EOI: Knightsports coming to Melb/Adel for ECU remapping any contenders

Hey there all, I have organised for The guys from Knighsports in Japan to visit Australia, mainly to attend the Adelaide Autosalon with our DEMO cars, the RX8 and FD RX7.
Also I thought it would be worth wile for the to Remap some RX8 ECU`s while they are here.
I basically need a minimum of 12 cars to make it viable for them to bring their tuner.
So anyone interested please e-mail me at info@revs-online.com.

price is $980 for what they call the basic tune, which involves fuel and ign mapping, fan cut in temp lower, oil metering pump mod, rev limit increase and speed cut remove.
At this point in time i`d say we will be using a dyno around the Carrum downs area in Melbourne ( near my good `ol mate Rohan from Xtreme Rotaries)
And in Adelaide will be using Morpowa auto dyno centre in Modbury.
Oh and the date will be tues the 7th of August and maybe carrying on into the 8th (wed)
Regards JasREVS also people can call me on 0411188488 for info..

Just had a nice long talk with Jason.

First thing is to checkout https://www.rx8club.com/far-east-asia-38/knight-sports-coming-town-112288/.

Taka, Melb date is 7th August.

The process is a dyno tune one, so its not just a flash and go away. They tune the flash to your car. Jason metion that you should only expect around 10hp gains. The fan mod should gain you about a 5deg drop in temperature.

Jason, I am interested.

7 August Taka is off work (official)!

That is exactly what I am after for a long time.

Speed cut is not required but hey, fan control I had a way, but still.... the map is what I am after, and there is no question about it. The best tune you can ever get!

The only draw back is not to allow Mazda to reflash your car, there is a unknown potential that will change the parameter. The recall flash done in 2005 (a the same time of heat shield recall) regarding stopping dyno at stationery has changed the map of some RE Amemiya customers and they are redone in Japan for free.

People do not miss that oppotunity!

Are they able to provide system whereby you can save the original program to an external memory source like Access Port or CAPA Unit to enable reinstalling original program whilst saving new MAP when taking car for service?

I just check the knight sports website.

また、WDSによるチェックも行っていますが、異常は検出されませんし、アップデイトも問題あ りません。

http://www2.ocn.ne.jp/%7Eknight78/SE3P.htm

They said "WDS will be able to check the car, will not detect any abnormality, update will have no problem"

Is that right Jas?

I assume from Jasons post that the equipment they have is NOT portable handheld equipment. And as they dont have anything on their site, I assume they dont sell it either so I would say no craig.

I am also very interested in this. As long as Mazda techs can still check codes on their wds for diagnostic fault finding purposes, which Im pretty sure is the case, well then that would be okay. However, You wouldnt want Mazda to reflash your ecu, otherwise you would loose th KS tune I would think. However, this may or may not be the case and we need further clarification , because I believe that Knightsport solder an added chip to the mother board.
Maybe this added chip stores the knightsport flash tune and prevents Mazda from altering ecu fuel/timing parameters when it reflashes???

I had a similar set up for my Audi turbo A4 when it was flashed with an aftermarket wetterer ecu tune. A chip holder was soldered onto circuitboard of ecu and wetterer performance tune was stored on a chip that was inserted into chip holder, preventing audi from altering the fuel/timing maps.

Just need these things clarified before fully committing.

Regards
Rexi

Basically, when you get the KS Remap, if you go to a dealer and get it reflashed, it will erase that map.
There is no reason to get a flash done after that anyways, you will be getting the better than Mazda factory tune...
Yes it would be good to have a STOCK map, then the KS map, but unfortunately it doesnt work like that..
I`m sure I could look after people that do say "accidently" erase a map or get into trouble etc... if that occurs we can go from there...

The Knightsports guys are great / loyal, genuine ROTARY enthusiasts, and cant wait to meet more of us Aussie RX8 heads!!! They have more than looked after me already, so i will be supporting them 100%
If only Aussies did business like these guys.................look out

It will be good to organise some sticker for the OBD port and somewhere, telling the Mazda people not to touch the ECU...

I guess it is wise to keep a copy of the tune Jas

That's why if someone could provide a ‘flash tuner’ enabling the programs to be swapped between factory & the KS map by saving onto external memory it would be great!!!

No accidental re-flashing by Mazda as you could reload factory program back prior to service etc.

There must be some IT “wiz kid” out there that can facilitate this technique! I’ve seen it done for other cars!

Everything is possible given enough time and money.

Cobb are doing it. KS appear to have gone down the path of a non retail unit. maybe later they will release something. MAYBE with the cobb unit you will be able to download the KS flash and play with it?

I need some information with the benefits of the revamp and what it involves.

I take it involves upgrading the chip which leans out the fuel, advances the timing and basically removes the fuel cut off?

Can anyone enlighten me with the real benefits of this upgrade. I'm struggling to source any info out there to explain what you get for your bucks....

Fuel maps controls how much and when the fuel being delivers. Generally, the car is running richer in fuel to protect the catalyst.

Factory makes the car with factory tune, ie nearly every Australian spec is the same. But you know and I know that every car is different. And more if you have done some mod to your car.

Jap tune the car without the Aussie fuel in mine, and even the fuel from Brizzy will be diff from diff refinery. It good to make it perfect.

Most piggybacks fail because they cannot control all parameters of fuel delivery until you spent mega$$$$$.

The Knight sport is simple, just change the accessory (compensatory) map on the stock ECU that keeps the car in certain AFR, at a particular point of throttle, at that particular time, at that particular rev.

Speed cut is irrelevant to us. Since we do not have a speed limiter in the first place.

This is exactly the same as telling Mazda that you've re-tuned the ECU with an aftermarket map, hence voiding the warranty
That of course if you still have warranty, if not, who cares

Fdracer, if for any reason our cars have some type of teething problems , ie car fails to start, goes into limp mode, rough running etc, after the KS techs have left the country for example, what are our options?
Can we 1. Return ecu to you for problem solving.

AND/OR

2. Have car reflashed by Mazda to their current flash to at least get car running normally again , but for the erasing of the KS flash.

My only slight worry is of the above scenario occurring , and not having the technical backup available to get car running again quickly.

I only have this concern, knowing that KS has not pretuned a local OZ ecu already.

Can you enlighten me further, as I seriously would like to have this done . Im sure that others are a little tentative also, and need some reassurance.

The way I see it, KR wouldn't be undertaking this upgrade if they knew in advance there would be teething problems, and even if there were any they would be in a position to respond via phone, email or fax for advice.

If I had the time I would be driving to Melbourne and get it done....I wonder if they would come to Brisbane?????

A good flash tuning process will enable reinstallation of the upgraded tune after the dealer provides a reflash (which can occur for a range of reasons, not just tuning). This is the process offered by all the major VW-Audi flash tuners and represents best practice.

Personally, I would have serious misgivings if reinstallation is not offered as part of the deal.

My 2¢

timbo, yes its offered by all the flash tuners as most of them are using freely available handheld units for uploading flashes, etc.

Unfortunately the ECU on the 8 hasnt been around for anywhere near as long as the VW ECU and as such very few people have hardward to allow people to reflash themselves. People like KS are having to lug equipment with them to do this day. As a result, once they have left the country, the ability to reflash involves sending your ecu to japan.

Give it time, its coming. In the mean time, I would say the chances of your ECU being overwritten is minimal if you advise the dealer not to. And as someone has mentioned before I think, cap the port with a big warning saying "DO it and your dead"

Ok, thanks Auzoom, Taka, for your helpful comments regarding this, At this point in time, i can`t see any reason for going to Mazda and getting a reflash anyway, when this tune will be far more beneficial than a Maxda reflash, and if any of the 8`s sold in Australia had software problems, surely 95% of them would have had their reflashes done and small problems rectified by now for any other than engine performance related issues????(correct me if i`m wrong).
I`m sure with their help we will make alot of happy customers.

I will also be asking (very nicely) to obtain the software and necessary hardware etc to reflash the ECU`s ourself here in Australia (Maybe i will ask when the owner is taking me out for dinner after a couple of glasses of good `ol Barossa red )
I think this will be beneficial to all our customers in Australia..

Hope this makes people more comfy with the idea.....

REgards Jas..
