "today" but the first snow of the year here in NJ, I took it out and had a blast! It was about 1 inch of snow on the roads with freezing rain coming down. There was not much risk of getting stuck and enough grip to control the slides! found an empty parking lot and spent 10 minutes getting dizzy! Not sure if anyone else experiences this but the electronics do not like these antics, I got a check engine light that cleared within the day.

It is an exact fitting OEM replacement. No modification necessary.

I sure hope that the Pettit Al tank is properly welded with the same materials. Nothing like a small difference in metallurgy between the weld and tank materials mixed in contact with an electrolytic solution (coolant) to start oxidizing everything on the car that coolant comes into contact.

Was driving today.... took a right turn... Steering wheel locked and i had to muscle it back before i crashed... I got lucky! Checked the connectors, all good! What could have caused this? Is the car suicidal?! Definitely felt like i Effed up the steering rack... but its working perfectly fine... FOR NOW.

You know wheel locks upon power loss, electrical.

Check your ignition for shorts. Check your battery for full power condition. Check your fuel injection.

A hard manuever could cause any of this systems to stress, and if not in top shape, engine death could cause your power steering to die.

Even if momentarily, enough to send you over to trouble.

Also check your power steering, might be a pump failure.

The power steering is electrical in the RX8. No pump....so it isn't that.

The usual failure is lack of contact in the CAN bus wiring harness for the steering connections. It can cause a momentary loss of steering. ..but usually would require the car to be shut off before it will come back.

Read all the steering threads and clean up the connections first....and follow the DIY if you need some help. If that doesn't fix it there could be other issues....but start there first

Need help with ecu

As I tried to smog my car, I was told it cannot be smogged as I need a new ecu to do so. I thought it was just bullshit, but my mechanic agreed. Any recommendations on what to buy?

What's up...there has to be a lot more to this story. Give us some info. So far the ECU thing makes no sense unless you have an aftermarket one...or ?????

The Pettit Racing aluminum coolant tank is manufactured by Moroso here in the US. I'm sure they know what type of welding wire to use to prevent corrosion.

There is an obscure possibility, I'm only aware of it happening to myself and one other car.

It's possible that there's a broken bolt on your AC Refrigerant pump, the bolts line up perfectly with the lower knuckle on the steering column so that a broken one can slide out and lock the knuckle. It's a super stealth failure because when it's not bound to the knuckle it can slide back into the hole (they're too long to actually fall out).

Just to be safe give those 4 bolts a tug and see.
