Power steering issue

Hi, I have been on the forum for a while as a guest and this site has really helped me with a few DIY's. Now the power steering is out on my car and i've tried cleaning the plugs and I took it to a dealer too. They told me that I needed a new power steering module. Is this really the case? Thanks for any help.

Probably not the case. Try searching here for the diy on power steering connection cleaning. The stock coolant overflow is positioned so that it can dump coolant directly onto the power steering harness (since we have EPS) and has been known to cause problems.

Not sure, but if all fuses are good, and all connectors are clean, that may be the case. Not sure if there is a test case where you can check power, but I would start looking here for some basic diagnostics. I do not have much more.

Have you tested anything? The power steering noise filter (located under the ECU) has been known to cause EPS failure.

How did you install it? It isn't something that you can just swap out with a new one..it needs to be calibrated so the CAN system recognizes it

I followed this: http://www.rotaryheads.com/PDF/RX8/8Steering.PDF
I did the "set the EPS system to the neutral position"

The module needs to be programmed....it has to "talk" to the ECU over the CAN bus to work

You likely will need to take it to the dealer......

Ok will do. Just curious as to why it would work even when not programmed. I just went to pick up a friend and I got it back. We will see what happens when I go to work

So I got it checked and the problem is the wiring harness for the power steering and the dealer wants $1000 just for the part.

That's funny cause that part was about $100 last time I checked....unless they are replacing the power side as well....

Fix it yourself...or get someone that can solder/crimp and heatshrink a couple of wires
