View Full Version : my car....flames.....
youngen 04-22-2007, 05:09 AM So tonight i was leaving a friends house to a party, when my car desides to have a gas leak and blow up..... I was driving to a party, when i noticed the rpm's wouldn't go higher and i was pushing the gass pedel to the floor, so i down-shifted to get the rpm's to shoot back up and when i did nothing happened so i pulled over. When i did so i turned the flashers on and when i did the car busrt into flames on the passenger's side of the car my best friend Rachelle was in the car and she was soo shocked that I had to basically get her out of the car about 5 seconds; soon after we got out the car, it burst into flames like a burnt piece of steak.....the fire department said it was a gass leak..
here are some pics....

Ricardo Headjuardo 04-22-2007, 09:38 AM Arson is a good way to cast off a supposed lemon. Of course maybe one of your rotors cracked again.

Not quite the first. Remember arosenkrans a few months back? Hers spontaneously combusted while parked. I believe they traced it to a fuel leak in the engine compartment.

expo1 04-22-2007, 12:12 PM Based on all the work you said your 8 had http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=112852

Cody Red 04-22-2007, 01:08 PM Still under warrenty? Glad to hear you're okay. Sorry you have to experience this.
-Cody
youngen 04-22-2007, 01:12 PM yes the engine they just put in is still under warrenty
rotten42 04-22-2007, 01:17 PM Not quite the first. Remember arosenkrans a few months back? Hers spontaneously combusted while parked. I believe they traced it to a fuel leak in the engine compartment.
Ken
I wonder if it was from an injector leak. I had one on my car. I kept telling the Mazda service people that whenever I was stopped at a light I could smell fuel. Once you got going it would disappear. They looked it over and ran some tests. They didn't believe me until I managed to get the service advisor to ride with me. He was then convinced. The took it back into the shop and after about 1/2 they found one of my injectors was leaking.
Ever Hernandez 04-22-2007, 01:28 PM  :crying: Glad you're okay, like some of the other guys I thought you had some fancy flame job, Flame derby, or fire coming out your exhaust, not your engine  . Maybe we outta start carrying mini fire extinguishers in our cars. Holy crap, still in shock..
youngen 04-22-2007, 01:30 PM uhh... i don't think a fire extinguisher would have put out the fire....lol
Michael 04-22-2007, 01:52 PM Just saw this on Houston-Imports. Glad to see you're alright.
As if the RX-8 didn't get "flamed" enough on that forum already...
A rotary is like an islamic extremist - chances are it'll end up blowing up in the end.
tajabaho1 04-22-2007, 01:53 PM holy crap man, glad your alright, holy crap, thats lemon to the max, shit dude, mazda will be paying you some shitload of money ftw, but still, serious, has this been going on for a while? any precursors?
Michael 04-22-2007, 01:56 PM My next mods will be a flame-suit and fire extinguisher.
Cody Red 04-22-2007, 02:00 PM My next mods will be a flame-suit and fire extinguisher.
To go along with our quart of oil and coolant! But seriously.
-Cody
youngen 04-22-2007, 02:05 PM problems with the car have been happening ever since the middle of 05. the Joe meyers dealership knows my entire family by first name basis... it blows and its rediculous
RX8rider 04-22-2007, 02:16 PM with all this talk about a fuel leak, I've noticed that under WOT, I can smell fuel from inside the car. This started since my 30k service about 1 month ago. I wasn't too concerned but now after this, i might have to take it in!
youngen 04-22-2007, 02:17 PM uhh... after this.. how about everybody take you car in and check for a fuel leak... i don't think anyone here especially those with fully modded cars would want to watch there car just go up in flames.... i know i dind't...
Damn, that sucks bro.. Hopefully you and your friend are okay. Same thing happened to a lady friend of mine, had a gas leak on her PT Cruiser. It also burst into flames, right as she pulled up in her driveway at home.
tajabaho1 04-22-2007, 03:38 PM man, I should go check out my car, maybe the smell of fuel in when I start up my engine isn't just random afterall @.@
DarkBrew 04-22-2007, 07:47 PM Sorry that happened to your car and glad you're okay.
fitz75 04-22-2007, 07:48 PM Thank god you're ok... this is quite an experience...
Stavesacre21 04-22-2007, 08:18 PM WTF! This is crazy! I'm glad to hear you 2 made it out alive!
early 30's crisis 04-22-2007, 08:22 PM This is insane... i was expecting some fat exhaust and a youtube link to go with...
I'm so sorry about your car... and so glad you guys got out in time..
dshiznit1489 04-22-2007, 08:38 PM so, parting anything out?
whats left of it atleast...
tajabaho1 04-22-2007, 08:44 PM I think the only things left are rear bumber?
TheKDog 04-22-2007, 08:50 PM Not a good job.
Easy_E1 04-22-2007, 08:51 PM Let the insurance investigators look it over and maybe they can find out what caused the major fuel leak. Only thing I can see that would cause that much fuel is a hole in the tank or the main fuel line came off. I would think it is related to the fuel line myself. This would explain your lose of power all of a sudden. No fuel. Well fuel was still pumping that was the cause of the fire gettting so big so fast.
Anyway just my view on the incident. Glad no one was hurt. It could have been a lot worse.
Again Glad you and your friend are alright.
tajabaho1 04-22-2007, 09:35 PM man, sue mazda, if its their fault, they should pay the price
CTrx8 04-22-2007, 09:45 PM so, parting anything out?
whats left of it atleast...
vultures. a moment to mourn at least?
glad to see you guys got out safely.
youngen 04-22-2007, 09:46 PM yah the bumper and the trunk... from jsut looking at it, but i'll be parting the Borla Exhaust if its not damaged. and maybe the tein springs if anything there will be 2 of the teins... thats all i know as of now, i will know more by tomarrow.
youngen 04-22-2007, 09:47 PM O and 2 ADR 18's with tires...
tajabaho1 04-22-2007, 09:53 PM must........resist...........urge........to....... ...ask.........for.......exhaust.......ARG!!!
youngen 04-22-2007, 09:59 PM as soon as i found out what is salvageable i'll let yall know cuz as of right now... everything is either burnt or water logged.
UFGator12 04-22-2007, 10:02 PM How old are you?
youngen 04-22-2007, 10:08 PM 20
LMCCAL05 04-22-2007, 10:55 PM Thank God U all got out of the vehicle, I believe this is an isolated incident for the 8. Still makes we want to visit the dealership!
Mazurfer 04-22-2007, 11:01 PM Damn, I too thought it would be a flaming exhaust, not the frickin car!
Glad you got out in time and all is okay. I always carry a fire exstinguisher and have for years. It obviously wouldn't have saved the car, but it could've helped if one of you two had been on fire. Jeez, that sucks! So, if you just had an engine put in, is it safe to assume you hadn't modded that one yet? Also, it seems if you did just have it replaced, they may have screwed up the install.
c41250n 04-22-2007, 11:57 PM omg....glad to hear that you guys are ok!
youngen 04-23-2007, 01:31 AM hell i am glad too.. yah i never desicded to modd the engine cuz of the fact that the engins is an officaly P.O.S. so i just waited.. good thing i did the worst is i jsut baught a mazda speed kit for it too the day before.
swoope 04-23-2007, 01:50 AM your fender vents are hot!!
fuel injector leak.. # 2.
sorry. i hope you get a new car from mazda.. keep us posted on how this plays out..
beers
knight7 04-23-2007, 02:44 AM Damn i can really use the black plastic piece under the back bumper.the right muffler one and the middle one.
otakurx 04-23-2007, 07:09 AM There should be a signed report as to the cause from the fire department. You can use that to go to mazda about a fuel leak. You may want a lawyer too, but if the car was still under warranty and yo didn't have any mods to the engine and the fire department ruled it as a fuel leak then I would say Mazda should replace it.
Elara 04-23-2007, 09:59 AM Holy crap! Glad you guys are both okay- keep us updated on the cause!
brillo 04-23-2007, 10:13 AM holy crap, I'm glad your ok. Makes me think even NA we should have a fire extinguisher just in case.
dgrx8 04-23-2007, 10:14 AM glad you guys made it out on time... forget about the car dude
CarAndDriver 04-23-2007, 01:00 PM Glad everyone got out safely. Keep us updated.
youngen 04-23-2007, 02:21 PM I am going to see what I can do about parts for you voltures(sp) out there... :spank: Like i said before the only things salvage able are probably 2 rims and 2 tires, the borla exhaust, and the system, i went and looked at the car today and the tein springs have melted into a pile of metal along with everything else in the front of the car basically everything from the back doors to the trunk is fine.. O and for the exhaust i don't know about it because i don't know how far the flames went under the car and since its a full catback system and all 4 doors are burnt and toasted....O another thing i say the mirrors burnt off.. ..but i will see what I can do... but i don't think im going to get another mazda....from the looks of it I am goin to have a car imported over here from japan. either nissan or toyota.. but i'll let yall know whats going on..
CTrx8 04-23-2007, 02:50 PM don't let this one lemon of a car ruin you on the 8 experience. from your posts i can understand your frustration but you had to have bought it for a reason in the first place.
BigOLundh 04-23-2007, 03:05 PM CRAZY - glad to hear you made it out alive.
-hS
youngen 04-23-2007, 03:27 PM O yes don't get me wrong the Car has got to be one of the sexiest looking pieces of metal i have ever seen lol... you don't even need to jack off... lol but the thing that blows my mind is how Mazda can say they "re-designed the rotary" and it be a p.o.s. if i ever did get another mazda i would prefer a 7.
MazdaMonkey 04-23-2007, 03:51 PM hell i am glad too.. yah i never desicded to modd the engine cuz of the fact that the engins is an officaly P.O.S. so i just waited.. good thing i did the worst is i jsut baught a mazda speed kit for it too the day before.
Wow, I hope you just make a lot of typos...
Pretty convenient for you that the car is totaled considering all of the problems you have been having.
Glad everyone got out alright.
CarAndDriver 04-23-2007, 04:57 PM You should probably look at other cars, perhaps a Honda/Acura.
youngen 04-23-2007, 06:45 PM o ok so yah the exhaust rims and springs are shot.. the only thing i saved was the rims... and somehow flames got into the ignistion and burnt the key and melted platic to it... i had to rip the key out of the ignition...
tajabaho1 04-23-2007, 07:22 PM ^ aww, sorry to hear that man, well, if you really want a safe car next time, I really recommend toyota, and I'm not kidding, they are really safe, but they kinda suck, but hey! get a prius, its total opposite of the rx-8 and will give you a different experience!
youngen 04-23-2007, 07:30 PM no. I WILL not drive that... lol
tajabaho1 04-23-2007, 07:44 PM you can let your half-blind step-cousin whose 15 year old drive it, and it'll still be safe!!!
what more can you ask?
the next best thing is an rx-8 ofcourse :)
newcastle 04-23-2007, 07:56 PM Brutal pics glad to hear both of ou made it out safe.
Jedi54 04-23-2007, 07:59 PM whoa, that's pretty crazy.
youngen 04-24-2007, 01:28 AM no more 8's for me i think ima go with an Evo 8 if i can afford it
knight7 04-24-2007, 01:45 AM no more 8's for me i think ima go with an Evo 8 if i can afford it
Just waited it out and get the Project X. why go 8 when you can go X for about the same price?
Gambit 04-24-2007, 10:03 AM no more 8's for me i think ima go with an Evo 8 if i can afford it
Can't blame ya after that experience
but why not an evo IX or MR
youngen 04-24-2007, 11:37 AM ... true true.. i am actually going to the dealership in a minute to see what the priceses would be for an evo 8, 9 and MR
youngen 04-24-2007, 04:16 PM ok well i would like to thank everyone for caring, and i will know how much money i will be recieving from this fiasco and i will keep yall informed. thanks everyone
Mazurfer 04-24-2007, 11:57 PM ok well i would like to thank everyone for caring, and i will know how much money i will be recieving from this fiasco and i will keep yall informed. thanks everyone
We would be curious about how they make it right with you!
Peace
BlueFrenzy 04-25-2007, 05:38 AM Wow .. that is insane! At first I thought your thread would be about flames from your exhaust or somehow a poke at how poorly the Calgary Flames did. Glad you are ok.
rx8frank 04-25-2007, 09:12 AM That's scares me I have right now an issue with the smell of gaz I started a thread about that. :Eyecrazy:
youngen 04-25-2007, 12:56 PM well if your smelling gass... and my car blew up cuz of a gass leak.. you prolly have gass leaking somewere so i think u should get that checked out.
tajabaho1 04-25-2007, 01:09 PM I smell gas too, but after the engine warms, the smell is gone, and nothing funky has happened yet
youngen 04-25-2007, 05:29 PM i wouldn't risk it...
MazdaMonkey 04-26-2007, 05:44 PM Which dealership have you been using?
youngen 04-26-2007, 09:22 PM you asked me this already... Joey Myers Mazda... Off 290 and Senate Ave.
donack456 04-27-2007, 01:13 AM Mazda Owes you big time! Thats Messed up!!! What year was that RX-8? I think its time to contact a Lawyer or see what they are offering a New RX-8 and Professional negligence and punitive damages $$$.
Damn thats messed up how did you get home? Keep all your reciepts. Kinda remind you of the Yugo and Pinto fire trouble. Except that I've never heard pf this happening before with RX-8s.
MazdaMonkey 04-27-2007, 11:01 AM Mazda Owes you big time! Thats Messed up!!! What year was that RX-8? I think its time to contact a Lawyer or see what they are offering a New RX-8 and Professional negligence and punitive damages $$$.

You mean Joe Myers Mazda owes him big time....
MazdaNAO had nothing to do with a tech not attaching a fuel line back up correctly (assuming that is really the cause of the fire)
a5alan2 04-27-2007, 11:24 AM I have no worries, I'm on empty :FIREdevil
youngen 05-01-2007, 12:07 AM lol thats what you think
CarAndDriver 05-01-2007, 12:50 AM You mean Joe Myers Mazda owes him big time....
MazdaNAO had nothing to do with a tech not attaching a fuel line back up correctly (assuming that is really the cause of the fire)
Yes, but MNAO is the parent organization so they have ultimate responsibility to see that this is taken care of.
Stavesacre21 05-01-2007, 04:41 AM a tech not attaching a fuel line back up correctly (assuming that is really the cause of the fire)
wow, i'd smell as serious lawsuit there...
fc13b-re 05-01-2007, 11:26 AM wow.....nice to hear your safe....wow, somehow im not surprised to see it happen to an rx...lol oh well I just hope it doesnt happen to me...real happy to hear everyone made it out alright
gonnahanvan8 05-01-2007, 11:43 AM I think this curse of the silvers is really getting out of hand. Glad to hear u are all okay.
MazdaMonkey 05-01-2007, 01:53 PM Yes, but MNAO is the parent organization so they have ultimate responsibility to see that this is taken care of.
Well he has made no effort to contact/complain to MNAO because they have no record of his problems and the local reps have no heard anything about it. Sounds like he is just working it out with Joe Myers
CarAndDriver 05-01-2007, 02:08 PM Well he has made no effort to contact/complain to MNAO because they have no record of his problems and the local reps have no heard anything about it. Sounds like he is just working it out with Joe Myers
I guess if it doesn't work out with JM, then MNAO is going to have to deal with the mess.
youngen 05-01-2007, 03:58 PM we have not conataced anyone yet becuase our insurance company is still trying to figure out the actual cause. the only thing we did was call Jm and let them know what happened and that they will be hearing from us.
qzeek 05-01-2007, 11:25 PM I was at JM today getting new Tail lights (condensation).
While I was waiting & watching them install the lights, I overheard a group of Employees talking about this.
They were talking about who worked on the 2 or so engines that were put in. That's kinda wiered to overhear a conversation today at the service department and then find out on the forum, somthing as bad as what transpired here.
chrstn8 05-01-2007, 11:53 PM This whole topic really scares me.
My Rx8, does the same thing all the time that urs did before it blew up.
When i start to go up and hill i hear a horrible noise, and loose all power, and just like u said when i downshift and try to get some, it doesnt have any to give.
I think I should be worried???? anymore things that it was doing prior to this?? i have taken mine to Mazda several times and they never seem to find anything wrong with it, because it never does it when i get it over to them.. haha...

PhotoMunkey 05-03-2007, 01:47 AM The kid in Chicago who wrecked into a pole had the car catch fire and burn him and his passenger to death. If you smell gas, then the car is LEAKING FUEL. Period. Do not accept it back from a dealership until there is NO FUEL SMELL coming from the car. Make them find it. At the very least, fuel is an unburned hydrocarbon, hence it's an emissions problem, and covered until 70,000 miles here in the US.

Huskyfan23 05-04-2007, 08:30 AM How much do you still owe on your car? It is a lot more than $17k?
One of those reasons it's smart to get gap coverage....
tjbourgoyne 05-04-2007, 09:26 AM Sorry dude. If you can sell any parts I need a bumper. I'd come pick it up.
youngen 05-04-2007, 04:51 PM car is already payed off...gap coverage???
no sorry the only thing salvageable was the system in the trunk everything else= destroyed. : (
Huskyfan23 05-04-2007, 04:58 PM car is already payed off...gap coverage???
no sorry the only thing salvageable was the system in the trunk everything else= destroyed. : (
Didn't know the car was already paid off. Smart move by you.
Some people decide to finance a car and don't get gap coverage, meaning they have to pay the difference between the amount insurance will pay and the amount they owe.
youngen 05-04-2007, 05:38 PM oo ok i get it now
youngen 05-07-2007, 01:25 PM well our insurance company gave is jsut under 18 thousand and thats including the parts i lost in the fire... : ( well i'll keep yall informed on the the rest.
CarAndDriver 05-07-2007, 01:33 PM How much did you owe on the car? The car cost when you bought it?

8is>enuff 05-09-2007, 11:31 AM Before you go, would you mind cutting the exhaust tips off your 8 and mailing them to me? That would be swell. I'll give you $50.
CarAndDriver 05-09-2007, 12:39 PM Hasta.

Sorry, thought you could use a little levity. Just glad you're OK. Cars are just stuff at the end of the day. Stuff doesn't matter. Stuff is fun. Stuff can make us happy, but stuff doesn't matter.

And therein lies the reason I don't spend dollar 1 on mods ...
416to212 05-10-2007, 09:57 AM Youngen.... Including the fire and all what was your MPG? ;)
Oh and since you basically saved Rachelle's life, in my culture you basically own and have rights to her body. She should provide all the physical gratification you desire...
$17,000 and a personal concubine? Hey that's not bad!
neit_jnf 05-12-2007, 06:58 PM what's the dealer's word? they should give you a new car!!
youngen 10-15-2007, 09:57 PM we ended up taking a $15,000 check from insurance and i got a 2004 RSX type S dumped it on Tein HA's, 17 5zigen FNo1rc's wrapped in sumituma (sp) tires, type r fogs, type r lipkit, type r wing, type r shift boot, mugen shift knob.= with more to come. we took the check and left it at that.

lone_wolf025 10-16-2007, 10:38 PM That wing is a little big for my personal tastes, but its your car, not mine.
Matt RX8 10-16-2007, 10:38 PM sorry to hear about your car.
Enjoy the RSX-S, it's a fun car to drive. It looks great as well, especially with a few mods. I seriously considered purchasing one a few years ago and went on many test drives.

alz0rz 10-16-2007, 11:17 PM Crazy stuff.
Seems like you went the conservative way on this. Should have pushed for more out of Mazda and yer dealer. Why did you let your insurance take over all of it? Push for new 8 and sell it. :/
kersh4w 10-16-2007, 11:36 PM its too bad you let the one odd ball rx8 (only 2 reported cases of this?) discolor your image of rx8s.
i've never had a problem with mine and i drive it like i stole it.
BlueRenesis82 10-17-2007, 11:51 AM prick.
He does have a point tho
youngen 10-17-2007, 06:43 PM in person its not that big. n with the type r lip kit everything is in propotion... lemme get the pics take with it... i loved the 8 when i had it and it wasn't in the shop.. like i said before i will get another mazda but it will be a 7 this time.

OfficeNinja 10-18-2007, 12:37 PM And this is why you DON'T put your extra oil under the hood. See what happens?
I'm completely kidding. Glad everyone is ok.
tajabaho1 10-18-2007, 01:10 PM ^ tell that to renesis SE3P, he keeps extra oil in his hood, I have no comment

VASasha 10-19-2007, 02:32 PM if it was mods that caused the fire, we would have alot more toasty 8's
ivory8 10-19-2007, 06:47 PM glad u got a new car! the rsx certainly seems like it would be a fun car to drive. post up some pics of it with the new lip on it..id like to see it
solito77 12-12-2007, 09:29 PM Get yourself a lawyer and buy out Mazda.
Mike06 12-12-2007, 10:09 PM WTF
dude wtf are you doing?!?!? :Eyecrazy:
SUE MAZDA'S JAPANESE ASS!
you only got 15k out of this whole fiasco??!? ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU ALMOST DIED SON!
not to mention your little friend too..
if i was you i'd press charges and sue...charge them with every conceivable charge you can find in the book, and GET AS MUCH MONEY AS YOU CAN!!!!
jesus christ...are you stupid or what?!?!?!
i don't think you realize that you can get so much bank from this scenario...you don't have to settle for a RSX which is a car that looks like it was designed after a burger king toy model.
jesus christ wow...people can be dumb....:icon_no2: :icon_no2: :icon_no2:
StewC625 12-12-2007, 10:21 PM That shit is bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S
Wow, car-b-que of the highest order. Glad you're OK and glad you have insurance.
To the tool that said "wow, Mazda is going to owe you a lot of money" ... umm no, that's what insurance is for.
DOMINION 12-12-2007, 11:55 PM OMG! man thats just wrong! Good thing you guys are ok. I think I'm going to Auto Zone to get a fire extinguisher to keep in the trunk.
The curse of the silver strikes!

Ah yes, the new American dream.
Mike06 12-13-2007, 11:11 AM Ah yes, the new American dream.
well if my car got wtf-pwned to the degree where it BLOWS UP :Eyecrazy: , theres no way in hell that i'd be settling for a replacement car that isnt even worth as much as the 8 (an RSX....ROFL!!!!!) and theres no way in hell that i'd be fine with no reimbursements :icon_no2:...
i'd take it far beyond just sueing the dealership, id go for the mazda corporation. this whole situation is crazy, if your life was in danger and you had a near death experience, i'd EXPECT to get the kind of money from this lawsuit to EASILY afford a brand new Z06. :anger:
SideOfBacon 12-13-2007, 11:25 AM Ah yes, the new American dream.
you arent american without a few pending lawsuits and extreme levels of debt.... duhhhh :uhh:
youngen 12-19-2007, 04:16 PM how can i sue mazda if the insurace can't find out what caused it??? nobody can... its burn to a crisp basically the entire engine melted togeather.... if i could sue i would and since i was living with my parents and they paid the insurace my dad is to laid back to deal with all that shit... he's retired i could care less if i got money from them, more important things in life than money. and plus the RSX i have now, will be completely done by mid next year or end of nxt year. i will be able to run 12's in the quarter...
