I honestly don't know. All I know is that there is something about the current European emissions laws that the current Wankel designs can't meet.
HC is always high for Rotary & low NOx cuz of the long & narrow shape of the rotor face.

they "kinda" solved that problem with Side Exhaust ports. kinda.

the next one they make it even "narrower" which improves thermal efficiency = lower emission.

they also redesign the trochoidal shape of the rotor housing(increase stroke = increase torque).

ANY of these so called MPG gains or differences are totally wiped up by some FAT *** overweight driver, or someone that carries a box of tools in Trunk, or forgets to keep AIR in Tyres up to specification.

I really do not understand HOW you and YOUR Motoring press are so OBSESSED with MPG!!! FFS.

And when Mazda come out with their SKY range ALL other makers including Ford will be behind.

Funny how the Mazda 2 outsells Fords (German made, now Thailand) Fiesta in Australia, considerably....what does that tell you.

No offense Chibana, or anyone else.
Who's talking about media? I'm talking about me, and what most Americans care about. And we're talking about U.S. sales figures here. I agree that fun-to-drive factor is important to ENTHUSIASTS, but the vast majority of Americans are not enthusiasts, and the difference in highway fuel efficiency between the Fiesta auto (6-speed dual-clutch--vastly superior to the 4-speed auto in the Mazda2) and Mazda2 auto is HUGE. I commute 85 miles ONE-WAY to Auburn Hills 3 days a week. The difference between 33 and 38 mpg is a big deal, and I would argue the difference in fuel efficiency in the auto (the only transmission that matters from a sales perspective) combined with the far better interior (and exterior, IMO) and kit of the Fiesta over the Mazda2 is why the Fiesta will outsell the 2 for the foreseeable future. The same thing applies to the 2012 Focus compared to the current Mazda3.

I'll believe the miraculous fuel efficiency claims of the Sky-G engines when they show up, but regardless, they have no influence on sales today.

If I didn't own the RX-8, and I were shopping for a car, the Mazda2 might have been higher on my list than the Fiesta due to the fun-to-drive factor of the manual transmission versions of both cars, but with my RX-8 as my toy, my commuter car needs now more closely reflect those of most Americans, although I still insist on a certain level of fun-to-drive, and it sounds like both the Fiesta, and the new 2012 Focus, have enough to make the drive pleasant. Since I'm stuck with an automatic of some kind, the 6-speed dual clutch in the Fords (especially the Focus version with manual shift mode) wins hands down compared to the miserable excuses for automatic transmissions in the Mazda2/Mazda3.

Why do they keep calling a Corvette a Corvette or the same goes for a Mustang or a Porsche 911?

Corvette and 911 hasn't ceased production.

Personally I don't think the RX-7 name plate should be revived... Because of the fact the RX-7 was such a great car. In this sense it should be like retiring a jersey. Homeage is paid to it with styling cues, engineering knowledge from it and continued pursuit of excellent performance imho. Bring on the RX-9 nameplate

The RX-9 name has actually already been used and it wasn't that great of a car. All the RX-7s were outstanding in their own right. When the legendary names are revived properly it is a fantastic sales tool. Some may not like this comparison but bringing back the Taurus name was pure business genius by Alan Mulally at Ford (Naming their supercar "GT" was retarded).

You don't retire a name like RX-7 if you can avoid it. There is no need to run through the whole numerical list every few years. RX-8 should be used again as well unless they are taking an all new direction like no suicide doors or something.

Paul.

they should just put the 16X into the RX-8 with 320 hp... and also offer a 2 door 2 seat 2700lbs 350 hp RX-7... an why not also a "detuned" 250 hp option into a new Miata and call it RX-5!!! And if I was rich I'd buy one of each!

The Renesis is the the problem. It burn too much fuel for the public and won't meet upcoming emissions standards. The 16X or what ever the next evolution of the rotary will have to overcome these roadblocks before another rotary engined car can be presented to the public.

Me too, IF IT Happens, why wouldn't they, the 8 has been a success sales wise, reliability and nett profit after warranty...well...I blame Ford.

How all this translates into the publics rotary "psyche" who knows, the 7 series was far from bullet proof, Series 1 (12A) was probably the best.

This is not surprising. **** poor fuel efficiency with underperforming engines that rarely make it to 100,000 miles without losing compression does not translate into sales.

Do you know why they didnt use GT40?

Because they had let another company purchase the rights to the name GT40 in the intervening years. That company in turn sold it to company in Ohio. Ford decided they didn't want to pay the high price offered by the Ohio company to license the name back.

For years I've said that should have been called GT44 which would have made complete sense since the '40' represented inches and the new one was 44 inches in height. Mulally arrived after that nonsense though.

I think a convertible one would probably just be a mx-5 with a rotary in it =rx-5.
