Law of Diminishing Returns.

The law of diminishing returns would imply that you are paying a lot more money for a small return.

However, the 370Z will cost roughly the same amount as an RX-8 and one second is a large time difference when we are talking about 6 seconds.

Therefore the law of diminishing returns would not apply in this case.

He responds,

KnightRT starts in, “How’s it ride?”

Like a GT car, frankly. Not hard enough. All sports cars you ride like a Mazda RX-8. Hell, they should be so lucky.

Does anyone know what this is supposed to mean? I can't understand what he is trying to say. How are you supposed to ride a Mazda RX-8, from the standpoint of the reviewer?

Comparing a mustang and to a Z is like comparing Versace (mustang) and DKNY (Z)

What?

he means:

if all sports cars drove like the rx8, we would all be so lucky.

i wish my rx8 accelerated to 60mph in 5.1 seconds. but dont the 270whp+ (320hp?) turbo rx8s accelerate to 60 in the 4s?

That is value. That is why people will buy it. And I know very well what a 5.1 second 0-60 looks and feels like compared to a 6.1. Huge difference.

No, I don't think they do. A 320 crank hp RX8 accelerates in the low 5 second range for 0-60. Comparing a torquey 3.7L V6 to a turbo rotary by peak hp alone doesn't tell a fraction of the story when you're looking at 0-60 or quarter mile.

I'll quote the Car and Driver Protech RX8 article, one more time... Anybody know of any other published numbers for a turbo RX8??? Please post it.
However, getting the wide rear Toyos (275/30-19s versus the stock Bridgestone 225/45-18s) to hook up for a standing-start launch is definitely tricky. Dancing a fine line between keeping boost up and wheelspin down, we blasted to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.5 at 109 mph, an improvement of a full second over the stock version in both cases. (These numbers suggest more like 375 horses were present on test day, but we probably gave up some time during the touchy launch.)

I know the Z v 8 thing is old, but felt compelled to post this b/c the Z should be a lot faster than the 8.

However, it does seem Nissan dramatically improved the build quality of the Z and that it handles better than the outgoing one.

I was never a Z hater, but have to concede Nissan did turn the 350 into a Japanese Camaro.

The RX8 vs 350z debate was heated, and rightfully so. Many comparisons could be made, and each car won several categories.

Now, the 370z has stepped up its game, and comparing it to the RX8 R3 in measurable contests is basically pointless. 0-60 in 4.9 and skidpad of .97g. That's the problem. I bet you won't see any "370z vs RX8 R3" articles in the media, because I think the 370z is sneaking its way into the current Cayman S/BMW M coupe territory with a stronger engine and better handling/braking at a competive price.

I think Nissan is looking over its shoulder to see what Mazda will come up with, but right now, Nissan is the one trying to push the envelope in the $30-40K sports car market. We'll see if they can execute.

even if it outperforms the cayman s/bmw m territory... nissan just doesnt have the class to compete with them individually. imo.

lets say the 370z was "faster" on paper in every regard to a cayman s. i'd still buy the cayman s.

I agree with you about buying the caymen S, but I think classes are determined by the media by relative performance in acceleration, skidpad, slalom and braking. You're a "pure" enthusiast that doesn't live and breath magazine articles, so you don't count. Sports car sales in the $30-50K bracket are dominated by the magazine reading douche bag fanbois.

That's why the 0-60 number that the OP finds underwhelming is of great significance. The difference between a 5 second and 6 second car in the way the media classifies them is huge. The media plays off the douche bag "grudge match" rivalry tedencies, and more press absolutely means more sales. The R3 is not getting much press. If it were a 5 second 0-60 car fiercely battling the 370Z, the amount of press it would receive would be massive, and I think sales would be way up.

The R3 isn't getting much press because it really isn't a 'new' model. How much press did the 350Z/G35 get when they bumped the engine output a bit for the refresh?

370Z is out of our league. I accepted that and moved on already.

It is what it is.

I guess that is why I wouldn't even consider looking at a Evo or WRX/STI yet people insist that those econ-box based sedans are sports cars to be considered in the same league as a Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4, RX-8 or even a S2000.

Or much like the 370z which is fine for what it is, but hardly something I would even consider based on its family luxury sedan/SUV underpinnings and generally poor fit and finish of the past 350z.

you mean the 370z? Is that the impression you got after you test driving it?

I'm not saying I'd run out and buy one the second it comes out, but it is a good car. It performs better than ours which makes it hard to bash if it's going to be the new competing car. 1 second is 1 second. If it's the same price range and a competitive car, then why does it matter what it took to get there? 1 second isnt a small margin either... it's running low 13's in the 1/4 mile, we're lucky to see low 14's. 1 second is a fair amount if you ask me.

I'm sorry but 370Z is likely to destroy RX-8 in pretty much every category in performance. You might wanna argue in terms of look or fun factor since those are subjective.

Oh, I forgot to mention that RX-8 is more practical though.

The 16X will change all of this friends.

The 370z is butt ugly even with 200 horsepower more I still wouldn't buy it.

I think they are going to have to make a tough choice, either go through with the 16x Rx-8 style car or a "new" FD, seeing the success that the Rx-8 has enjoyed I think it will be a new Rx-8 which is kinda sad. I love our 8 but wouldn't trade my FD for anything in the world (not literally).
