Look at all my Mods and I just had my 1-5 synchros replaced, gear 1-3 and forks 1-3. All Under warranty, mods don't void your warranty unless you cave and listen to the dealer.

I'd say keep it because there are still parts that are covered even if you go FI, such as starter, water pump and other things. Remember they have top prove the FI unit caused the failure. It's not up to your dealer to void or accept warranty work it's up to the regional service rep. Though the dealer can make life easier or harder for you. In my case they made it easier, but I did have to do a little bit of arguing. Also if you ever do go FI you can always take the car back to stock form before going to the dealer for any major warranty work (time consuming). That just means you need to do regular maintenance checks like oil changes at another place so they don't find out about the FI unit.

Hell atleast you guys got something extra from Mazda for your RX-8's. Us 3rd gen guys got a raw reach around and had the car pulled from our shores...and according to most uneducated opinions it was due entirely to the fragile twin turboed engine and nothing to do with sloppy dealership work (ie map sensor line pops off, dealer claims engine failure and does a replacement). But then again, the 8 seems to have as many engine replacement problems as the 3rd gen, go figure but aleast we have a 8 year 100k now for my 8 as well.

And even harder with the new version starter! Yellow top is 44 pounds though, vs. stock battery 22 pounds...

and to the other guys, read my earlier post, don't bother watching the DVD unless you want to feel somewhat insulted.

I just passed 70,000 miles, and this is really great peace of mind. Good on mazda, because that engine rebuild thing was starting to wear on my driving.

Time to go flog it!

I understand that, but when I looked at the dealership service departments computer screen, that's what it showed up as. Just stating what I saw.

And I got my letter and DVD today. And yup, just like everyone is saying, this is just like the first DVD I had with my first 8.

Here's an idea for a little test: ask someone who knows nothing about RX-8s to spend an hour reading about the car on this forum. Then ask them to guess roughly what percentage of cars require engine replacements. What do you think they'd answer? 40%? 65%? 85%?? My point is, the severity of the problem as depicted here is far greater than it is in reality. How do I know? Use your head. If, for argument's sake, half of all RX-8 engines were being replaced, that would be news, and you'd read about it - or hear about it - in any number of magazines, newspapers and news reports.

Beyond their annual reliability survey, Consumer Reports, for one, regularly sniffs around to learn about significant reliability problems that affect a large percentage of any particular car. And when that happens, they report it. Not only has that not happened, they just placed the 8 on their list of Recommended Cars which, by definition, must not only be cars they like, but also must have average or better reliability.

All I'm saying is a major engine design flaw of such monumental proportions (as this forum loves having people believe) would be something called... news. And yet, for some reason, it isn't.

Ask yourself why.
Ny, I got called out on this qoute in another thread. What date is your issue?

And Shaofb, consumer reports did have an issue with the '04, the RX8 has gone up and down since day one. They just recently gave it an 1/2 red dot. The '04 has a nice big black dot.

I got a short leg and a long leg---great dogs Mans best friend.
The engine is a major component in the car. If you have to replace 2K(fictitious figure) of them, to me that is significant.
Dont get me wrong --i love the rotary engine--will keep mine for sure. But, I am not aware of another model of car or truck that has had to replace entire engines like this. Engine components---yes. Entire engine--no. Mazda did step up to the problem.
It is just growing pains. To back some of us had to be a beta tester

8 years 160,000 km for ALL Rx8 regardless of current warranty.

So as long as you own an RX8 with less then 160,000 km's you're covered.

If you own a 2004, the car is covered until 2012 or 160,000kms.

Might be worth it to swap in an old blown motor for some

I suspect the component vs. full engine swap is more a function of inept/untrained service departments that don't have enough understanding or skill to fix the components that cause the problems in the first place.
