stunning car, no question.

No tech specs about powertrain (is a rotary..this is important).

my bet for a possible production car is for 2020...the name is VISION, that suggest a long sight in terms of development.

There was another angle which showed a 9000 RPM redline. Unusual that 7000-9000 RPM was highlighted in dashed red with 9K+ in solid red.

Do you think they will call it an "RX-9"? I have doubts only because there was one already, the Luce(929) came with both the 12a and 13b and I am pretty sure countries that got it with the rotary got them dubbed as an RX-9.

I see too many people assuming that it is has no right to be replacement for an RX-7. Mazda never said it was a direct replacement for an RX-7. For all we know it could be a revival of a Mazda sports car with GT influence (something that the RX-7 never was). E.G. 2 seater RX-8 or Cosmo. Not to mention that it is only a design concept, not an actual production car.

Mazda RX-Vision Tokyo concept previews new RX-7 coupe | Auto Express

Interesting article with some Q and A with design and R & D.

"In 2017 it is the 50th anniversary of the Cosmo Sports (Mazda’s first production car with a rotary engine). Therefore we want to announce something in 2017 – and not a concept car.” - Kiyoshi Fujiwara, head of Mazda R&D
So a new Cosmo 2018? A 2 seater concept but it would actually be transformed into a 2+2 with a paddle shifter semi-automatic up-market car --> essentially a Mazda Cosmo for >40k? but i don't like that rumour purely because it pushes the RX back to 2020.

Thinking about it they were really pushing for reliability, emission and fuel economy. Great idea would be to nail that and then find out how to squeeze more power out of it.

In a few years it could very well have CF wheels, the new GT350R is getting them. I know it is limited production, but in a few years they may be more standard on GT and Sports Cars. Same goes for the CF Brembos, a couple years ago they were unheard of, now they are more common, in a couple more years any car that is considered a sports car will have them standard. Same with full LED lighting, a couple years ago they were an expensive upgrade only option on Audi's, now all Acura's have them, KIA's have them.

From the above linked article, these are attention grabbers:

What targets would you have for fuel economy and emissions?

KF – Without any form of electrification, it should be at the same level as normal [non SkyActiv petrol] passenger cars. At this moment we are not working on a rotary hybrid system.

Will this be a turbocharged engine?

KF – We believe a turbocharger is one of the opportunities we would look at for the rotary.

How soon could a rotary make production?

KF – Firstly, we really want to ensure the quality of this car is really durable in the marketplace. We want to do testing work two or three times more than we do for other vehicles. This time we want to make sure there are no quality issues with rotary. Secondly, as a company we want to make sure the business is more robust, improve the figures, before introducing this model.

Could this car have a manual gearbox?

KF – If we have big power with the right weight car, manual transmission suits me. But some kind of automatic transmission like [Porsche’s] PDK is required by customers in the world.

Will it be called RX-9?

KF – In the past RX-7 was always a two-seater, or two plus two. RX-8 was a four-seater. If we put on RX -9, is it a six-seater?! Therefore, with this car you can probably imagine the number!

So Turbo, Rx7, 25-30 MPG, Manual with a dual clutch auto option . . . Sounds good to me. Also from the article, more use of CF to keep things light.

[QUOTE=Mossless;4725645]Mazda RX-Vision Tokyo concept previews new RX-7 coupe | Auto Express

Thank you for sharing that interview. There is lots to like in that interview, as it is CLEAR that Mazda has the passion to bring the Rotary back to the marketplace.

Interesting part in the interview is how he wants the testing of the car to be even more strict than in other Mazda cars. This says that they are clearly taking reliability and quality seriously.

But, going against the Cayman? OY.... better start saving now.

They will offer both a manual and a true paddle-shifter. They know they have to offer both to compete for buyers in this segment.

I agree 97.67% with that statement.
However, if they use current tech with paddle shifters or some other "manual mode", it should be acceptable

The car is just a concept, the R&D guy alluded there would be both in the interview. You won't have "Proof" until there is actually proof of a production car. It looked to me like there wouldn't be proof unless Mazda continues profiting, so the next couple years sales need to continue before we see this rolled out. It was good to know they have an engineering team still working on the Rotary. It was good to read they are focusing on the perceived shortcomings of the Renny (MPG, Reliability and Emissions). It was better to read that a Turbo most likely in the plans! I am glad the rotary hasnt died, that Mazda is continuing it along. If they can avoid the issues the 8 had at the start, then it should do much better.

Maybe it was cold? My 8 will light red dashes starting at 5~6k when it's cold and turn it off as the engine warms up, until only the painted one at 9k remains.

About 20 days ago i guess this and so close my vision.

I am going to look as a designer way. That car needs to be a bit smaller. I guess Mazda will be redesign the scale of the concept.

In theory that short rear needs weight distribution and some tips about hybrid batterys will be under the trunk or the back will be use for rear handling stabiliy otherwise that car will not be stable.

And also that short rear needs torquer engine feelings and throttle response as i wrote above for handling and stable effect both also.

In my opinion RX Vision concept deserves 500+ hp 500+ nm unless that concept language will be fail because that concept language is challenging for exotics and hypercars.

It needs power. Price will be high i am sure. That concept not stands humble.
