this is the second time because i had a major issue with the car driving very horrible under boost and couldnt even idle after going into boost, i figured i had a vacuum leak but just couldnt pinpoint where it was coming from so i removed the turbo kit instead of troubleshooting the problem due to my daily driver car was in the body shop getting paint done so i had no transportation at the time, once i started removing the turbo kit i found a very large leak (silicone seal) at the block off plate greddy supplies for the 6th port i will not use that plate this time around from the research i have done looks like the plate is not needed...so now while the turbo kit was off i was able to purchase a full set of real silicone couplers and t-bolt clamps...btw the car has about 6k miles on it now so i hope once the kit is on it motivates me to drive it more often

update:
tonight i was able to finally get all my t bolt clamps to correctly it took several attempts at my local pipe store to get the correct sizing on the clamps due to different thickness on all the black silicone atp couplers & i just realized theres a pretty big difference between different manufactures of the t bolt clamps even though they are listed as the same measurement...these darn clamps can get pricey once they start to add up!

Nice pics man! I am planning on doing the greddy install myself and just wondering if you are having any "stupid" problems that you are running into. Have you had to cut or modify anything?? I am doing this in a 1 car garage also so I know its going to be tight so I just wannt make sure its not going to require major modifications. Thanks!

working on the ground is very tight, only modifications i can think of is cutting the lower fenderwell cover to fit the ic piping on both sides, and read the greddy instructions very well they can make the install soo much easier

it's doable, trust me.
is it fun? not really. :)
it can be done in a one car garage just fine, just make sure you organize all the small parts that you remove, like bolts and plastic rivets and such....also keep your tools organized, I can't emphasize that enough! I lost so many tools during the process and had to waste time finding them.
as for modifications, the only thing you have to modify is the fenderwell plastic and undertray. Easily done in a one car garage.

Hell yeah - you have to remove that brace.

It will cause no alignment harm.

I also recommend removing the oil sending unit; and both motor mounts to fit the turbo in there with plenty of space to work.

thanks kane i saw your previous thread looks like ill do that, is removing that oil sending unit a pita?

Kane
11-29-2008, 11:02 PM
Nah; adjustable wrench and it is off; you have to anyway to install the oil sending line; might as well drop it and the mounts; to make installing the snail easier.... IMO.

I have big hands; and am Clumsy....

^^once we pulled the motor and spun the crank pulley you could see parts of my apex seal floating around...the night my engine went i did hear marbles in a can and 20 min down the road while still in 6th gear i may have put too much load on the engine to lean it out?? i didnt have my access port hooked up so i wasnt sure where my afr's were

You really should try analyse what went wrong before you boost on the new engine ...

when i heard the marbles in a can i was "WOT" i actually took it up to about 120 (stupid me) once the engine is up and running im going to take it easy and hopefully get a tune really soon (when my engine blew i also just corrected a boost leak i had and was spiking to 10 psi and settling down to 8-9psi, previously was at 5 psi at wot)

if you went from 5 psi to 10 at wot I would suspect your wastegate was sticking somehow . If your tune was any good it would not have mattered .

when boost changed was after i corrected the boost leak i had, so when i had a boost leak coming from my bov flange, i had it welded (originally had some weired o-ring on the flange) thats when my boost raised consistantly

Glad to see ya get that car together! Hope it makes it to the magazine shoot here in the next few weeks.

You shouldn't have any problems with the turbo at all. It is balanced to .5 gram in2 and has the best thrust bearing you can put in it. If you have clearance issues with that lower coolant barb, just remove one of the steps in the barb. I didn't think you needed to if you went up with the 2 rubber lines and tied them off somehow.

Beside the emanage, I really favor the greddy kit after the turbo upgrade. That is really nice quality parts and the oil pan is also a very nice piece. After several years the technology got better with the accessport and give better control over tuning which is the most important thing with a rotary.

I would put hose clamps on coolant lines. If the car gets hot the coolant line might bow off the fitting. That would not be good. Hose clamps = cheap insurance.

I was going to ask about the hose fittings too on the water lines but I finally got them on. The bottom line is a mother f'r to get the clamp on. I just used the t/b lines and the one was super long and the other one just barely gets in there. Im hoping it wont leak from the amount of times I took it on and off. Need to try and tie the one line to something cause it hangs really close to the turbo.

saturday i was able to spend a couple of hours on putting the car back together, got the coolant lines hooked up to the turbo..the way bryan supplied the coolant lines i was able to hook up the hoses without clearance issues or kinks...one concern is the lower line is lightly resting against the wastegate shaft, think it will be ok?

the lower coolant line to the throttle body is very short, i used a 3/8 barb fitting from home depot to enxtend the hose
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y219/giznizmo/bnr%20upgrade/P1010487.jpg
the upper coolant line to the throttle body has plenty of line to reach the turbo

this is the best shot i could get of the turbo actually mounted

Greg I was thinking that lower coolant line can be wrapped with Kapton tape used for high temp electronics in my world. I'll ask if I can have a small bit, a little goes a long way. Another option would be installing a sleeve over that area, it shouldn't be heat that's a concern but like Konig mentioned it would probably wear over a long long long period of time. several layers of rubber and fibers. how long, depends on vibration.

I miss my turbo KA setup:bowdown:

You did the smart thing of putting the actuator on before you mounted the turbo. Im having a hell of a time getting the top bolt in, between the coolant lines. I need someone with small hands! I dont even know how Im going to tighten in up.....

That's a fantastic idea! Damn me for not thinking of that :) Well you have to remove the coolant line tho?

I figure next time I turbo I'll just use a turbo timer and say eff the coolant lines.

Just zip tie the 2 water lines together where they come off the fittings. That should keep the lower rubber line from resting on the actuator arm. Looks like a good fit to me! Also looks pretty easy to get to on the car as well.

I may put a 45 degree barb fitting there just to make it easily bolt up.

^^i was actually not looking foward to installing those lines but if you mount them when the turbo is loose in the motor mount location its very easy...the design is pretty close to perfect!

its not too bad to get to if you have a stubby open end wrench..i also lay underneath the car and reach my hand up there and tighen most of it by hand...hope this helps...if not pm me so i can help you out

placing a zip tie on the 2 water lines where they come off the fittings did the trick..the coolant line no longer rest on the actuator and still no kinks in the line!

not yet, but i havent put much time into it, car is currently in the body shop getting a light makeover. i should have my car back hopefully at the end of next week..then im going to do some datalogs and find out what my afr's and g/sec im pushing with the boost controller turned off...then depending on what i see im going to start tinkering with the boost controller..also noticed my greddy profec b spec II boost controller reading is about 2 psi higher than my prosport boost gauge. im planning on entering high boost levels with caution this time..haha

gregs where did you ever find gaskets to rebolt your turbo kit on?

i did find a suitable gasket. the last gasket i had trouble finding was the turbo outlet pipe, the gasket that works perfectly without any triming is a tial 38mm gasket..the remaining gaskets for the manifold/turbo, downpipe, intake are all from a t25 turbo (nissan silvia sr20det turbo)

im glad theres other options for sourcing gaskets other than greddy mainly because it takes too darn long

Yes, I agree with you Brettus...My MAF is pretty much on point and I believe the highest I have been able to pull was around 369 g/s at around 10-11 psi during a 3rd gear pull.

still going to tilt it, almost lay flat up against the radiator with a good amount of ducting/a way for air to escape through the IC.
