$90k would likely remove me from the market. Just too many other things going on in life to spend that amount of money on a car.
I agree, and I don't think it will sell above M2, Cayman, RS3 and TT RS territory as a small performance sports car. My guess is they will aim for under 50 base.
90K does sound steep. However, it really depends on what exactly it is. I don't think anybody would have thought that the GTR in 2017 would have the MSRP it does now back when the R34 was out. If mazda goes all out, they may be attracting buyers that it never had before.

Or...they price most rotary enthusiasts out of the market and hardly sell any. That's why I think trying the supercar route is wrong. Plus those other cars have passionate enthusiasts just like the rotary so prying buyers away from those other cars would likely be very difficult unless Mazda would be massively undercutting them on price.

Well, lets look at the positives of a highly limited supercar run:
Emissions exemptions are easier to come by for limited production vehicles
Your business can be really choosy on who their customers will be (Ford, Ferrari, etc)
You know exactly how many cars may need to be recalled for repairs and that number is very limited
Limited productions increase desirability in the market, which can increase profits
Limited productions bring in a completely different buyer in the market, which is never a bad thing
Limited production vehicles tend to be driven less, and brought in for recall work less, as those owners are only concerned about maintaining the cars value
So, I don't really see any downsides to the limited production runs of a supercar for Mazda, just for you, the "enthusiast buyer".
And after Mazda's last experience with "enthusiast buyers", you can sort of understand why they might not want to expose themselves in the same way again.

Well, if you can price it somewhere in the 40s to around 50k, I think it can still be attainable for a lot of the true enthusiasts, but at the same time, weed out a lot of the undesirables. Let the younger crowd stick to their BRZs.

In a world of $60k, 650+ HP world-class sports cars, a car with an "unreliable" oddball engine and 450 HP from a brand know for hairdresser's cars is worth exactly jack and ****.
Monied investment buyers aren't going to buy a car that doesn't have the numbers if it doesn't have the "right" badge.

If it gets announced - I'd almost be tempted drive drive my rusting and rattling 8 across the top of Russia to be there at whatever launch/release event happens.

This has nothing to do with age in my opinion. I'm a Gen-Xer and I know I could not afford an RX in that price range. I got hooked on rotaries when I was 12. Someone on my street had a black RX-7 that blew my mind. Of course, I was too young to buy one When the FD came out, I was studying at university, so I missed the boat then. When the 8 came out, I was still paying my student debt, so I had to wait. I bought my 8 used because there was no way I could afford a new one.
I'm just sayin' that being a true enthusiast has nothing to do with buying power and/or age.
I don't know about the US but here in NZ it was a mix of older guys (with money) that had previously owned rotaries plus people who just liked how it looked and drove the bought the rx8 when it was new and $62000 .
The younger guys only start buying them 10 years or so down the track when they get cheap . My point is if it's a good looking car with decent handling and power , it will sell .
