alternator is the only mechanical issue i've had in 60K. i havent paid attention, but i dont know what would be a nuace about it. old on comes out, new one goes in. plenty easy to do.

a mechanical failure of the alternator won't damage much. you're car will stall out because there will be no power/current to keep the the car running.
an electrical failure of the alternator is different and the mishaps of too much current, and power and ground interacting can do some damage.

So, I have a symptom of a failing alt? I surely do not need a failure right about now. Resolving the noise issue currently, it is either the water pump or the alt. Now that I threw those two codes, maybe I need to buy that upgraded alt

keep a close eye on your battery voltage, via the AP.
if it starts dropping, not good. idle voltage should be in the 14s on stock pulleys. jedi had a mishap with that CEL a few years ago and as well as a clicking noise. though his alternator failed completely that same night.
as for the noise, try taking off the belt and turning the alternator and water pump by hand. probably won't get much kinetic spin on the water pump, but should be decent on the alternator to let you know if the noise is coming from it.

yeah, that was NOT a fun night. https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=162635
No cels so far after the reset.
I tightened the main wire nut, got in an monitored the volts with the AP. Had good readings on my commute to work. So, maybe I just had a fluke? Throwing a cel is not something to just wish would go away. There was a reason it threw those. Why the P2004? Getting to that APV motor sucks.
should have the new water pump shortly. Then it is finish the gauges, and play around once again with the exhaust... lolz Finally, I will hook up with dannobre up North at Carb Conn in January for a dynojet dyno with some changes in place.

An alternator is the only major item i have fail (if you don't count motor mount and coils).
Got a dash light that looks a battery. The Optima got me to the dealer but coughed up blood after that. I got a new battery on exchange.
I don't recall what the code was.
