I always find that posts like this say much more about the poster than about either car. These are two fine cars. Nobody with a brain could deny that about either car. They are quite different animals, however, with quite different actual price tags. A post like this one seems to assume that the choice of car is a win-lose matter, which is simply a rather juvenile viewpoint. Which car one buys, if one is intelligent about the process, is a function of many things, like preferences, needs, and size of wallet.

I'm curious what this genius would say if he saw the results from Topeka? The rather overwhelming success of the RX-8 in B Stock, I assume, would be merely subjective, whereas the rather underwhelming success of the STi in Topeka would be fact. Well, he would be half right. :D

They would say the only real form of racing is a quarter mile. <-- is one rolls eyes enough?

STI = $33k
My Base 8 (Brand New) = $24k

Not in the same class. You'd be better comparing the WRX to the 8 and not the STI.

That is all.

yep, too many people are in the mind set of "i like car X so every other car besides car X is worthless."

i mean seriously, the STi rocks. I love the car. oh, i razz my friend that owns it all the time about how ugly it is and he'll make fun of how ugly it is himself, but both of us know he didn't buy it for looks. hell, his young son walked by a toyota corolla and was like "hey daddy! look it's our fast car!" while my friend was standing there shocked, his soon peeked inside and said "hey even the inside looks like our car!" haha.

but i mean it doesn't really matter since he bought it for performance and it more than makes up for any deficiency in looks. and some people like the way it looks too. just because you like the power of the STi doesn't mean you can't like the way the RX-8 feels to drive. Just because you like the looks of the RX-8 doesn't mean you can't enjoy the pure performance of the STi.

is it me or all mazda services dealership suck that can't do anything right.... they can't even change the dam oil without putting to much oil in it and you no when you drop it of you have a feeling that some young *** serv.
2 out of the 3 times i took my car in for an oil change this was true. the second time i even mentioned it to them. the third time i mentioned it VERY clearly that i didn't want them to over fill and they didn't this time.

Yeah, the irony of my post above is that, for my taste, I would buy an STi in a second over the RX-8, even though I kind of like the RX-8's looks, and I really dislike the STi. Ever since my instructor took me for a ride on a drenched track (running water, literally record rainfall) in his STi, I've been sold on the car. Damn things stick like glue to a very wet track, and the power was unreal (ok, so it was modded, but it was easy to do). But that's just my taste. My wife has no interest in performance driving (either track or autocross), and she vastly prefers the RX-8. So that's what she bought.

Great cars both, and we're all lucky to have such a wonderful array of choices these days. So let's not knock someone else's car just because it's not our car. Ok?

Except we can all agree to knock Neons, because even an SRT4 is still a Neon. :D

j/k

I agree.

A FI RX8 I think would be very very comparable in power to an STi. Some may like to say that if you take the $$$ you put into FI and RX8, into an STi than the STi of course would be faster yet again.

But I say, if you want to compare $ for $, take that $9K difference and put it into the RX8 and see what you get.

Not knocking the STi though, I for one went from a 02 2.5RS to my RX8. I did look at the STi, very very hard in fact. But to me, the interior was pretty much the same as my RS. And for a $33K car, it didnt sell me.

I think the RX8 is very nice looking, and very comfortable.

I got a Co-worker with an STi, I cant wait to get one of the FI kits out there so we can take it to the track and see whats up =)

Just like to add, I miss my AWD.

I went to a "Taste of Subaru" event at PIR, and got to drive my RS on the track, and on a wet course. So much fun.

I really gotta get my RX8 on the track =)

It's not as far as you make it sound. You stated the MSRP of the STI, and what you paid for a brand new base model RX8. Msrp for base 6 speed is $26875. Msrp for an STI is $32,995. MSRP for WRX $24995. You can get great deals on the STI as well. I paid $29,000 for mine. Most people who buy an RX8 pay close to same price as STI, sometimes more, because base models are not abundant, and many will not settle for a base RX8. I know I couldn't have. Most have options which bring it right at the STI price. Add Navigation and other options, and it will cost you considerably more. I paid $3 grand more for my RX8, then I did my STI, because I got the top of line model. So, I believe it's both IN and NOT IN the same price class.

I couldn't live with myself if I bought the base model... But I couldn't afford the navigation, the GT moonroof is as expensive as I can go. I looked at the STI quickly and think it's a little too expensive for me. So I looked at the WRX and even though the AWD in winter would be... fun, and I think it's more of a 'racing' car than the RX-8, I think the leather, suicide doors, and overall finish is better so I'm going to stick to the RX-8. Just my 2 cents. PS. I thought the RX-8 shifting was a little notchy.
Also, I'm glad there isn't a Kill section in this forum. RX-8 isn't about killing other cars, it's about the total refinement, which I think the original post was about in a way. Neons, sorry, SRT-4's love they're KILL KILL KILLS, but I wouldn't be happy with the lack of luxury and style just for performance.

Superior car forums like this one don't need kill sections to prove anything. I know I have the best car for me everytime I look at it. Street racing is dangerous and illegal. the rx8 is not about cheap thrills. I hear over and over again it's fast enough in real world driving. 300 hp would be overkill and unneccessary for a car like my rx8. It does'nt need 300hp to get the job done on the road. I would never buy a car for the reasons kill freaks do.
