San Bernardino monthly Mazda meet and drive.
being a noob is not the problem. over confidence in one's
driving skills is a problem. i've had my 8 for almost six years
and i know my limitations very well. but i drive slower then
almost every one. ok ok ok, i drive the slowest of all.

Loren: sorry to hear about the ticket, that really sucks. You'll probably have to get the tint removed and then re-applied.
Keith: what motor did you guys take out and put in? same year, different year?
purpose for swap?

I think they swapped in a later model NC Miata engine with some sort of variable valve technology that originally they couldn't run because their standalone they had at the time wouldn't support it.

Next event is the last Sunday in May...so we still have some time to do the tuning portion.
We pulled the '99 engine out, and replaced it with the '01 engine because it has a VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system in it. Horse power gain is only slight. Prior to doing the swap and purchasing the engine, I had thought we would be gaining something like 30 hp...it is actually more like 10 hp...but with the VVT, we should be pulling stronger power and much more torque...which is very helpful with the type of 2nd and 3rd gear driving we do around the autocross courses.
We haven't been able to do this swap before, as you had to have a good engine management system....but now that the car has the AEM unit, we were freed up to make the jump to the '01.
The '99 is the most popular engine swap, as there are parts to allow you to make the conversion and retain stock wiring......so it was an easy engine to sell. Casey actually sold the engine for the same price he originally paid for it....and we found an incredible deal on the "01...and even after having it shipped from Canada, walked away with money in the pocket.
Scotty is going to help in setting the tune for the new engine, and in finding some dyno time to dial in some of the specifics.

yup. WHat Keith said.
the 01 engine is expected to provide 10-15 more h.p. but the main gain is in the bottom end. with the VVT it will come on harder. this will be nice for a tight track.
did a little porting. nothing crazy. assuming I didnt make things worse, this should be a small gain. maybe a couple h.p.
we are also switching to E-85. on a normal everyday engine this is expected to gain 5%. not a lot, but thats about 8 h.p. for us.
all that combined maybe we will jump from the 130 h.p. on the 99 engine to ~150. (crazy that its still so low huh?)
did I mention the car weighs 1951 pounds? :-) (there I feel better about my horse power)

yeah, Erica found the deal, so thought it would be good to post here for those of you who do have blu rays, or that video game system that plays blu rays

I'm not planning on making a switch to Blu ray...all those little disney movies we bought for Brady are in DVD format.

Jason!
When you gonna come hang out with us? It's been forever.
ha ha. yeah. but considering how much is done to the car, 150 does not seem like a lot.
the good part is Super miata has torque compared to the rotary's.
when we ran the RX-8 it was a high reving beast. un-happy out of a turn.
the miata is the other way. the tighter the track, the better we do.
