Kimi Raikkonen's management is believed to be in talks with Mercedes GP about a race seat in 2010.
With McLaren signing Jenson Button, the Finn's manager Steve Robertson said on Wednesday that Raikkonen, 30, would take a year off in 2010 and go rallying instead.
But with Brawn/Mercedes now needing a driver to pair with Nico Rosberg, rumours quickly emerged that Raikkonen is an option.
Brazil's O Globo went as far as to report that a deal with the Brackley based team is a certainty, citing the information of the authoritative commentator at SporTV, Lito Cavalcanti.
He said an agreement was finalised on Wednesday.
Robertson would not confirm the news but he did not rule out the possibility of a Mercedes deal, amid reports in Spain's Diario Sport that Raikkonen is in talks with Citroen about a World Rally Championship seat.
To the German news agency SID, Mercedes' Norbert Haug would not shed any light.
"We want to have the best possible lineup and there are still some very capable drivers on the market. There will of course be speculation," said the German.

Ferrari to release Schu for Mercedes seat - Jordan
Sunday 22 November at 04:01 : Nov.22 (GMM) Speculation that Michael Schumacher is planning a full return to formula one is continuing to build.
So far the rumours are being played down by the 40-year-old's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm and officials for Brackley based Mercedes GP and its parent Mercedes-Benz/Daimler.
But British television pundit Eddie Jordan, who gave the German his formula one debut more than 18 years ago, is commenting with apparent authority that a deal for 2010 is very possible.
He revealed that Schumacher, who recently signed a new Ferrari consultancy contract through 2012, met with Ross Brawn and Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche in Abu Dhabi three weeks ago.
"I understand he was due to meet Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo with a view to him being released -- and that it will be approved because it is in the interests of F1," Jordan is quoted as saying by the BBC.

USF1 News and Abuse
Argentine signs conditional USF1 race deal
Argentine driver Jose Maria Lopez has reportedly signed to race with the USF1 team in 2010.
The 26-year-old former GP2 driver, who has recently been racing in his country's touring car championship, must complete a $8m sponsorship package but has signed documentation at the team's Charlotte base, the Corsa publication said.
"The agreement with the American team is done," said Carlos Garcia Remohi, an official with the Argentine club.
"We have a week to finish collecting the budget."
Lopez, who occasionally tested with Renault a few years ago, was pictured by the ambito.com website standing at the USF1 entrance with principals Ken Anderson and Peter Windsor.
"To be specific, at this moment we lack about 20 per cent of the budget," Lopez's father confirmed.

USF1: Er, what was that Peter?
Jose Maria Lopez claims that he has essentially secured a deal to drive for US F1 next season, the deal being dependent on the Argentine youngster finding up to $8m in sponsorship.
On his personal website the youngster reveals that after preliminary talks he has visited the team's North Carolina HQ when there was a verbal agreement that a deal will be finalised next week. With reports that Lopez has already found 70 percent of the money required by US F1, he now has to find another $2.5m.
"I would be very happy if he raced with us next year," Peter Windsor told Autosport.com. "He's not just another driver on the list. Jose is more than that. He is a driver we are interested in and we want him to be with us. We would like to sign the contract as soon as possible"
Flashback just three months to August when Windsor told Sports Illustrated magazine: "We've been offered well over three-quarters of our racing budget by two drivers already, neither of whom have raced in Formula One but both have won races in GP2. Both of them have massive sponsorship they can bring us from their home country. Ken Anderson and I have got to be very strong, look one another in the eye and say, 'No, we're not going to accept that money, we're not going to hire those guys because we're going to remain true to our convictions'.
"There are very good American drivers out there," he added. "To be honest, shame on Formula One and shame on American motorsport that some of these great young Americans with single-seater talent have not been nurtured more and given more opportunity."
Quite.

I figured when I read the first article that the second was soon to follow. Remember what I posted about some in the press having it out for them.

Brawn not backing Ferrari's three-car push
Ross Brawn has played down the likelihood that F1 teams will be allowed to field third cars in the near future.
The Mercedes GP team boss' former employer Ferrari has been running a high profile campaign for the rule change.
But Brawn told Bild newspaper: "I do not believe in three cars. Ferrari keeps the dream alive, but the starting grid is filled completely normally with at least 20 cars and there is no space for more."
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo insists the Maranello team would offer Michael Schumacher a full time cockpit if Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were allowed to have another teammate.
"We are not in a position to offer him a spot even if we would be in favour of having a third car on the track," the Italian said in a radio interview with La Politica nel Pallone on Monday.

F1 Boss Sets Dec. 9 Deadline for 2010 British GP
LONDON (AP) -Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has announced a Dec. 9 deadline to decide whether there will be a British Grand Prix next year.
The race that has run every year since 1948 at various circuits looked set to return to Silverstone after Donington Park failed to find the money to stage the event. But talks appear to have stalled, and Ecclestone said on Sunday that the next meeting of the F1 commission would decide whether to take it off the 2010 schedule.
Ecclestone told BBC Radio that there won't be a 2010 British Grand Prix "if there's no contract in place (by Dec. 9)."
http://sports.myway.com/news/11222009/v5891.html
This and the talks with Canada are probably the reason that the 2010 calendar isn't firm yet.

Maybe not the most exciting news for the rest of you, but as a Swede I'm delighted to see a young Swedish talent be allowed to test the Mercedes GP at Jerez now.
Oh yeah, there was some Indy Car driver too who got to test
Mike Conway and Marcus Ericsson will test with Mercedes at next week's three-day young driver session at Jerez.
The news was not announced by the Brackley-based team but instead published on an itinerary issued by the Spanish circuit.
26-year-old Conway is an IndyCar driver who has tested in the past with Brawn's predecessor Honda. Ericsson, 19, is the new champion of Japanese F3, who recently made his GP2 debut in the Asian series.
He began his single-seater career in 2007 by winning the Formula BMW UK championship.

Piquet is still hoping for a comeback... I really think he burned all his bridges with F1 though.
Nelson Piquet Jr hopes to continue his Formula One career with the Campos team when the Spanish outfit enters the sport in 2010, but admits that he might not fit the profile team bosses are looking for.
Fellow countryman Bruno Senna has been confirmed as a Campos driver next season, and the prospect of having two famous family names such as Senna and Piquet teaming up is more than enough to stir up good memories within Brazil's passionate F1 fans.
"I would be absolutely delighted, it would be marvellous for the Brazilian public," Piquet said, as reported by France's Auto Hebdo. "All depends on the team now, but they seem to be looking for a Spanish driver."
The former Renault team member was speaking from the fifth annual International Challenge of Stars karting event, which Felipe Massa – another fellow Brazilian – organises.
