oh, and Idyllwild is safe. it's the Hemet side of the mountain that's on fire. They're trying to contain the fire before it gets to Idyllwild.

red, ugh. red is so overdone.

Michael, if you paint them, i'd say you paint them a matching blue

RX-8 Issue?

OK so this is what happened to me today. i am driving on the free way (the 10) goign up the pass to Yucaipa. The car seemed like it was having a hard time going up the grade even with just me and a full tank of gas. i didnt think much of it till i started away from a stop light on the blvd. It felt liek i was starting in second gear from a stop. The car felt like it had half the horse power and it did this for gears 1-4. And then i noticed there was a knocked sound mat around 4k rpm.

-I thought it was bad gas since i just filled up half way to yucaipa
-maybe it was bad gas form the bottom of the tank since i filled up with 14.5 gallons
-Maybe it was a loose spark plug
-just maybe it was the start of a blown engine

So i called mazda road side assistance to get a tow to the nearest dealership (redlands). i ended up waiting over 2 hours since the company was so busy and when i finally got to the dealership it was bare / empty. With the locaiton being redlanfs i figured i would limp back to Ontario (romero) but when i started driving the knocking wasnt there, the power was back to normal and everything seemed fine. i nursed it anyway doing 61 on the freeway (no AC) all the way back home. the car seems fine but maybe there is still something wrong. any suggestions? maybe before tomorrow morning?

-The car is also due for spark plugs which i have been procrastinating with (change at 45k car is at 52K, also just out of regular warenty i think). Engine has 100k obviously.

loren your coils just went out.
everything you just said is what
happened to me.. here's the fix.
buy a new set of coils, and put them
in very simple. or you could get the bhr coils
and put them in very simple.
the problem with oem coils is that they are NOT good
with heat.. they will go out again...
the bhr coils are pricey, but they are worth
every penny.. i burnt out a set of oem coils
in six months. brand new.. as long as the temp.
did not get in the 90's i was good. but once it
got over that and i went somewhere i would lose power.
and the knocking. very scary, you think your engine
is about to go..

it's not major depending on how you look at it..
a set of coils and you'll be as good as new..
just for the record. i drove for two hrs in temps.
over 100 today and i could still pull in 6th gear..

so if that is the problem can i still drive it till the bhr order comes in? (how much is it for coils and plugs?

Yes it knocked, tomorrow morning i will give it more revs to see if it still knocks, i guess i should also properely warm it up too.

yep it's drivable.. if you drive fast in the heat the coils will get hot. try to drive with ac off.
as that will help some.. but i drove from vegas like that..
when it first happened i was in san berdo, going to a wedding.
it was 97 that day. and then it happend again on my way to
monrongo casino. it was 100 that day. no power at high gears.
when it coold down i was good to go again.

Never fear, Jedi is here!!

Loren: I completely agree with Michael on this one. Those are the typical symptoms of bad coils.
Once your coils start to go, the car really struggles in the heat and it seems like it has no hp.

The BHR coils are not cheap, but as Michael said...they are worth EVERY penny.
I myself went through 3 sets of OEM coils.

BHR is having a sale at SevenStock. You could save a few bucks that way.

the coils are 485 i think.. if your going to sevenstock
you can pre order at a cheaper price and you can get
them when they come to seven stock i think..
depends on how fast they can make them..
might want to check with ray tho.

you do live in an area thats prone to heat up.. taking the engine
cover off will help some also, the heat won't hover above the engine.
it should flow a little better.

i think your only saving the shipping on the coils.
but do it once and you won't have to worry about
it again. get the oem's and you may be looking at
replacing them again in a year, or two..

like anything man made. some things will go far
beyond there design. while other's of the same
design won't.. i think the planets have to be lined
up just right for things to last longer then intended

Again, curious, but shouldn't I have recieved some sort of warning light / indicator that there is something wrong? I drove this morning and everything seemed fine even reved up to 5500 but i am still afraid to really get into the rpms. Maybe after work i will redline it.

I found the link https://www.rx8club.com/vendor-classifieds-155/bhrs-ssxii-sale-181023/

Loren: there's no CEL or warning light that will come on when your coils are dead.
If you start misfiring really bad, you will notice the CEL blinking.

tough to say if they're still working.
they won't all go out at once meaning you might have one of them that is not operating within range which is why you're not feeling the same amount of power.

"Worth every penny"
What is the price differnece between OEM and BHR (BHR is $440 +72 for plugs). I havent found a website that has the OEM stuff yet, unless it was incredable cheap $30 (finishlineperformance)?
