Just to set the record straight on the MZR L3 Engines used in the 2009 on-wards Engines for ALL MX-5, MS3, 2011 Mazda 5 and 2.5 Mazda 6 Manuals use Steel Crankshafts and Steel Conrods, The Auto's use cast iron Conrod and Crankshafts like the pre manual 2009 L3's.
From Mazda...
A five axle-hole, 4 counterweight steel crankshafts have been adopted. (MT)
A steel connecting rod with high rigidity has been adopted. (MT)
A five axle-hole, 4 counterweight cast iron crankshafts have been adopted. (AT)
A structural sintered alloy connecting rod to improve rigidity has been adopted. (AT)

This was just a discussion thread. There are no known swaps for this underway.
The only member that was actually headed that direction has since been banned from the forum.
So there isn't anything to "update".

I can't say much about the K-Swap..... but swapping in a 13B-REW is starting to become easier and more common in the past few years now that more and more people have done it.
The availability of better aftermarket ECU products have also contributed to this... For example an Adaptroic modular ECU will essentially allow to you to control any engine you can think of and still control all of the the stock Rx8 functions (power steering, cruise, AC, T/C, etc). The most undocumented part of swapping in something other than an REW will be just figuring out layout and fitment IMO as they don't have subframe kits like the for the REW swap where the engine essentially drops in.

The Adaptronic is a great asset for a rotary swap except for the OBD2 issue here in the states.
Have to believe there must be some way to do something on the CAN to mimic all the tests in compliance. One issue is that nobody can just put it for sale as an off-road only deal because the Feds came down on that with some really big fines and criminal complaints. Which is one reason that Adaptronic doesn’t want to touch it.
