I wonder if it was from an injector leak. I had one on my car. I kept telling the Mazda service people that whenever I was stopped at a light I could smell fuel. Once you got going it would disappear. They looked it over and ran some tests. They didn't believe me until I managed to get the service advisor to ride with me. He was then convinced. The took it back into the shop and after about 1/2 they found one of my injectors was leaking.

Glad you're okay, like some of the other guys I thought you had some fancy flame job, Flame derby, or fire coming out your exhaust, not your engine . Maybe we outta start carrying mini fire extinguishers in our cars. Holy crap, still in shock..

Just saw this on Houston-Imports. Glad to see you're alright.

As if the RX-8 didn't get "flamed" enough on that forum already...

A rotary is like an islamic extremist - chances are it'll end up blowing up in the end.

with all this talk about a fuel leak, I've noticed that under WOT, I can smell fuel from inside the car. This started since my 30k service about 1 month ago. I wasn't too concerned but now after this, i might have to take it in!

Damn, that sucks bro.. Hopefully you and your friend are okay. Same thing happened to a lady friend of mine, had a gas leak on her PT Cruiser. It also burst into flames, right as she pulled up in her driveway at home.

Let the insurance investigators look it over and maybe they can find out what caused the major fuel leak. Only thing I can see that would cause that much fuel is a hole in the tank or the main fuel line came off. I would think it is related to the fuel line myself. This would explain your lose of power all of a sudden. No fuel. Well fuel was still pumping that was the cause of the fire gettting so big so fast.
Anyway just my view on the incident. Glad no one was hurt. It could have been a lot worse.
Again Glad you and your friend are alright.
