Also, you don't need to "lock" it open.
The valve only closes when 10psi of vacuum is applied to the actuator.
Simply disconnecting the hose somewhere between the actuator and the solenoid is good enough (since vacuum is always kept in the line with a vacuum chamber and one-way valve).
But feel free to read-up on it if you want.

 

Wait did I miss something? Removing baffles in the airbox increases throttle response? Like how much? If it's a decent amout then I am going to do this.

Brian - it is night and day. I highly recommend doing it ASAP. For the two screws that you remove it was well worth the mod. I did not have to reset my ECU like the DIY said. I did not remove the screens like the DIY had suggested so maybe that is why the tone didn't change or require the ECU reset.

Jon - I don't remember where I read it. I am going to read around and I might end up doing it when I get back from Indy. Went out this morning and thought that last night might have been just something mental with the response. NEWP! Car went from a blast to drive to being perfect. w00t w00t

And it sounds like you are happy with the mod so I won't say anything.

As far as the VFAD goes, if you disconnect the vacuum line from the VFAD and find out that you "lost low end torque", you can simply reconnect it.

 

Jon - That requires me to know where said vacuum line is. :P Car is off getting detailed now but I'll play with it later.

 

If you had your airbox out, you probably saw it laying on top of the undertray

i did that DIY last fall. seemed to work just as explained. I didn't remove the screens though. not so sure i'd want to. i thinkt he DIY recommends one but not both. dont remember and dont care enough to look it up. mine are still in place though. If you're going to do the DIY, i recommend also dropping in a new K&N filter and dump the pos oem one that is in there right now.

 

Simple answer, yeah. That would be the line going to the VFAD

One sec.... Here are pic of VFAD. You'd have to remove your bumper to see it, or take out your airbox stick your head in the hole and look towards the front of your car.


also, there is a nipple that you cap off behind the throttle body. Remember the one Ryan's car that I found that didn't have the cap on it at Nelsons Ledges, causing him a vacuum leak? That is what you cap off. Or you could just cut the line and cap it, but it is easier just to remove it and cap it after the throttle body.

 

Ya know the VFAD vacuum line is the one I didn't 'plug' after I changed out my intake. There should be a pic in this thread where it needs to be plugged against the throttle body. There is a line from the throttle body (if you're standing in front of your car looking at the engine it comes out under the right side of the throttle body). That rubber line goes under/over the intake duct and into the intake itself.

That's the VFAD vacuum line. I'll see if I can find a pic of the cap I have where my VFAD used to be.

The dashed line that ends in the throttle body is your VFAD vacuum line.

 

Jon said you just had to disconnect the VFAD vacuum line to have it stay open. No capping...just unplugging. Which is why i think it is that little one that I kept moving around last night. When I get my car back this afternoon I will snap a picture of it and post it to make sure Im doing the right hose.

 

You need to cap it or you will have a vacuum leak which will throw a CEL and potentially cause your car to have worse performance then with the VFAD.

 

Speaking of AutoX I think I'm out from Eastlake this Sunday. Too much to do and it's 50/50 it'll rain. Plus I'm still (slowly) leaking coolant which is generally not advisable in autocrossing.

 

See...no capping. I assume that this means I have to get the hose between the vacuum valve thingy and the green vfad electrical connection. Yes?
