Coasting on neutral saves gas??? Haha, that's a good one.

Some wacky ideas for saving gas with dubious results

Using neutral while coasting downhill:

This urban legend is a popular gas saver myth for foothill dwellers and weekend ski trippers. Not only is this ineffective at saving gas, but it is extremely dangerous. There's no reason to cut-off your acceleration control - coasting with your foot off the gas uses the same amount of fuel. And, letting your vehicle drift downhill can generate triple-digit speeds - one reason why coasting downhill in neutral is illegal in many areas. And if you're thinking of the next crazy step - turning off your engine to coast downhill - the cops should cut-up your license.

Does Mazda sponsor this forum? If so I am sure they read our complaints.

Bad MPG is an selling issue, and a resale issue. Looks like 8's suck in that department.

I'm glad the mileage is so bad - It means fewer people will buy it which in turn means our cars stay unique & much admired .

The 8 is worst than the 1988, 7 turbo.

20 years to make things worse, thanks Mazda.

Sad, people have to buy a Yugo to get respectable gas mileage.

No, it means thousands of us who bought it not knowing how abysmally inefficient it was are now trying to sell our cars to people who know better than to buy it. If you think your car is much admired, try to sell it. You'll see what kind of "admiration" exists.

Thats my whole point - people always admire the car & ask me about it . They really want one but would not get it due to the gas mileage . So it stays unique !

I don't like the mileage but really enjoy having a unique car . Don't care if I lose money selling it what's a few $ when you get so much enjoyment from the car.

You keep insisting that it is, but according to road test records I found on the web, it isn't. I don't think you've ever owned any rotary.

Uh, sparky, for one, Mazda does not "sponsor" this forum. Secondly, the car has entered it's third model year, and I think they are well aware - along with anyone who has spent 5 minutes here- what the mileage is. That didn't stop me from getting my new 8 six weeks ago.

Lastly, for those who can't hit 18 miles per gallon no matter what - I'll repeat: there is one of two things wrong

1) The car
2) the driver

I bought my 8 two weeks ago, and at the same time I bought my wife a brand new '06 Ford Explorer. Needless to say, she gets better gas milage than me. She doesn't have NEAR as much fun driving as I do, though . I got the 8 because it was fun to drive, not because I was concerned with my milage.
