theres a evo 9 MR already?? when did that come out? whats the diff between the MR and the regular evo 9? impressive showing by the sti though. evo clearly won the performance battle last round, this time it seems the sti might come out on top. cant wait to read the article when it gets here.

 

i think its funny how they are talking about looks. they are both butt ugly. i'll take an evoIII or a impreza from the late 90s (right before the redesign) over their new versions any day.

 

Those two cars are like a butt hair apart in performance. It really is which you prefer.

 

Very true. For me the STI gets the edge because I'd much rather deal with Subaru than Mitsubishi.

 

id much rather deal witrh subaru than mitsu also, but in the last round the evo was definetly more fun to drive than the sti, it was more stable during corner, and had better steering respons imo. i wonder if sti has a much stiffer suspension this time around? i cant wait to testdrive them
and no one answered me whats the difference between evo IX and evo IX MR yet.

 

That's sweet - I've always been kind of annoyed that Mitsubishi had a faster car than Subaru.

If only there was an RX-8 bodykit for the STI...that'd be the perfect car

 

I don't know if I'd say the last one was definitely more fun, they went about their business in very different ways. The steering on the last Evo was certainly more precise though and the STi had a little more understeer.

As for the MR differences this time around I'm not totally sure, I know the differences between the Evo VIII MR and non MR but I think the differences between the two have changed for the Evo IX. Maybe Steiner will chime in.

 

The evo is the clear winner in my book. Looks, handles, brakes and warentee is all better then the scooby. Plus the evo still manages to cram all that power into a smaller engine. I'm just not feeling the scooby's new looks.

 

The warrnty looks better til you actually try to use it, and then get to deal with Mitsubishi service departments. Some Mitsubishi dealers are better than others, but as a whole I think it's safe to say Subaru dealers are better.

The rear is the same save for the taillights looking different and an air difused that doesn't add to the overall size. I never thought the rear was very big in the first place...

The wing is big, but besides that it seems like your average size sedan rearend to me.

I read that article last weekend. It was well done right from the introduction. I liked how they made it clear in the first paragraph that a small **** hair seperates the performance of these two fugly AWD beasts. Anybody who contends that one is clearly better than the other is simply a dillusional cheerleader. Thing is most owners will never push their cars hard enough to even understand what these things are capable of. I know I haven't. You really need a closed course or an autoX event to even speak on the subject with any credibility. I've had neither so I can safely say, at least at this point, that my car can outhandle its owner.

Pretty much the same things that differentiated the Evo VIII GSR from the Evo VIII MR...6 speed tranny, aluminum roof, vortex generator, leather seats, teflon coated tranny linkage, lighter BBS rims, softer Billstein shocks and (most importantly) about $3k-$5k.

I agree that Subaru > Mitsubishi, but San Rafael Mistubishi > all the Bay Area Subaru dealerships I visited. The best Subaru dealership I visited offered to let me drive a used WRX when I asked to take a spin in a white-on-gold '05 STi. I'd been corresponding with the guy for a while by phone and email and had been recommended to him by the STi forums. He knew my income was sufficient and my credit was excellent but he didn't budge. In and of itself that wasn't a deal killer, but making a high probability 30yr old prospect feel like a 17yr old kid was bad business. Anyways NorCal is lucky. Other parts of the country seem to have more complaints with their Mistu dealer. My Mitsu dealership was so confident their customers would like the Evo over the STi that, for about 6 months, they didn't even try to sell a modded '05 STi that somebody had traded in for an '05 Evo VIII MR. The STi had pink springs and a nice burbly exhaust. It pulled harder than the used '03 Evo they let me test drive, but I just loved how tight and responsive the Evo felt. Despite my nearly 10 year love affair with the STi - from Gran Turismo in college to WRC on the SPEED channel - I went with the underdog Evo...built and sold by a struggling NA car company.

Having the nation's best Evo dealer nearby is one of, if not, the biggest reasons I chose the Evo over the STi. We'll see if my little theory pans out when I bring my modded Evo in for warranty work. So far scheduled service has been good and I haven't been interrogated about my mods yet by any of the techs. In fact the finance manager keeps offering me a job. We'll see if I can parlay that into something positive if the **** ever hits the fan.

I honestly think a lot of the buzz about restricted warranties on the Evo forum was blown out of proportion and came as a result of younger drivers, on 0% financing, running high boost and dumping the clutch 10 times a weekend at 6k RPM's to impress their buddies from the local Junior College. 90% of the problems seem to be limited to the '03 Evo model too so, whatever the real cause, Mitsubishi felt the need to improve the durability of the drivetrain beginning in '04. In any event I've never been too overly concerned with it because I have enough common sense to realize Mitsubishi is not my personal pit crew. You pay to play and should always keep the Magnusson Moss Act of 1975...printed out...in your glove box...whenever bringing the car in for service. Information and knowledge goes a lot further than debate or criticism in my experience.

 

yeah go STi. STi is my dream car. and who knows. i admire Peter Solberg.
