BlueEyes is right, you have NO business in that car at this point in your life. Period. I suggest investing in some economics classes so you can understand exactly why that is. However noone here can stop you, but don't be surprised when you fall on your face if you catch a lot of **** for making foolish and rash decisions.

Reading this thread up to THIS post made me think you were actually a decent teen. I use to think you were some immature kid posting stupid comments in EVERY thread. Sometimes you reminded me of Zumn.
After reading this post, I realize you are still some dumbass 18 year old trying to get attention.
Remember, YOU posted on a PUBLIC forum asking the PUBLIC'S opinion on your thoughts. Remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion.
A young and easily angered teenager like yourself does not deserve a Lotus. Teenagers like you make me feel embarrassed for being a teen.

My only suggestion is to go drive or ride in a lotus.
While they are great cars at the race track, they are pretty much go-carts with body panels. Simply getting in and out of the door is an epic pain in the ***.
Its not a car to drive around town in.

$1.5k a month is not nearly enough income to afford a Lotus. Sure you could make the payments, but what about unforeseen circumstances? A Lotus is not a cheap car to insure and because of its design it's easy to total. What if you suddenly realize you don't have time to take on multiple jobs because of schoolwork, you don't want a car note pampering your flexibility on what to do with your life. Lastly, have you even inquired as to how much interest rate a Lotus purchase is going to entail? In the current financial climate I can't see too many banks tripping over themselves to loan a 19 year old money to buy an overgrown toy car.

Exactly.
Spoiled kid. Grow up and realize how fortunate you are that ur parents are in the position to give you all the things you have. Do you want to live the next 3-4 yrs paycheck to paycheck? Thats what will happen if you get the Lotus. And guess what happens when something unexpected happens and you are short....Mommy and Daddy have to step in to bail you out.
How do you think ur parents feel??? Here they give you this incredible gift (RX-8) and its not good enough. They gave you that gift so you wouldnt have a car payment, not so you could greedily take the car and go out and buy an additional car with the $ you are saving from their generosity. I bet you never thought of it that way, ur just thinking about yourself...is an unfortunate byproduct of today's spoiled youth.

okay, i just got off work,
let me be the first to say thank you to everyone who replied and gave me some good feedback, my decision for now is to save the money for 2 or 3 years and maybe i can buy cash.
AS for the other few people who posted and just had to say things like
im a "spoiled kid" or **** like "im embarrassed to be a teen because of teens like you".
should i say sorry for being called a retard ? for being tempted and asking for advice?.
hmmmm. no, i will not. i apologise if you think that comment towards me was O.K. but my "immature" self doesnt think it was appropriate at all.
and for someone to tell me im spoiled and ungrateful just because i want to spend my money on a car i've wanted . i dont work as hard as i do and as MUCH as i do. for someone to call me spoiled who doesnt know a DAMN THING ABOUT ME. except that i wanna buy a lotus.
u know ..... i could go on and on. but im over it.
TO EVERYONE who helped me in replying to this thread thank you.
you guys helped me come to a good decision and now this way i have a goal to get to with saving my cash. thank you again.

Hey man, I'll admit that I've been spoiled in my upbringing (yes, including with cars), but I'll also be the first to tell you to put that money away. Once you start getting hit with monthly/daily expenses, that money is going to disappear FAST. Figure, $1500 per month is only $18,000 per year. That's not much, especially when you're paying rent/mortgage, utilities, phone service, insurance, meals, entertainment, etc.
It sounds like you're a pretty motivated guy, so just wait until you're pulling down some serious money after college. I think you'll be happy you waited.

My honest advice..........no way in hell should you buy the Lotus.
You work three jobs. Three low paying jobs. Service jobs. Jobs where you can easily be replaced.
Jobs that will get hit hard if the economy begins to suck even harder, and people's disposable incomes shrink. (Think: do I put food on the table or pay the mortgage, or do I go buy expensive stuff at Guess? Do I go pay for paintball, or do I stay home and use the PS3 (free) and watch TV which is free?
Do you still want to be working 3 jobs forever?

I use to be in your situation once. I was working 2 jobs making $2,500 a month(After taxes) with 0 expenses. My advice to you is finish school first before having to worry about making the payments on anything. Things can get very ugly very very fast especially if you're forced into a situation where you have to put the payments before school.
Some people get lucky though.
But I didn't

shinka, its good u decided to put this off. i make more than 1500/month and i live at home with mom and dad for next to nothing. However i make the payments on my 8 and the insurance is under my name, so its off the charts. even if i didnt have the payments on my 8 and lets say for ***** and giggles i didnt have to shell out all that cash for the insurnace and i didnt pitch in paying the bills at home, i would never even dream of buying my all time dream car (which is coincidentally an elise). its just not in the cards. just because you can make the payments and just get by with insurance payments at the bare minimum coverage, you cant afford the car. you have to factor in repairs. and even one repair/maintanance on a lotus would be alot of $$$. just go and actually look at one of the cars in person. play with it in a video game and obsess over it for few days and you will realize its silly to think you can have this at this point. thats what us youngsters do(unless we actually follow through with our impusle and get ourselves into trouble). If you spend all your money on a car, your friends call (assuming you have some, lol) and want to go do something, you say no...lets just sit by my car, i cant afford to see a movie this month. Would it really be worth it? I acutally gave up some of my freedom to spend money ***** nilly when i bought my 8. do i regret it? sure, it was sort of an impulse, albiet a realistic one. But to be honest, all i gave up to comfortably afford my 8 was my weekend bar hopping baiscally so its worth it in the end. Plus with my job im working 6 days a week so the drinking would have had to go anyways. I love my 8 now that i have it.

here is what I think..from my experience.
I onced made that mistake that you were about to make.
when I had two cars already(which is more than I needed), I went across this really nice FD. I struggled for a while and bought it while I didn't have a job. I thought the spending money I was getting would be enough for the payment and insurance.
I put 50% down, and according to the plan, I will never have a problem. But things never work out how you planned. The payments were not even that much, but it put a lot of pressure on me. And decisions like this will affect you a lot of ways that you won't even think of. I felt like it's distracting my school work..somehow.
And my expenses were only food, gas, insurance and house tax. I already paid off the FD, but I would never do something like that again. Sure it's fun driving what you want to, but I would suggest you to focus on school instead of working 3 jobs. Graduate earlier and get one job that pays more than the 3 you have together.
You made the right choice

Are you planning to live at home until you pay it off? Are you really sure that you can afford the payments and insurance on your teenage income? What are you going to do when you lose one or more of your jobs due to the bad economy?
Sorry, but it's a bit ridiculous for a teenager who's living at home and driving an RX-8 to go out and buy a Lotus because the 8 isn't good enough. You don't know what the real world is like, and if you sign the papers on a Lotus I guarantee you that you will live to regret it.
Also, you are coming off as a spoiled rich kid, so don't be surprised that you take a little heat for it. People are losing their homes and an 8 isn't good enough for you at 18 years old...sheesh.

That is interesting. I used to think the same way. I also think that you would have a blast with a Lotus for about 4 or 5 years, then you will crunch the numbers...
But first, what did you think of the test drive? Then read everything you can at lotustalk.com.
You will soon realize that those Lotus are not what you have in mind. You want a mini exotic, this just ain't it though.
Rx8 don't gotta worry about the battery bracket failing, cracking a $10,000 fiberglass rear shell. Or a host of other problems from a car that saved weight down to using minimal lousy hardware to put it together.
Wealthy man's track toy. Period. It breaks, he buys another one. None of your income sources are stable or long term. How long is your housing going to be free for.
You wouldn't qualify for a home loan on your income. I have a new one. Recent bathroom shower moisture problem, $3000 fix to tear down, mud float, tile. All I can do is shrug, pay the contractors, and go oh well a new exhaust is not really important at this time.
You read about all these guys getting rid of their rx8 in their 20s.... It is true, every year that passes, a freaking sports car is less and less important compared with everything else.
Then I suppose you turn 40 or 50 and suddenly you need sports cars again. Then you die and can't enjoy it anymore. The 40 minutes a day spent driving just don't cut it.
It's great that you're already doing all these Muay Thai when you're young, because sport cars and video games work best for the elderly and crippled.

It's a Cavalier
Shinka... dude.
Stop working so hard, and concentrate on your GPA at school. Study hard, man.
Seriously. You graduate with a strong GPA with a valuable major, and you're going to look back and think $1500 is pocket change.
F' working all the time right now. Study. But have fun, make some lifelong friends, and create some good memories. It'll pay off.
I can spot the retards at work that never took the time to have fun, and did nothing but work their whole lives. They're empty people. You only have one shot at this.

You are better off buying an older exige or elise and then supercharging it. The new kits are reliable and produce more horsepower, and it would also be cheaper in the long run. Going from an RX8 to a NA elise or exige will be quite a difference, and you are are talking about a mid-engine car with much different handling characteristics. Learn the car, then add power, that way I don't have to read about another Lotus wrecked on the roads. Definitely drive one, I drive mine everyday it is not snowing, but they are not for everyone. That is why you see people buy them and then sell them in less than 6 months, people think they are cool looking but many cannot use them as a daily driver. Getting in and out is not that big of a deal, you get used to it quickly. Especially if you buy an elise, then at least you can take the top off easily. It is a toy and it can be expensive. You can get great deals on low mileage cars, then mod it to your liking. Having an elise, I would not upgrade to an Exige S or an Elise S, I would just by the NA and supercharge it myself. The new intercooled superchargers add over 100 hp, just as a comparison. The slightly older supercharges that added about 50 hp had 12.4 to 12.6 second time slips in the quarter, which is plenty fast.
