If not covered under warrenty....how much would an engine replacement be from mazda? from a rotary shop?

Hey all, I have an '04 with around 58K on it and its been acting a little funky lately. The power seems to be lower than it was about 6 months ago and there is also a strange rattling noise when I start accelerating (not a heat shield or anything like that, I checked). The gas mileage is also really bad (around 12, 13 maybe 14 if I'm really luck and drive like my grandma). Does anyone know if these are signs on the engine going, I also just recently did the oil as well as changed the plugs and coils.

possible. Bring it to the dealer and complain of lack of power, poor gas mileage (poorer than normal) and hard starting.

They should check the engine vacuum and let you know if your engine is okay. Ask ahead of time what the min. spec. is and that they need to provide you a report that includes the RPM they tested at.

Just wanted to say I'm very impressed with how Mazda is still honoring the warranty. I bought a 2004 RX-8 about 3 months ago with 67k on it, put about 3k miles on it, and when I went into the dealer he immediately told me I needed a new engine. After compression tests he told me I don't have nearly the compression that I should, and after decarbing, still no luck. They sent in the information along with the oil change receipt from the day I bought it, and his report of me just recently putting on a new oil filter when I did my last oil change.

A few days later Mazda approved my warranty and my new engine is being shipped! I'm really impressed as I was certain I would get denied due to lack of maintenance records, but somehow some way this is not the case! Also needed a new clutch, and due to the obvious details of the procedure, I will be getting the clutch put in for the mere price of the clutch. I'm very impressed with the way my local dealership handled things so far, as I've heard horror stories and had poor experiences myself with their sales department.

I will report on the rest of the experience post-installation and post break-in. Also, I never was able to find a good post about tried and true break-in guidelines beyond Mazda's few pointers and recommendations. Any links?

So i noticed oil leaking from my car and i towed it to the dealership. i got it checked out and they said my engine is blown.. and they told me that Mazda denied my warranty claim on the basis of OIL STARVATION to my engine... I get all my services and oilchanges done.. and i didnt evn notice the oil light on until the day of. What do i do? ive called customer service many times to let them know that there was no oil because it leaked not because i starved it?

Where was it leaking from? That is the critical part.


On one hand, they certainly do not warranty the engine to run without oil, so the issue will be if it leaked the oil due to a covered part. For example, if the block cracked and leaked the oil there, you are probably covered, though it will be a fight. If it leaked from one of the oil cooler hoses (they corrode easily in northern climates, to the point of leaking), then if you are outside of bumper to bumper warranty, they probably won't cover it, since they won't have covered the part which caused the failure.

You still should have gotten an oil warning light well before it was starved enough to blow the engine, although you are already risking problems at that point.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with RIWWP. The only place I can think of them covering the engine is if it leaked out from between the housings meaning that the engine had failed causing the oil leak. If it leaked from the front or rear main seal, pan seal, that sort of thing, then I think you would be out of luck depending on mileage. This assumes that you are trying to get coverage from the extended warranty. The 8 yr/ 100,000 mile warranty is for engine internals failure. The standard powertrain warranty should cover a seal failure.

i went approximately 634 miles from my last oil change at the dealership before it just shutoff on the freeway one day. I got my friend to buy me some oil and i jsut dumped some in (yes i know thats really bad) but it did the trick and started , i drove like 25 miles home and got it towed from there. I think that 25 miles is what screwed my engine though..

It depends how much oil you dumped in. If it wasn't five quarts up to the line, then yeah, it was probably the 25 miles that did in your engine, and Mazda may have a point. I've had this happen in a 1967 Alfa Romeo when I had a rear main seal replaced, and the replacement was faulty. I drove about thirty miles checked the oil because it was running a little rough, and found it four quarts low on a 7 quart pan. I filled it to the line and hopped from Gas station to gas station buying all the 10/40 they had until I got home. Must have dumped twelve qts of oil on the road before I got back. Sorry about your engine. Best of luck.

Hey quick question. I just got my rx8 used, it has 57k miles and is a 06. Now since I bought it used do I not get this warranty? Is there anyway I can get it? Thanks

The warranty is transferrable with the car unless it had a voided warranty from Mazda North America (pretty unusual). You can call Mazda and ask them to run the VIN to make sure that your car is still covered. The number that I have for them is (800) 222-5500. Assuming that you are in the US. If that number doesn't work then you can go to a dealer and ask them to run the VIN for you and confirm the warranty. Enjoy the car.

I wonder if I can get this. My RX-8 is a 2004 US spec with 56k and was shipped to the UK by another military member and I purchased it from him. I wonder if the Mazda dealer in the UK would honor this.

My guess is no. The warranty extension is for Mazda North America. If you really want to know, I would call the Mazda North America number that I posted above and ask them, but the original warranty extension came from Mazda North America and not Mazda in the UK. That's a different company. That's my guess anyhow.

I'm thinking of purchasing a used 2008 RX-8 40th anniversary edition with ~12,000 miles for $20,990. You guys are the experts - should I buy it?

Also, I see that there is an warranty extension on the rotary engine - should that extension have been a recall? It appears that there WILL be some problems?

Sissy, yes... you should purchase the car if you like the looks and feel of the car. It's the best car I've ever owned.

Now, with that said, I'm at 99,000. Mazda replaced my engine for the second time at 98,000. This time was a lot harder to get them to do it but they finally did. I had to be persistent and patient. Records of service were imperative. I had all of my records and compiled them in a database. I supplied the service center with an 8 page print-out of all the work done to my car which showed oil changes at 3,000 mi. intervals approx. Most of the oil changes were done by me but since I had proof of purchase of oil filters, it was accepted.

I still love my 05 and plan to keep it till I'm too old to drive. Thanks Mazda for the warranty extension.

Personally I would recommend stepping up to an '09 if you're going to spring to get an '08. There were significant upgrades to the lubrication system on the '09s and above. I don't think you will have the same problems as folks with the series I.

So I had been waiting over a month for them to order the gasket kit they forgot to order and finally get it in. The service manager at this location is just spaced out and the parts department got moved to a sister store in its entirety...

So my engine has been sitting around for a month waiting, all lonely like! I finally got my baby dropped off so it can be put in along with the new clutch I bought. Hope the mechanic is as good with these as he thinks he is, because the place he works at sucks lol. Break in period here I come!

Hopefully it doesn't become the break down period... she's been plenty reliable even though she wasn't gettin much compression anymore!

That's still good to have you probably have the bumper to bumper warranty extension. So your transmission, diff, electronics should all still be covered under that. This is just for the engine core - they give out remanufactured engines (just as good or better as Japan built).

I'm about 2000 into my 3rd engine. The first replacement only lasted about 40K. It was a crated (new) engine. I thought I was lucky but I don't think it was ever as good as the first engine. The one I have in it now is a reman and it is by far the strongest engine I've had yet.

I'm in the process of having my third engine installed as well. How many total miles do you have on your car? I have around 70K on mine. It makes me kind of nervous, because I service the car regularly and do not dog it. I have other cars and I don't drive it much, so I can't explain why the engine gave out. I wish you the best with your new engine.
