2009 world champion Jenson Button appears poised to leave Brawn GP, which has been bought and renamed by Mercedes, and join McLaren for the 2010 season.

The Guardian newspaper said a three-year, 18m pounds sterling (in total) contract is set to be signed by the 29-year-old Briton, at the end of a protracted salary-increase standoff with Brawn management.

The Daily Mail said the deal could be completed before the end of the week.

"The one thing we don't want is Jenson left in limbo," said Button's manager, Richard Goddard.

Brawn chief executive Nick Fry hinted at the outcome in conversation with BBC radio on Monday.

"We've had discussions with Jenson which we think are (about) a sensible salary and you know this (the Mercedes buyout) is not going to change anything in that respect," he said.

"I hope Jenson is still with us next season. But we have to recognise that formula one is not divorced from the rest of the world.

"The reason we survived as a team was that we operated in a sensible way, within our means," Fry said.

The Mirror quoted Fry as saying Button is Brawn's "no.1 priority" but questioned whether McLaren is actually offering him a better deal.

"He's got to decide how much the loyalty, and everything we have given him, counts and how much money counts if he is able to get more elsewhere -- which, frankly, I doubt," he said.

It is reported that McLaren's offer is at least 2m pounds per year higher than Brawn's, but The Times cited Brawn sources in insisting that Button has actually been offered 8m and wants more.

Fry also backed away from speculation that, with Nico Rosberg almost certain to race with Mercedes GP in 2010, the Stuttgart carmaker is pushing for another German to be his teammate.

"I can confidently say that that is totally incorrect," Fry said. "Clearly a German driver would be nice for them (Mercedes) but we don't need two German drivers, that's not the intent."

Mercedes' Norbert Haug confirmed: "We definitely do not want to have a pure German team. It's an international team and we want to have the best drivers in the car."

Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche said Mercedes would not "dictate" the identity of the lineup to team boss Ross Brawn.

"We will talk and listen to what he wants to do and typically agree," he said

 

Kimi will not participate next year

Kimi Raikkonen will be absent from the Formula One grid next season, his manager Steve Robertson announced to the Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat late on Tuesday.

The Finn, having agreed to make way for Fernando Alonso at Ferrari, had been in serious talks with McLaren, but the parties reportedly disagreed about his salary, sponsor duties and his freedom to race in rallies.

"The only option for F1 next season was McLaren or nothing," Robertson said. "Kimi and McLaren were unable to reach an agreement, so he will not drive at F1 level, at least not next year."

Raikkonen's severance deal with Ferrari means that he stands making more money by taking a year off than he would if he had stayed in F1.

Turun Sanomat said the most likely option for a Raikkonen return in 2011 is with Red Bull Racing. Next year, he is likely to be active in rally cars and possibly the Le Mans 24 Hours, the newspaper added.

I'm predicting now that Lewis will beat Jenson soundly and that Jenson will complain throughout the whole season. Lewis will take every loss in stride and will thank the team every step of the way including when they're down and use the term we whenever they're up. Jenson will be a little different I suspect.

damn, one of my other fav drivers on the track w ill not be racing next year . man its going to feel weird not seeing the Ice Man not racing.

But i think its good also for him. so when he comes back, he wouldnt have that ran out feeling any more. Cant wait to see the lemans with him, and what team he would drive for.

 

Spa issued new racing license

Spa-Francorchamps has been issued a new operating license.

The popular and historic Belgian Grand Prix venue had its original license revoked recently by an administrative court, following the complaints of local residents about noise.

But according to rtbf.be, a new license was signed in earlier this week by Philippe Henry, the planning minister of the Wallonia government.

The new operating license is reportedly valid until March 2011.

This is good news for at least one season. Let's hope that it can be renewed for a longer period.
I don't know who will be the faster of the McLaren drivers. It will be interesting to watch.

Michelin and Goodyear, the most recent tyre brands in formula one, have played down suggestions they might take over from Bridgestone as F1's exclusive supplier in 2011 and beyond.

A spokeswoman for Michelin's North American headquarters said the French company is not interested in returning to formula one, after it pulled out at the end of the 'tyre war' era three years ago and then rowed with the governing FIA.

The American brand Goodyear left F1 at the end of 1998, following an ultra-successful three decades on the grid.

"We have no plans to re-enter F1," spokesman Ed Markey told the Akron Beacon Journal, which like Goodyear is based in Akron, Ohio.

"However, we continually evaluate a wide range of opportunities to determine the best fit for our strategic direction and make decisions based on the best interests of the company," he added.

Other reports said the Italian tyre maker Pirelli, having shown interest in obtaining the 2008-2010 tender, is also not likely to be interested in returning to F1.

I wish micheline would come back, they seemed to be the superior tire...with the exception of the intermediate...seems like the bridgestone had them there.

 

Me too, i like michelin. as for pirelli, i never really cared for them. but then again, i never owned any tires from them.

 

I'd like to see two tire manufacturers again to drive some tire performance competition. And also see them lift the requirement to use two different tires in a race. I say if you can make your car run the whole race on 1 set of harder tires then good for you!

Jenson was just LUCKY...he could not even beat Webber in the last race when he had nothing to lose.

If the new Japanese driver (Who is very talented) has given Jenson such a hard time I think Lewis will bring him to tears. The young Japanese driver is showing crazy potential while Lewis has shown that he can bring the complete game.

Yah, Kobayashi just tore up Vet Jenson. To be honest, there has not been any Japanese drivers in F1 these past 5 years that interested me. but man Kobo out of no where , just pwning ppl left and right. He reminds so much of Lewis, from the time that i seen him drive.

Man, him in a good car, would actually put Japan back on the map, as for F1 drivers. Sato, and Nakajima just havent lived up to my expectation.

 

So disappointed Kimi is not racing in F1 next year People make comments about his commitment or what he's like off track, who cares?! He's not a whiner like so many other "top drivers" and on track, in a good car he really goes for it. Hope it is really a break and not the end of his F1 career.

Hamilton is gonna wipe the floor with Button. I agree with everything above. He was just lucky to be in all dominant car at the beginning of the season and then no one capitalized on his down turn later. Sao Palo was the best drive ive ever seen from Jenson but he is still a mid pack driver at best. Unfortunately either Kimi or his management are more interested in money at this point. Why else would every team turn him down for saying he wanted too much money. This is all not to mention he will actually make more money next year by not racing thus proving money is the main focus for him right now. Its a shame because i like Kimi.

 

Indianapolis left a bad taste in my mouth forever. Their street tires never seem to last very long for me.
I'd like to see Yokohama get in the game. They make a race tire.

 

I would like to see tire competition. It would be nice to see atleast 2 or 3 different makers to choose from to add to the competition and show.

 

...well I do kind of agree with you there. Micheline was VERY irrisponsible when it came to that tire situation. And really, I think things would have been different had they stepped up and flew in a new spec tire. Now, could it have saved the USGP at Indy...mmmmm, I dont' know, but I'm sure it was a significant event in the demise of the race at Indy
