I freaking love this car. There will be days when it beats the hell out of me and I don't like it so much but that won't be a whole lot different from the WRX. I will also miss my WRX it was a wonderful car, but I took a turn today that I used to love taking fast with my WRX and I started laughing hysterically after I was through it. The other thing I found out today is that my insurnace rates are only going up $10 a month so that was a relief since I bought the car without checking first. First up, that boV has got to go, when I drive down the street old ladies are dropping dead of heart attacks and little children are scattering.

Take this but make ita touch louder and scarier and that's what my BoV sounds like. That is my BoV but it's on a otherwise stock car.

Took a couple pics in a parking lot down teh street but I'm just not good enough with my digi camera to adjust to the awful light I had to work with. I'll get better ones up soon enough.

It was clear that car has never seen a winter and was garaged (kind of a shame). It has a HKS Catback/TBE (not sure what dp but it appears to be a turboXS DP with a hi flow cat), K&N Typhoon, HKS BoV (holy crap it's loud), full set of Autometer Cobalt guages, HKS Type 1 Turbo Timer, springs, I haven't been able to get in good light to see what color they are, 12 disc changer and full panasonic system that sounds very nice, full tint (nice work whoever did it), short throw shifter (brand TBD). Now all that considered. I drove another used Evo and an Evo 9, I've also been in plenty of stage 4 WRXs (mid-high 12 second cars) and this car feels faster. Something tells me there's a little ECU work done. I also negotiated a set of Nokian winter tires and extra set of stock Evo wheels into the price.
Here's the kicker, I told them I wouldn't consider the car unless I talked to a Mitsubishi dealer about it. They got out the phonebook and I called the Mitsubishi dealer I'd be getting it serviced at. It just happened to be the dealer that sold it and also serviced it and the service manager knew the mods on the car and thr owner and told me getting it serviced under warranty there will be no problem with the current mods. Also told me that they wouldn't hessitate to buy a car that was owned by the previous owner. IN addition there were no red flags (lets hope they're not messing with me). This dealer in particular has 2 people in their service department with modded Evos and one is the founder of the local Evo club so I'm guessing they overlook a lot of mods when possible. Then I found out that the owner of the Evo offered up his phone number and the stock parts on the car if the buyer wanted them. Lastly I found out it was traded in on an Accord Hybrid. All these things added up to an adult driver that took great care of this car and didn't skimp anywhere.
Now, I need to figure out what to do about the BoV and the Intake. I knew these were not great mods, though I thought they were not as bad for the Evo as they are for the WRX but correct me if I'm wrong. The plan right now is to enjoy being a total ricer for a little while and then put the stock BoV back on if I actually get it from the previous owner. If not I was going to go for a full recirculating BoV like the Forge, or are guys still having problems with that? Not sure about the intake yet, my understanding is it's not worth it more so than it will do damage on the Evos. I also know the K&N is crap, but going to do some readin to decide if I want to try to go back to stock of waste money on another intake (depends on if the original owner will just give me the stock airbox). Why people do useless mods to the WRX/STi and Evo I'll never know.
The other good news is AMS is about an hours drive from me and I have a funny feeling they might get a visit soon and also have a funny feeling they've seen the car before I'll miss the Subaru community, I'll probably still post over there a bit, but I've always posted more here than anywhere else (you guys are so lucky!).

Also if the previous owner did ever have AMS's EMS installed I really doubt he told that local Mistubishi dealer about it because they probably wouldn't have vouched for the factory warranty being intact. I could be wrong though. Sounds like you found a mod friendly Mitsu dealership right off the bat, eliminating probably the biggest concern of people debating getting an Evo or an STi. I would take up the previous owner's offer to talk to you about the car. He's the 3rd party in all of this so he has no reason to lie to you about anything. If he's anything like me when it comes to the old SRT-4 I sold, he'd be relieved to know somebody a little older bought his Evo and then he'll proceed to talk your ear off about what he's done to the car and what he would have done next.
BTW...I like how the Evo looks with those lowering springs. Looks very aggressive. I've always been paranoid to mess with any of the stock suspension on the car because of how well it handles out of the box, but it sounds like the previous owner did his homework. Also if you remember when you talk to the old owner ask him how hard the install on the short throw shifter was. I've been thinking about doing something like that too even though the factory throw is pretty short, but I've heard mixed reviews from the people I've talked to. Congrats again dude. Enjoy the car. Let the secret ricer inside of you out for a few days. That BOV is so obnoxious it's hillarious.

Obviously that's not the case now because it would be very obvious if engine management was going through a standalone. LOL. On the factory ECU the Forge recirculating or the JDM MR are probably the most popular aftermarket pieces for holding higher boost on the factory 16g.

I still have not had the time to give the car a good looking at in daylight. If you can believe it I haven't even seen what boost I'm hitting at wot in various gears. The car is so intense, and there are so many dials and meters that I'm not used to that I keep forgetting to look. I'm still taking it all in with the car, driving it is an experience. I let my friend drive it at lunch today and all he could do is swear and laugh (he drives a chipped A4). Boost hits so hard in second that he got spooked the first couple times he got on it and shifted into 3rd almost instantly.
I'll update my experiences after I get more seattime tomorrow. A good portion of it today was with people in the car and I was just trying not to terrify them.
Also, the alteza style lights bug me a little and I always said if I got an Evo I'd get JDM or MR tails right away. However with the car being blue I'm not so sure now that the cleared out tails aren't the best looking combo. Gonna go search for pics of Blue Evos with the JDM lights... But anyone that knows what I'm talking about hear I'd be interested in opinions.

Good choice one the Evo, Ike! How about "EVOIke"? I might have actually bought an Evo myself if they were a little easier to get (they aren't sold on my island). I do have a modded 1G Eclipse GSX though, which is the definition of loud and obnoxious.
You gotta admit its kind of fun too, right?

HKS makes high quality ****. In fact that particular exhaust retails for close $1k. At least you know the previous owner didn't cut corners on the car. Stands to reason that somebody willing to spend that kind of money on a CB exhaust for an Evo took good care of it. Damn. Evo to Honda hybrid. He must be in a state of depression right now.

Just got off the phone with the previous owner of the car... I'm getting all the stock parts tomorrow, maybe not the exhaust right away because I don't know what the hell I'm going to fit it in. Found out the car has a new clutch and flywheel that were installed about 2k miles ago (Fidanza flywheel and Act stage 3 clutch). That would help explain why the car has almost no lag and is more responsive than other evos I've driven. From what I've heard the Fidanza is great until you get to extreme horsepower levels. The the nice thing is I notice no drawbacks with this clutch and flywheel compared to the stock setups I've driven.
I asked about a flash and the guy just laughed and said all his Evo buddies were convinced he was lying to them about not having any EMS, flash, or boost controller. It doesn't have anything like that but said he has driven a lot of Evos and boost just doesn't hit as hard and as early in them as they did in his car even pre flywheel. I agree since I had just driven another Evo with almost identical mods to the car that I bought, they just didn't compare.
I checked out what I'm boosting in a couple gears today and I saw up to 23 psi and I never got out of 3rd. Full boost hits around 3k RPMs which is faster than any evo I've ever been in.. The owner also told me he took it to the strip once when it just had exhaust and without launching he ran 13.3@106. He also claimed he changed the oil about every 1500 miles (he did it every 2-3 months since he didn't put many miles on it) and has receipts for about 10 oilchanges. The car has 13k miles on it if I never mentioned that
Steiner, the short shifter I have is a B&M and I forgot to ask how long it took him to install it but I'm sure it was very fast. He told me a close friend of his works at a big tranny place near here and it took them 4 hours to do the clutch and flywheel, so I'd imagine the SS was a snap. Also the springs are Tein S Techs. The speaks are some Alpine seperates and I think that about covers all the unknowns with the car.
So it looks like I got a pretty good car and I feel like I got a hell of a deal on it.

That thing sounds like a beast. Imagine what it could do with a 10.5 hotside and a flash. I'm guessing the flywheel is the main reason it's so much more responsive. Now I want one!
Did the guy say why he sold it?

The previous owner claims that even stock for stock the car spooled 500rpm faster than other stock Evos he drove. Could be the usual my car is just a factory freak BS, but I tend to believe him. No reason to lie, and I'd be shocked if a flywheel makes that much difference, but I'm sure it makes a difference. He went on for a bit about the flywheel and what a great mod he thought it was.

It's tough to say what kind of power you're putting down RIGHT NOW considering there's no baseline dyno, it's never been tuned, and the only empirical info he's given you is a 13.2 in the 1/4 mile...but even then he didn't launch it hard and the mods were different. I'm guessing...an '04, with your mods, untuned...maybe 280-290whp on a Dynojet. Throw in the 264/264 cams, and a dyno flash and tune with a safe AFR...**** dude...close to 350whp on a Dynojet maybe. I'm just guessing based on very limited experience though. It's up there though. I would say buy the cams, but wait to install them until before the flash and tune and/or the car start to not feel so fast to you anymore. Although just a tune and flash right now would be worth its weight in gold.
