My first one went after less than a year (I was commuting far back then) at 22,000 miles. Second engine lasted 74,000 miles. Third one is at 20k but it has been catless, BHR kitted, premixed, and Sohned (sic) since day one.

I figure any S2 that fails under 100k would be considered a failure for the updates on the S2 and if they get a consist mileage greater then 150k the updates could be consider a success.

I'm approaching 4k miles on mine pretty soon. (whoops, the thread title asked for '09 series II, but I still assume it's ok for me to post my info since I'm still a series II)

I've done one oil change @ 3k miles (dealer / 5w20), and I plan on keeping that up every 3k miles as well. I've been topping off every 2-3 fuel ups.

I've gone through this entire thread and i live in San antonio where the weather's generally hot. I'm about to buy an rx-8, but i have no clue on how to assess how often i need to top off my oil. Everyone in here seems to have a different preference and that's understandable due to different locations/climate/environment, but can someone give me a good rule of thumb in a numerical value? (i understand every 2-3 fill ups), and how do you check the oil level. Is that done inside of a car's tachometer or with the dipstick? Is it best to top off on a cold engine or warm engine?

When I first got the car I looked every 3-4 days just to get an idea of how fast it used oil. Now I check it every 2 weeks and could get away with every 3 weeks easy. And depending on how hard I've been on the car will determine how much oil it needs.

How do you check the oil? Um, I don't want to be a jerk here, but I'm not so sure you need and RX-8 at this point. It's a car that takes a little more "work" then most modern cars. And if you don't know how to check oil then I'm not so sure it's the car for you.

If you want to know how you use the dipstick under the hood. On the 09's up you don't even need to remove the engine cover to do this.

It's in your quick guide to your car and manual. There's a gauge in how much to add on the dipstick i believe.

Wow and I thought the 9800 miles I have on my 09 R3 was high considering I've only had it for 14 mos.

35,000 Miles!

I bought my 09 R3 in Feb of 2009 and this week I clicked over 35,000 miles.
No problems other than the weird MIAC bussing rattling thing at high rpms, which was fixed under warranty.

Lucky.. I've been arguing with them over that thing for months now. They keep saying I'm not supposed to take the engine anywhere near those RPMs and thus they won't cover it.

Where in the manual does it say not to redline? Funny how they advertise that to sell the car though. Go to a different dealer and don't say **** about redlining.

OK

just hit 40,000. the dealer in Oklahoma City gave me the same BS that i wasn't to go that high with the RPM, that was over the transmission grinding on my 05. funny that all that went away when i was ready to by my 09.

Well, the big problem I keep running into is they keep calling the regional mazda rep whenever I bring mine in, and that guy is the biggest douchebag ever and is always a complete dick to me, always insinuating I can't drive properly, I treat the car badly, etc etc.

I would ask to speak to the supervisor. Driving to redline is not abuse. Besides the factory tach is about 500RPM off at redline anyway so you are not really redlining it technically. besides, that is the the PCM has a fuel cut, so no damage will occur.
